Well, its something. He goes as streamlined as he can, going into a power dive to cover the gap, trying to speed himself up. Its going to be close... possibly very close. And even if he can catch him, he doubts he can stop in time, but at least this way, if he can catch the falling figure, he can turn so Jon takes the impact... probably by going through one of those houses.
