Chemistry was one of Thoreau's best classes. It was a lot like cooking. You followed a recipe and paid attention to all the intricate little steps and in the end you got exactly what you wanted from it. Plus, he was pretty good at math too so that never threw him off. The only thing that was a problem now was that he and Pansy had been lab partners since they'd started dating. They'd been having lecture classes up until today and it hadn't mattered, but Snape wasn't the sort of professor who let you switch partners because of a break up.

He sighed as he sat next to Pansy, trying not to think about her screwing his best friend. "Hey," he said. "You're here."

Pansy hadn't thought that Thoreau would actually show up. She'd been counting on it, really. She sighed softly and looked back at him when he sat beside her, trying not to feel like strangling him. Which she did.

"Yes. Of course I'm here." Pansy told him with a shrug. "I have to get into a good school. I can't afford to skip classes."

Thoreau echoed Pansy's sigh. "At least I know you won't screw up our experiment today just because you're mad at me for something that's almost entirely your fault," he said. He'd really been hoping she wouldn't come. Everyone was staring at them and whispering.

Thoreau flipped his textbook open to the experiment they were supposed to be doing. "I notice you and Theo have been showing up on Gossip Girl almost daily."

"My fault" Pansy couldn't believe he'd said that. She laughed bitterly and shook her head. "You're an idiot, Thoreau. If you think this was all my fault, you are wrong. You're gay. That's why I didn't want to be with you. Because I was dating someone who treated me like a sister."

She frowned, looking down at her book. "Couples who are happy look happy on Gossip Girl."

Thoreau frowned at Pansy. "I think it's your fault that you started snogging my best friend behind my back instead of breaking up with me first," he told her. "I think it's your fault that the two of you got caught."

He shrugged, starting to get the things they needed set up at the station. "I'm gay. We weren't good together. That doesn't mean you fucking Theo was kosher. It wasn't. All the flailing about my sexuality won't make that okay."

"I seem to recall you snogging my best friend and not even telling me about it." Pansy informed him, shaking her head. "How many other boys were you snogging and not telling me about?"

She shook her head. "You need to get over it. It's not going to change. I'm with Theodore and you're a homo. That's just how things are working out."

"None," Thoreau snapped. "I snogged Draco once, when I was wasted, because he was crying on my shoulder, and he was the one who initiated it. I never did anything else with anyone else."

He stared at her for a moment when she told him he needed to get over it and called him a homo, then slammed his textbook shut. "You know what? I'm not feeling well. I'm ask you to tell Professor Snape that for me, but I don't trust you anymore." Thoreau stood up, trying to ignore that the rest of the class was blatantly staring at them now. "Maybe Daphne will let you partner with her and Theo."

Pansy frowned at that and stood up, grabbing his arm. She dragged him out into the hallway and frowned at him. "What is your problem? Why do you get so mad when I tell you the truth?"

She shook her head. "I love you, Thoreau. And the only way we're going to get past this is if you just accept that things turned out this way because that's how they're supposed to be."

"Do you think I'm upset with you because we're not together?" Thoreau asked. "I'm not. This has nothing to do with that or us being broken up or you figuring out I was gay before I did. I'm upset because you cheated on me with my best friend and everyone found out about it before I did."

He frowned back at her. "I don't know why you think that means I have a problem, or what you think the truth you're telling me us, but that's why I'm mad at you. Because I love you and Theo and neither of you gave enough of a fuck to keep it in your pants until after we broke up."

"I tried breaking up with you, Thoreau. I tried." Pansy shook her head. "And you begged me to stay with you. And I don't even know why you wanted me to stay with you. You weren't happy with me."

She sighed. "Maybe I thought this was the only way to break it off with you."

"Neville is nice, Pansy. You shouldn't call him that anymore. He's dating Daphne," Thoreau said, giving her a disapproving look. "He won't tell anymore than you will."

He sighed. "Why are things suddenly so complicated? Being with you was so easy. I didn't have to worry about Gossip Girl or threesomes or what the protocol for accidentally shagging twins is."

"The protocol is to get tested, you big slut." Pansy told him, laughing softly. "And I don't care that Daphne is dating him. It doesn't make me like him any more than I did."

She leaned against him. "Why was dating me so easy for you? I'm a difficult girl, according to Theodore."

"Right. Fuck. I probably should. If they'd been girls I wouldn't have forgotten the whole protection thing. It's just because I don't have to worry about pregnancy," Thoreau said, running a hand through his hair. "I don't even know how you get tested. Would asking Radley be rude?"

He looked down at Pansy pressed against his side and smiled at her. "We never bickered like you and Theo bicker," he pointed out. "I don't know why it was easy. Because I loved making you happy and I knew how to do that. Because I knew you so well. Because I like being someone's boyfriend and doing things for them."

"Did you completely skip sex education, Thoreau?" Pansy sighed softly. "You just go to the doctor and get tested. It's not that hard. And they won't tell your parents because it's discreet."

"Well, you could still be someone's boyfriend." Pansy pointed out. "You just have to be a boy's boyfriend instead. It won't be difficult to find someone."

"As long as Gossip Girl doesn't find out that I'm getting tested. I don't even really care about my parents. I mean, they'd be worried. I'd probably have to talk to them about it, which would suck, but they wouldn't get mad," Thoreau said, looking up as they got to his townhouse. "Speaking of parents."

He smiled at Pansy. "I wouldn't mind being Radley's boyfriend," he said. "We kind of talked about going on a date. I liked Rooney too, but considering he's a supply teacher that might get complicated." He opened the door to his house. "We'll see. Dad? Are you home?"

Rabastan had been fiddling around in the kitchen when he heard his son calling his name. He frowned for a moment, then looked down at his watch, seeing what time it was.

He walked through to the foyer where his son was and smiled at him. "Skipping school?" He asked, then looked at Pansy. "Pansy. It's good to see you."

"You too, Sir." Pansy nodded. "It's been a while. Thoreau and I have been in a bit of a fight and we wanted to-"

"I read Gossip Girl." Rabastan smiled at her and shrugged. "Are you hungry?"

"Yeah," Thoreau said, smiling at his father. "We were hoping you could make us something. We sort of just made up after getting into a fight during Chemistry. Staying for the rest of the day seemed like it would be listening to a lot of whispers. There's probably a post on Gossip Girl about us already."

He took off his coat and then took Pansy's for her, hanging them up. "We're not back together, but I think we're back to being friends." Thoreau glanced at his father. "What are you cooking?"

"Of course you're not back together." Rabastan shrugged as he looked at his son, walking into the kitchen. "I've known for a while that you and Pansy wouldn't work out, but I was letting you have a go at it yourself."

He smiled at his son. "Just some beef stew. An old friend got into contact with me and I was inviting him over for lunch."

Thoreau followed his father into the kitchen with Pansy. He felt a little bit nervous, but his dad didn't care that Draco was gay, right? Honestly, he'd probably already figured it out. "Did you know that I was gay too?" he asked. "Because that took me a while and a lot of Pansy yelling at me."

He shifted in front of his father, clamping down on the butterflies that appeared in his stomach as soon as the truth was out. "An old friend?"

Thoreau was feeling a little shell-shocked by all the information being shared. He looked at Pansy. "Good idea," he said, nodding. "Dad, we're going to leave you and your friend to catch up."

He hugged his father quickly. "Have fun. The stew smells great. It was nice meeting you, Mister Macnair." Thoreau looked back at Pansy, offering her his hand. "Let's given them some alone time."

Pansy led Thoreau out of the house and looked back at him. "I don't even know what to stay right now." She told him, shaking her head, feeling very confused. "I mean... I used to worship your parents marriage. I could have..."

She paused. "Oh god. I could have been like your mother."

"You think you're at a loss for words? I just found out my dad is gay," Thoreau said, giving Pansy a pained look. "Just... Mum never said anything, but they all went to school together. She has to know something, right?"

He ran a hand through his hair. "I mean, fuck. Dad had to top me, didn't he? Let's eat somewhere not owned by my family."

"I don't think he knew that you were going to come home today and see him with his old boyfriend." Pansy told him with a laugh. "I don't think that he was trying to top you."

Thoreau laughed, hailing a cab to take them there. "If that's what you want," he said, nodding. "I'll take you anywhere you'd like to go. We can pretend I didn't somehow hook up with my dad's ex-boyfriend's sons."

He opened the door for Pansy, helping her in, and then slid in beside her. "Do you think we're on Gossip Girl yet? I bet she reports that we're back together."

"That is so weird, isn't it?" Pansy asked, shaking her head. "That you just happened to find Walden's son and hooked up with not one, but two of them."

He laced their fingers together. "My dad's the one who hired Radley, so it's his fault. Oh God. I think this means we have the same taste in men."

"Right," Thoreau said, smiling at Pansy and wrapping his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. He kissed her forehead. "Best friends who'll laugh when she tells everyone we're a couple again."
