Indeed it does sound a lot like very, very old Martian. Piecing things together bit by bit, it sounds like this ship was trying to deliver the princess to some sort of other city when it was attacked. Apparently she's some sort of last hope or other.
And the bugs are just an added worry - they apparently don't like any of the humans at all.
