Who do you trust?
Months after her mother's murder Marissa decided to start going through the paper box labeled "confidential' that she'd taken out of Vicki's bedroom.  Vicki had grown distrustful in the months prior to her end, having taken to storing only the absolute barest of information on her work computer while storing the real information elsewhere.  The editor hadn't been able to find anything further, nor had any of the police when they looked over her computer.  No one had considered the box; Marissa herself had forgotten about it, chalking it up to just a haphazard collection of photo albums, old notebooks, a piece of jewelry or two.  Yet something made her open it.

Hours later she was on her way to Star City, having bothered only to mention to Bruce that she would be "out" for awhile and to not wait up.  The old man was creepy enough that he probably would figure out where she went before she even got there anyway.  It was the specific destination in Star City that would be harder for anyone to trace.  Bruce Wayne may have been the World's Greatest Detective, but Vicki Vale had been pretty clever in her own right; their daughter had inherited the best of both.  A little bit of digging, a few idle threats, a little bit of money changing hands and soon enough Marissa had exactly what she needed.

221 Arbor View Road.

She rang the bell.

Tim Drake is taking down the rest of Giselle's photos from his wall, trying to convince himself that this is what she would have wanted. It is still his fault that she's dead, but Mia's words had the ring of truth to them; spending the rest of his life sitting at her grave made for two dead people instead of just one.

He'd arranged for her body to be sent home to her father, rather than be buried here in a America, near him. He would learn to deal.

The ringing of his doorbell is a surprise as he isn't expecting anyone and Mia was one of the few people who knew to walk in. Dick would have come in through a window and Bruce...well, he did not expect Bruce to come and visit. He hoped this wasn't another reporter.

Tim goes to the door and opens it, finding himself face to face with a girl he knows only by reputation through the tabloids, and that reputation isn't a wholesome one.

"Miss Wayne, can I help you with something?" he asks.

"Tim Drake." Technically her brother. "Can I please come in? I need to talk to you. It's about my mother."

For all her less-than-savory reputation, the girl standing there in front of him was quiet and well-behaved, her expression almost solemn instead of the more rambunctious visages seen in the tabloids.

"You caught me on my way out, but...all right." he says, opening the door and allowing her inside. Tim doesn't know who her mother is, and is furiously trying to process who she reminds him of that might know him.

The first thing she'll notices is that there are boxes everywhere. It's hard to tell if he just moved in or is moving out soon.

"Who is your mother, and what do I have to do with her?" he asks.

"I'm sorry I caught you on your way out. I'll try to be brief." Politely she takes off her shoes. It was something Vicki always made her do when entering anyone's home.

"My mother is..." She paused, swallowing. "Was Vicki Vale. You were a kid when she and my father were a couple." Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out the note she'd found in her mother's things and handed it to him.

"She said you were the only one I could trust."

Tim blinks as Marissa admits who her mother is. He remembers Vicki well, especially from a few of the times he or Bruce had stepped in to save her when she got in over her head...which was often.

"Miss Wayne, my deepest condolences on your loss. Vicki was nice to me, and we talked about some things. She was one of the few journalists I liked." he says with a sad smile. Even as he smiles his mind is working step by step, wondering how much Vicki told her about Bruce, and by extension, the rest of them.

"I'm sorry, can I get you something to eat or drink? I don't get guests very often, so I'm not up on my courtesies." he says.

"Water would be nice, thank you. And please, call me Marissa. I suppose you are my...brother in a sense." She shook her head. "I am still trying to wrap my head around that. A father. Two brothers, neither of them on speaking terms with said father it would seem. Not to mention the rest of the complications that seem to come with our...family."

She watched Tim's face for a moment before speaking, her voice low and measured.

"I have taken up a certain mantle with the goal of bringing they who murdered my mother to justice, but I cannot ask the current Batman, or my father, for help. My mother trusted you."

"My relationship, or lack thereof, with Bruce is difficult to talk about. Mistakes were made on both sides, though you'll never hear him admit that." Tim says.

His eyes raise at the news of a new Batman.

"Wait...Bruce isn't Batman anymore?" he asks. That's news to Tim. He hasn't been keeping up on Gotham out of the possible temptation to go back. Tim finds himself in a place he doesn't want to be: playing a guessing game. If there was a new Batman, it would have to be someone Bruce trusts implicitly to carry on, and Tim knew it wasn't Dick.

So who?

"I think Bruce would help you if you went to him. You're his daughter, Marissa. I'm not really interested in getting into it with him over this...but he did a lot for me and I never repaid that debt. I never can.

If you're willing to take some direction and learn, maybe we can help each other out." Tim offers.

"Bruce doesn't care for me, Tim. He is suspicious of me and uncomfortable in my presence, but he seems to have no issue making my life difficult when it comes to my love life. I also suspect he is still angered over the fact that my mother hid me from him so...no, I cannot go to Bruce on this.

I really need your help, Tim. Whatever you ask of me, I'll do in exchange for your help. I watched my mother die and the bastard hasn't been brought to justice yet. This cannot stand and short of letting me change my uniform into something more appropriate I don't get do much more than tag along on patrol."

Marissa chewed at her lower lip.

"I'm not one to take direction well, but I'll do my best. But how could I be of help to you?"

"When I know the answer to that, Marissa, I'll tell you. In the meantime...I'm not going to solve the case for you. I'm going to give you every tool I've been given to help you succeed. I'll show you everything your father ever taught me about being a detective and a martial artist.

If you agree to this, you need to know that I'm not going to take it easy on you, and I'm going to demand everything you have to give. You need to decide if you can pay that price, because the answer is the difference between life and death." he says.

"You make it through training with me and you'll have every tool you need to find your mother's murderer and bring that person or persons to justice." he says, extending a hand.

"Are you in or are you out?" he asks.

Vicki had written in her diary that if there was one thing she regretted in her hiding Marissa away it was denying her a big brother in Tim. Marissa could see that in him as he made his offer. Training, real training and the opportunity to do for herself and not just play sidekick. The skills and tools to find justice for her mother.

Marissa didn't need to think; she extended her hand to Tim's.

"I'm in."

"Good. Training starts tonight." Tim says, shaking her hand. He remembers making this same pact with Bruce long ago, just as Dick had. Perhaps training her would make him better in the long run as well, and help him deal with Giselle's loss.

If nothing else, Tim could now say that he was no longer alone.
