One-sided conversations
Ever since she'd gotten back from her training on Odym, Rose visited her parents' graves everyday. Normally at night, when she'd have the whole cemetery to herself, and after she'd done everything that she needed to for the day.

When she first came back from her training as a Blue Lantern, Rose would just cry whenever she attempted to visit her parents' graves. It wasn't a sign of weakness, just her letting go of some of the pent-up sadness that she'd had inside of her for awhile.

The crying ceased over time, and Rose found herself just sitting on the ground, talking to her parents' graves. In a way, it was just like those conversations that she used to have with her parents everyday when they were alive.

"I was told that I had the ability to instill great hope," she said, "I wasn't sure what that meant at first. I mean, I didn't feel very hopeful after the fire. I mean, I know that you wanted me and Jimmy to go on and live our lives, and take care of each other and Grandma, but I felt like there was this hole inside of me. I couldn't show it at the time, because I had to be there for Jimmy, though, you know? When Green Lantern Rayner and Brother Hymn rescued us, and Brother Hymn offered me the ring, I wasn't sure to accept it. I think...I hesitated a little bit. I didn't know why he'd choose me of all people, and I wasn't sure if I even wanted the ring."

She sighed. She'd had this same conversation with Saint Walker on Odym, during her training.

"Then something that you both taught me popped into my head. Sometimes, the need to help others outweighs the needs of our own. Even though I wanted to scream and cry and curl up into a little ball right there, I knew that I couldn't. I was being offered a chance to help others. People like us that grew up in neighborhoods like the Suicide Slums. Kids like me and Jimmy that maybe didn't have parents like you to point them in the right direction and made sure that they had someone there for them. That they had something to hope for. That was when I knew that I had to take the ring, that Brother Hymn wasn't making a mistake.

When I was on Odym, I missed you everyday. I missed coming home after school and telling you everything about my day. I missed us going to church on Sundays and having breakfast with everyone in the hall after mass. I missed Mom sitting in on choir practice and telling me that she heard me over all the other kids, even though I wasn't singing very loudly. I missed every little detail of our lives together.

At first, I didn't think that it was suitable for me to feel like this when I was supposed to be learning how to give hope to others. But Saint Walker told me that just because I was feeling sad for losing you, it didn't mean that I didn't have hope. Mourning is just a part of helping to deal with loss. It didn't mean that I hoped less, just that I was normal. "

A pause.

"I think you'd really like the Blue Lantern Corps. They've really become a second family to me, and have really helped me in coping with loss. I can't credit them enough for training me, and I only hope that I can be half of the Lantern that Saint Walker is. I've invited them all to visit should they ever find themselves on Earth. Which I hope they do. We're not as big as the Green Lantern Corps, so we're more spread out.

I told Father O'Leary about the ring. He said that it was a sign from God, that I've been chosen by Him to help people. I'm not sure if God did choose me, but I know that with this ring, I can help people."

Another pause.

"I made myself known to the Young Justice League, and the two Green Lanterns here. I don't see myself joining a team of superheroes full time, but I'd offered my services as an ally, should they ever need me. I hope that we can become friends."

Rose stood up.

"I want to show you something," she said, holding up her ring.

She inhaled, before saying the Oath of the Blue Lantern Corps.

"In fearful day, in raging night, with strong hearts full, our souls ignite, when all seems lost in the War of Light, look to the stars...for hope burns bright!"

There was a flash of blue light, and Rose's clothes became her Blue Lantern uniform.

"Pretty cool..huh? Apparently, I can alter it if I want to. Some of the other lanterns have different uniforms, but I think I'll keep the standard one, for now."

Rose looked at her parents' graves, and found herself to be feeling a little happier for 'talking' to them.

"I love you," she said, "I'll come back again tomorrow. I promise."

Rose took flight, flying over the cemetery and back towards Metropolis.
