Moving On.
His apartment was impeccably neat again. No laundry on the floor. No constant risk of damage to the dollhouse. No piglet accidentally knocked places. No having to constantly check for the smell of alcohol.

GK was single again. And he knew it was better this way, that GK hadn't been able to help him and he was better off going home, but that didn't make it easier.

...the sound the flat of his blade made as it hit an assailant while he got the other with the stick-sheath made it just a little easier.

It was weird for GK to instigate the fight, but Zoe shrugged and dived in with both feet. He'd talk when he wanted her to listen.

In the meantime, the bad guys weren't being really bad, so shooting them wasn't the immediate option. She held palm-sized rocks in her fists while she swung and kicked, waiting for that moment when one got too close and she could flick a wrist and have the satisfaction of two round eyes staring down a cocked barrel.

And one will do just that, and end up staring just so, and try to scurry backwards, but get coldcocked in the back of the head and fall down. Other times, he might've let a guy like this run, but tonight GK didn't feel like taking chances.

"So," he said to Zoe, collecting weapons and dusting off and sheathing his own, "Where's the best place around here to donate a bunch of clothes, men's size large?"

"Church thrift store, two blocks over," Zoe said promptly. "Are you sure you want to donate? Those clothes aren't anywhere near fashionable."

"This stuff? Ew. No. I don't know where it's been. But the stuff I'd gotten Eli is clean and warm and could do somebody some good. He's... gone home, I think. Which is good. Better for him. All that." He looked at his feet as he finished filling his weapons bag. "I'll drop the clothes off at the church store later. Thanks."

"Night before last. It's over; it's better this way; nothing to be done about it now." He's trying to be efficiently calm about it, but his throat catches a little.

She stared a few moments longer, unable to fathom why anybody would leave GK. He was practically perfect. There was that fussy thing he did when your (her) hair wasn't conditioned enough, but it wasn't enough to make anybody leave him.

Mouth opened to start blasting Eli, she abruptly swallowed her words. It hurt. A lot.

"C'mon." She nudged his arm with her elbow as she passed him. "We'll get some coffee and cinnamon rolls at the diner."

He nods with a slight affirming sound, not trusting his voice, and follows. Coffee and cinnamon rolls was a good plan. Yes.

At the diner, Zoe matter-of-factly pushed GK's weapon bag under the table before she sat down in the booth. Just like she did it every day. The shift manager turned a blind eye. Zoe had been a good customer over the years. Handy one, too, during a robbery in which a salt shaker saved the day.

She pushed the menu away and fixed a look on GK. "You okay?"

He'd cleaned off all makeup earlier, not just to go eating, but in case of tears. His stuff was waterproof, but sometimes, one never knew.

"...I'm going to be. Still more luck with guys than my family has had in close to a hundred years, so there's that."

"Jed better not have luck with guys while he's dating my mom."

And Zoe manages to elicit the prissy countertenor giggle, albeit softly. "No, Uncle Jed bypasses the whole bad luck with guys issue by dating a particular awesome lady instead. Very smart."

Zoe nodded and smiled a bit. She wasn't a comforter, but she'd try for GK's sake.

"The Triangle doesn't help the luck any. I never had any luck here."

"The smart ones don't want me, and the gangs want to put my ass to work on the street," she said with her usual frankness. "My best friend is a guy who has the same bad luck I do with guys. What's that say about us?"

"How many of the smart ones have you actually met? The gangs well, it's a funny coincidence of opinion, since we have such strong views on what should happen to their asses as well." GK's mood is clearing up a little. He orders a vast amount of cinnamon rolls.

"You're a smart guy, but you aren't from around here and you're competition if we ever find one in the Triangle." She doubled the order and added coffee.

"So I never met a smart guy in the Triangle that wasn't using his smarts for profit in drugs or other things. Pretty sure a good smart guy doesn't exist. Like Santa Claus."

"Well, that we can do." She raised her cup to toast him. "We're good at that. It helps when they keep begging for it. So now we're looking for smart guys who appreciates our delicate way of retrophrenologically handling difficult situations. Still don't think we're gonna find them in the Triangle. We're gonna be old cousins together."
