The Daily Prophet ;; 12 February, 1976

Owls flooded the Great Hall, some carrying letters from home, fewer carrying special care packages. But most were carrying

Her reading done, Glenda grinned when she guessed what the girl across from her was muttering disgustedly about. "Aww, but Dementors are so cute! All cuddly and...frostbitten...and stuff."

She leaned over a bit to snag the jam, and applied it to her cream puff, in traditional Glenda disgusting-taste fashion.

"But yes, they're a bit mental. You'd think that the Prophet would know better than to but them on the front page--it just makes the issue get thrown out that much quicker."

"And you would let them roam around? In danger of where they could be seen by muggles? It's almost a security disaster, imagine explaining one? It's hard enough to explain to magical children." Andromeda screwed her nose up at the jammy cream puff concoction and sniffled delicately, "It's be terrible too if they just floated around, making everyone sad. Quidditch would be rubbish for example."

Glenda bit into her sugar-laden cream puff thoughtfully; it was a testament to years of practice in cream-puff eating that none of the cream exploded out the other side.

"Well, I don't think Muggles see them--they'd just feel deathly chilly and maniacally depressed. So psychiatrists would mysteriously begin to profit enormously, and we get our very own soul-hungry watchdogs! It's genius."

She took another bite, and paused to lick the raspberry jam off her fingers.

"Quidditch would be rubbish, though, and I suppose we can't be having that. Could we get unicorns to protect us? I'm rather fond of unicorns."

Andromeda eyed the cream puff dubiously in case it spewed cream all over her jumper or even her face.

"Muggles surely would know something was wrong though, oh well, the Ministry will never let it happen." She finished her slice of toast and picked up a pear, "Rumour has it there are unicorns in the forest here, but no one's seen them for years. I'm also not sure they can protect us from Dementors."

"Yes, they'd probably notice something, but empirical evidence shows that they would never connect it to invisible ghostly black-robed figures sucking the happiness out of them; Muggles are a bit obtuse like that."

Her cream puff finished, Glenda scooped a hearty serving of eggs onto her plate, topped it with horseradish, and started hunting for the ketchup.

"Andy, unicorns can do anything. I have faith in them."

"I'd suppose not, they don't quite have the mental capacity we do. I suppose if we didn't our minds would explode - must be a fairly similar situation when muggleborns get their letter, well for their families at least." Andy eyed her friends latest dish and decided to stick to the pear.

"For a Ravenclaw you put a lot of faith into one mystical animal."

"I daresay we have our minds exercised from a very young age. Also, for whatever reason, Muggles are very intolerant of magic, society-wise--books tend to be rather vague on the subject, but I think we had a hand in that. It's quite convenient for us that Muggles send all the people who see fairies and people riding broomsticks to the loony bin."

Glenda looked sadly at the last bite of her concoction, mourning the end of an era of egg and condiment goodness.

"The one mystical animal with the natural equivalent of a sword protruding from its head. I say my faith is well-placed."

"I suppose muggles just do as they please, 'cept that one writer chappy who found the photo of fairies, he was adamant magic was real. Wrote some pretty good stuff as well."

Andy stared in wonderment as her friend looked mournfully at a forkful of egg, "Just eat it, you'll have more tomorrow no doubt and we have class in 10 minutes."

"I take it you've drawn up a list and weighed the pros and cons of each mystical animal and decided that unicorns are best? Or is it just a childhood love you're clinging too?"

"Good point," Glenda said, brightening instantly. She finished off the last bite with relish--not to be confused with the actual relish she had added to her eggs halfway through eating them.

She grinned at Andy's query.

"Well, it was about half and half. My mum drew a picture of a unicorn on my nursery wall, so I guess that stuck, but also, unicorns surpass dragons by a hair, mostly because I'm not a fan of being accidentally burned to death."

She toyed with her fork for a second, in deep thought.

"Or maybe not-so-accidentally. Dragons are rather nasty."

Abandoning the fork, she got up off the bench, scrounged up her bookbag from under the table, and gestured at Andy with a grand flourish.

"Shall we, mademoiselle? Herbology awaits with bated breath."

"Dragons are dangerous, but luckily we should never need to cross one. Unless, no, I gave up care of magical creatures." Andy picked up her bag and moved off with Glenda into the crowd.

"Thrilling, plants. Just what I love." She said sarcastically, "More my sisters forte."

"Oh, did you hear about Flitwick's sleepwalking again? He got into greenhouse 1 somehow the other night."

"I still say it's a shame that you did that. We've now got a pool running on which limb Kettleburn's going to lose next. I've got a sickle down on his left foot, and since he's missing two fingers on his left hand, the odds are promising."

She dodged around a first-year, yelping slightly as her heavily-loaded bookbag veered her more sharply off-course than she was comfortable with. However, as she was rather used to this particular effect of gravity, she soon righted herself.

"Really? Your sister? Which? Actually, it must be Narcissa--I can't imagine that Bellatrix has anything to do with plants other than using them for poisons."

"No!" Glenda said, with all the outraged joy of one who has found a prime tidbit of gossip. "Really? How'd they find him? Did he wake up the Mandrakes?"

"I'm fond of my limbs. I think Kettleburn uses his left side to protect his right. You could be onto something."

Andy grabbed at Glenda in case but the girl had righted herself. "Maniacs the lot of them. Yes, Cissa, I saw her over Christmas tending to the most bedraggled thing you've ever seen. It's not seen light in years, Auntie hates plants, and animals and elves and everything. Merlin, I make Cissa sound like she's having an illicit affair with a plant."

"I didn't hear much more, but Sprout turned him round and sent him on his way. I think one of the 7th years doing their project saw the whole thing."
