Part of the job
Sweet old ladies didn't deserve to worry about their bank accounts because of scams. She thought she had the people tracked down and had noted that there were several other people in Mrs Olson's age bracket on the block that were facing similar problems. It was actually a very nice looking area if a little run down for Star City but still a decent area with an older crowd of people living here. She didn't notice too many people in their early years. It was a good thing to take stock of at least.

Well this turned from a way for the PI to pay the rent into something she felt she had to take care of to the best of her ability. So she put on a fresh jacket and combed her hair back neatly back and started talking to people. Older people often had trouble seeing things clearly so getting a good base of description helped. It put a smile on her face that one nosy old man had more than that.

Her eyes raked the flier for the so-called fund raiser. Gee, where had she seen this before? The cynic in her pounded at this pretty harshly. Time to go have a chat with Mrs O. She wanted to be sure the woman had put a halt on her account like she had suggested earlier yesterday.

So she approached the woman's home since she would be passing by anyways and noted oddly that the front door was cracked open. Frowning Jane pulled out a handkerchief and pushed the door open.

Her eyes went wide and she pulled out her cell phone right away. Shit. Maybe this wasn't a simple scam. She swore and stayed right outside as she called the cops. Being wrong about something was the worse part of being a PI. Looking in at the old woman as she talked to a dispatcher Jane decided that if anything she'd finish this investigation because little old ladies do not get killed and forgotten about.

So she clenches her jaw and waits.

The yellow "do not enter" tape is still around the house when Red Arrow arrives on the scene, a couple of hours after the police have cleared the area. Quietly, she slips in through an open window in the back of the house (because that was just like the cops, thinking that no one would enter and ransack the place just because of some yellow tape), and makes her way into the living room.

Red Arrow isn't the only person here. There's a woman in a blue shirt with a pony tail high up on her head with a flash light in her mouth going through some papers with white surgical gloves on her hand. She doesn't see Mia at first but looks up in a decorative mirror hanging above the fire place and the flash light just falls from her mouth.

Shoot.

Mia pauses, knocking an arrow in her bow at hearing the drop of the flashlight.

"Looks like I'm not the only one that doesn't see the point of the yellow tape," she says, entering the room.

"Look, I ain't here to start trouble. Mrs Olson came to my office yesterday to hire me to look into something for her. I came here earlier today to give her an update since I was in the area and found her stone cold," Jane defends herself with a firmly set jaw.

"I don't like people killing little old ladies so I decided to see what I could find," she had found something too clutched in one hand is a piece of mail that got in a few days ago if the post mark is anything to go by. The last thing Jane needed is a cape on her case over this case.

"There's been a couple of 'old lady killings'," she says, lowering her bow and easing up on the grip, "I've been checking it out. This is the third one this month. I've been trying to piece all of them together, but the killers aren't so great at leaving a paper trail."

Hey, she's no Batman.

Jane blinks several times. Wow that has her scowl. "Three and the cops don't have it pinned down yet? You either? Gee, color me surprised."

She bites her lower lip in thought. "I think I have a lead. Have all three victims had problems with the bank? Unauthorized with-drawls a couple of days before they got done?"

Mia narrows her eyes, "At least I'm still on the job. You think the cops are? They could care less about some psychopath knocking off little old ladies."

Mia nods, "Yup. Notices from the bank on each of their coffee tables, not even a day old."

She won't defend the cops. The fact whoever is doing this hasn't been caught irks her.

"Not one. They're working with partners. Tall man, older with some pudge on him and a chick. That's what I got so far. I think I can track them down based on what people have seen," Jane explains while checking out the letter in her hand. She unfolds it and looks it over before picking up the flash light and going over it again. She sees something but she's not sure what but it came from whoever had been doing this.

She's tempted to take it with her and run back to her office to look at an old case. It might help.

Mia nods, "Got it." she resists the urge to throw in a sarcastic barb, "Anything else? Build? Hair color? Anything that could narrow it down?"

She notices the letter.

"That another bank notice?"

"Well one guy noticed he had a tattoo on the back of his neck. A pair of nice on snake eyes. Thin blond hair, on the fat side. The chick was skinny with well tanned skin, dark curly hair and dressed well," Jane rattles off what she recalls she has the rest written down but that's a pretty good run down.

"No. A letter from their 'charity' asking for information for their records," Jane taps the letter. "I think I know who printed this out for them. The kin of print they used is the mass produced kind, ya know? I just need to show this around and I can probably get names, maybe a billing address."

She knows she can catch these guys. But she thinks in the back of her head that back up would be wonderful and this Arrow might give it if asked nicely. Jane isn't good at nice which is a shame.

Mia nods, taking in everything that Jane's telling her. "Got it." The guy actually sounded like someone that she'd seen around at the Gazette...of course, she couldn't exactly tell Jane that though with blowing her cover.

"Ask around, get names, anything that works."

She may have to dig around the paper when she's done...

Jane replaces the piece of mail where she found it and picked up her flash light. She's not the type to believe in cover for herself but for other people that's just fine.

She takes a step back from the coffee table and is about to back track through the back door when something catches her eye. She moves over and kneels next to a potted pant and peers under the stand clicking on her flash light. "Hello what's this?"

She reaches carefully and pulls out an earring. She looks it over then pulls out a small bag and drops it in making a tsking sound. "People just don't know how to clean up after themselves. Catch, hero. It belongs to the chick. Mrs Olson couldn't wear jewelry, she was allergic to silver and gold."

Red Arrow catches the earring in between her pointer finger and her thumb. Holding it up to her eyes, she looks over it closely, examining it.

"Real diamonds," she says, "Fourteen-carat gold. Definitely not a cheap Wal-Mart knockoff." Good thing they're both wearing gloves, "We should search it for fingerprints. We get a match on the chick, we find our guy."

"I have a kit somewhere," she pats her coat own. Gun, duct tape, extra clip, a knife and more gloves. Just where is her kit damn it?

She scowls then smiles as she locates it and unrolls it onto a cleared up space on the counter.

"Got your kit right here. Not a standard police forensics one either," she admits. The power is darker than the standard grade but that's a bonus since is makes the lines more clear. "I do a lot of real detective work. We can get sets here and go get 'em."

Her shark-like grin lights up the room. She's thinking unpleasant thoughts about the killers obviously but seems willing to be a team player on this.

While Mia herself hasn't always been the best team player, she's willing to shove any paranoia that she has aside of working with someone that she's just met.

"Perfect," she says, a wide grin on her face, tossing the ring back at Jane, "Heads up, Batman."

Red Arrow, does a quick walk-around of the room, checking for anything that might be out of the ordinary. Broken glass. With...is that a drop of blood on it.

"You may not have the forensics connections, but I do." Mia pulls out a small pair of tweezers and a test tube, and eases the blood into it, popping the cap on.

Later, she'll be taking advantage of her connections at Star City General.

"Lucky," Jane replies with a teasing grin. She catches the earring with ease and begins to set to work dusting.

"But nothing beats following your gut and keen observation," Jane replies. She is done pulling the prints shortly and gets another copy for her own records.

"We have at least two full prints to work with. I'm going to guess you have some way to check these?"

"The old-fashioned way to get things good and done, I say." Mia's followed a lot of leads based on gut choices. While it's gotten her in some tight spots in the past, following you gt always seems to pay off in the end.

She nods, "You bet your ass I do."

Then these two are a lot alike except for the fact Jane uses a gun and Mia doesn't.

"Good," Jane says and puts the card with the prints on them where Mia can pick it up as she cleans up her kit and puts it away.

"Looks like we have our work cut out for us though," Jane admits. But that does not seem to bother her at all she has a smirk tugging at her face.

"Here's to you Mrs Olson. We won't fail you," Jane says in a soft tone. She won't give up.

Mia takes the card and slips it into a pocket on the side of her quiver. "We're both big girls with brains and college degrees, I'm sure we can figure it out."

She tosses Jane a comm-link. "When I find out anything, I'll contact you."

She gets a shiny new comm! That means she's apart of the team, right? Okay so she really isn't but she nods with a curious look at the comm-link before putting it in a pocket.

"Of course. And so you don't have to go 'Hey you' it's Jane Doe-Smith. Whatever you want to call me is fine."

And she knows her name sounds weird. It's a variation off of a name given to unidentified women but no one really asks about it.

Now time for some leg work.

This was the fun part of being a detective. Wait scratch that. Jane loved everything to do with her job. She took a long swig of her coffee and swore some day she would buy stocks in it since she lived off of it in the wee hours of the morning.

She had just finished tracking down an address for one Franklin de La Verde. What a funny name but who was she to throw stones? She wanted to get a good look at him to match him to what he should look like so she waited and cruised the area on foot looking like a bright eyed professional.

She promised herself a nap latter then did a mental cheer when she spotted him. She kept her distance and zeroed in on the back of his neck. Bingo. God that tattoo is tackier than his shoes. But look at that lady he's with. Too pretty and too glamorous looking for a guy like him. Judging by how he followed her he could guess who was the boss. As a PI Jane had gotten used to women who were used to being treated like that. But Jane had them in her sights now to figure out the chick's name and to come up with a plan.

Jane abandons her coffee in a trash can and heads to her car picking up something to eat along the way. Music and a long session bouncing tennis balls at her ceiling in the office should produce results.

On the other side of the comm-link, Red Arrow is smirking.

"I do. One Ana deMonetti...or better known as Irena Flores. About thirty-six years old. Got into a little trouble with the FBI a few years back. Involved in the Gotham City mob scene. Whole family went down...Ana with it. Gave a couple of names, paid the right people some money, went underground. Came back with a new name, new face, the whole package. Relocated to Star City, where she's now in a CEO at Star City National Bank...and running a little bit of under-the-table schemes, it would seem."

Batman, she's not, but Mia wants too? She can be a pretty damn good detective.

"That makes sense. I thought she died or something. Had a case a year or two ago when there was that vacuum of power in Gotham's under world. Word is someone is getting it together," Jane says with a nods. She won't talk about what she had been hired to do, right now was important.

"Our guy Franklin was low down in the ranks. Smart but not a leader. He came here around the same time as our dear Miss Flores if I'm right. I don't think he came up with this on his own. Let me guess, the victims had accounts at Star National?"

Jane sat back in her car seat while thinking. "I bet she knew when they came in to complain too."
