The fight with the Hulk was over, but a bigger threat now loomed. Apocalypse had risen and once again threatened the world. He closed in on New York. It would be his capital in the world he would shape.

This would be about the time Dorrek is further distracted, as nightmare figures from his memories and dreams take shape around him, Dani's power boosted by Apocalypse and her link with Rahne. The monsters of his dreams attack immediately.

Yes, it's very difficult to focus on your crazy glowing teammate when you've suddenly got an armload of your mother's talon-fingered body trying to scratch your eyes out while her head rolls around at your feet, gibbering and wailing. Dorrek shouts wordlessly in surprise, flinging his mother's body away from himself, only to find--

--Only to find that he'd forgotten how much stories about the Human Torch used to scare him as a hatchling.

Ah, wonderful!

Dani latches onto that image, and the Human Torch grows more 'real', and more demonic, drawn from the deeper childhood hightmares as she assault Dory with his own mind.

Dorrek swears in Skrullos, backing away from the flames as he tries to grow himself a layer of the Thing-like protection. He has to be smart about this, he has to be if he wants to have any chance of surviving.

After a few panicked seconds, Dorrek reabsorbs the stony protection and replaces it with a pair of wings, flapping hard to get altitude.

Distance helps - her powers aren't totally short range, but it still lets him clear his head a little. And because its being drawn from his mind, there's a split second of hesitation, and then the Torch is following, as Dani refocuses her energies.

The clearing of his head lets him know that there's something to clear it of. Dorrek begins looking around for somebody who looks like they're concentrating on him as he dodges the Torch-monster chasing him.

He really wishes that he'd studied more about the X-Men so that he knew who to look for specifically.

Thankfully, Apocalypse's program has encouraged aggression, and Dani is being fed by Rahne's base impulses, so her usual stealth and care isn't there.

The Torch is closing quickly, more demonic looking than before - but if he's quick, he might notice Danielle focusing on him.

Of all of his childhood hobbies, people-watching has proved itself the most useful. It comes to his rescue once again as he spots the Native American woman watching him flee skywards. With the Torch closing in, he doesn't have much time to come up with a plan, but hopefully he won't need much of one.

He feints to his right to try and get himself some breathing room, then folds his wings and drops like a stone back toward the ground -- folds them, but doesn't reabsorb them. He can't look back at his pursuer, but if he plays this right...

At the last moment he snaps his wings open, ignoring the screaming of strained muscles and tendons, and catches enough air to change direction. Instead of hitting the ground, he aims for the woman, trying to catch her with a passing fist rather than the full bulk of his body. He doesn't want to kill her if he doesn't have to, after all.

For good or ill, Dani isn't entirely without combat training. Still, the current illusion is disrupted as she's sent flying back, hitting the ground hard.

Unable to take another shot like that, she reaches out, desperately, trying to tear his greatest of all fears from his head and make it real.

How well can you maintain concentration, and finish her off, in the face of... whatever manifests, Dorrek?

The Torch is gone, which means he's got the right target. Dorrek skids when he hits the ground, adding more scrapes and bruises to his already-battered body and he's pretty sure he just felt the major bone in his right wing snap, but he knows she's not out yet. He can't let her catch her breath, because there are worse things than his dead mom and the Human Torch to throw at him. He scrambles to his feet and lashes out with an extending arm to hit her again, but--

But suddenly there's someone in between them, someone with a red cape and dark hair, and Dorrek's blow is angled for someone else and at at different distance, and humans can be so fragile sometimes, and--

Billy Maximoff hits the dirt, his neck obviously broken. He looks a little surprised, and a lot like he had when Dorrek had kissed him on his way out to buy the engagement ring still in his pocket. Billy even has the same smear of green paint across his cheek.

Dorrek freezes, staring in horror as his heart seizes in his chest. Then he screams -- he's not sure if he says anything, or if he says it in English or Skrullos or Kree -- and lunges for the woman again. Maybe maybe maybe this is her doing; maybe this isn't his Billy, brought here to help by the Timebroker. Maybe if he hits her, the corpse won't be there anymore.

Maybe. Please maybe.

Thankfully, he's right. As Dani's consciousness fades, so does the image of Billy, torn from his mind.

And as she falls, Kev makes his sacrifice, and the threat of Apocalypse is ended in this world forever.

Dorrek forces himself away from the woman when "Billy" fades, even though his fists are itching to hit her again. He falls to his knees and retches in the dirt, dimly aware that the rest of the fighting seems to have stopped as well.

He'll look into that when he's done shaking.
