Who: Sakura, Shikamaru
What: How they met could really shed light on why she was so annoyed with him all the time.
Where: Intro to Bio.
When: One year ago, 2nd week of their freshman year.
Warnings: Backdated like holy crap.

It was great. In a way.

Her roommate at the college dorms had kept her on all night with her talk about this boy and that boy and how Sakura needed a date so badly because, like, that weekend they'd have to go to a frat party all the way in the Engineering campus. She was tired, wanted a coffee for the first time in her college life, and the guy next to her was tempting her into doing the exact same thing he was. Sleeping.

Except, no. He also annoyed her. Because his soft snoring was keeping her from taking notes, and she liked this class (so far). Okay, they weren't snoring, more like deep breathing, but it was embarrassing. Had he no shame? No education? Just who was he, to come to this course and snooze off like...like his rich parents were paying for his education but he really couldn't care less.

'Others have to work they way to the top, you know?' she thought, directing the snoozing lazy-ass beside her a glare from the corner of her eyes. 'We don't have the luxury of sleeping because our roommates are too noisy, too annoying, too dumb -- oh God, wake up.' So angry was she at his carefree attitude, and the way he slept made her so envious, that she couldn't help it.

Making sure the professor was looking away, she elbowed the benchmate in the side.

If there was one thing he could trust, it was his instincts. His instincts pointed him out to the one girl in class who he labeled as most likely to be paying attention and smart enough to actually understand what was being explained in class. And in all his analysis, Shikamaru took the time to sit next to the pink-haired anomaly, crossing his arms, lowering his head, and falling into a light slumber because he was just the type of person who just had to sleep.

He thought too much. To him, just sitting around and waiting for sleep to overtake him in bed was probably asking too much of his life. No, he needed to be doing something, keep away from a blank mind, and other useless excuses in order to be able to sleep.

So, he reasoned, him sleeping through class wasn't his fault. He didn't choose to be born with a mind that moved too fast for his own good—why should he be held accountable for it? As long as he got the end results, that's what mattered the most. It was what he believed in, and would always believe in.

Quite the opposite from one Haruno Sakura.

Elbowed on the shoulder, Shikamaru mumbled something underneath his breath before letting out a quiet yawn just as the professor finished his lecture. Not even opening his eyes, he waited in that way that made him look like the laziest son of a bitch in the classroom—lazier than the entire class population put together.

("Class is over, but recitation will start in fifteen minutes.")

"What a pain."

Sakura's eyebrow twitched angrily, and she closed her notebook with a loud noise. "You know," she muttered to him. "The concept of keeping awake in class is, in the first place, there to mean respect towards others, especially the professor."

"I'm sure he'll understand," Shikamaru replied flatly, finally opening his eyes as he looked around the room. About half the class had left for good, and another quarter for a breather of fresh air. The other quarter of the class remained, either conversing or looking through their notes. He wasn't surprised, really. These were the statistics of any first recitation, more than six weeks before the proposed midterm.

Oh. The professor erased the board. Well, there went his idea of winging it without asking anyone for help.

"Did you take notes?"

"I'm sure he would appreciate it if you didn't, though," she replied just as flatly. She was just packing her things in order to make a quick run to the cafeteria for a cup of coffee before class recommenced when she heard the question.

At first she reacted with indignation. "Of course I took--" Then she paused. Gave him a critical look. "Wait..." And pressed her lips together until they were a thin line. "No."

"You can go out and get your coffee, and by time you get back, I'll give them right back."

Not that he could copy them anyway. No paper, no notebook, no pen or pencil—it showed because just about the only thing he brought to the class was... absolutely nothing, really. But if there was anything that was apparent about Shikamaru, it was that he seemed too damn lazy to tell a lie. Not about simple things like borrowing notes, anyway.

A pause.

She was staring at him like he was the worst person to have graced the planet.

"What?"

"I said no. I'm not giving you my notes. You start with sleeping in class today and mooching off my notes, and then ten years from now a patient gets lung infection because you were too lazy to do your own responsible work during college," she ranted, on and on, defender of responsible students that she had been her whole life.

She was saying something, but something told him that it was irrelevant to what he wanted. One of those nagging types, huh? He could deal with that, if he blocked off about ninety percent of what she was saying.

"Wanting to see the class outline," he replied, not really paying attention to whatever the hell she was going on about at the moment, "Doesn't really have to do with whatever you're coming up with to prove your point."

Her notes? Not interested. The outline of the topics today? Interested.

"...you're not even listening to me." The nerve. The nerve. Well, good thing she wasn't in college to make friends. Any other time or place, she would've given him the notes, and asked if he needed clarification.

But it was a race to the top starting college, and competivity ran in the blood between Japanese youngsters. It was something they were taught from their childhood and ongoing.

The infamous race to the top of medical students: Shikamaru would never understand it, because he had always been exempt from the actual race. He had always been an unfair factor to everyone else around him, right?

"You have two minutes."

And if there was anything else he was good at other than being a smartass, it was delaying people. Either way, Sakura would not get that cup of coffee of hers because she was the type of student, Shikamaru figured, that didn't like to be late. Always present, always early, always prepared. She was that student. She would be that student for the rest of her college career.

Properly IDing the girl as such, Shikamaru finally (slowly) pushed himself off the chair, making it seem like it was the hardest thing on earth to do.

Damn that chair was comfy.

Screw coffee.

Well, not screw coffee--she had really wanted that cup, needed it, but now it was pointless. And it was his fault. This guy. He was either one of those aloof geniuses who thought that just because their brain was bigger it gave them the right to flaunt it in front of everybody like this. Well, even geniuses had to learn.

This one would learn to either stay awake or pick another benchmate the next time.

Pity. She hated being a bitch. ...most of the time. "I'll skip the coffee."

He let the two minutes be the longest two minutes that Sakura ever had to experience. Either way, once those two minutes were up, he sighed and muttered something underneath his breath, rolling his shoulders as if he just came back from some sort of intense exercise. In sleeping.

Two hour lectures never really appealed to Shikamaru until now.

"Then I guess this is when you sit down, Haruno." And when the hell did he catch her name? Probably the four million times she raised her hand during class. He had to have been awake for at least two minutes of that.

Finally stepping to the front of the classroom, he watched the students trickle in one by one, until half the class was full. "Man, what a hassle... hurry up. The faster you guys can settle down, the earlier we can get out of this place."

She sat down and waited, those two minutes, thinking about how awesome coffee would have been, and how she should've been nicer. Given him a peek. But if she gave him a peek, then another one would ask for one, and another, and another, and it would've been high-school all over.

The mortification comes when he went up in front of the classroom. Sakura paled. 'No way.' The professor had mentioned something about a TA, but...'Oh God, no way. Please not him, please not him, please not him.'

All politeness forgotten, she slammed her forehead against the desk.

He waited quietly, letting the last group of students settle down in their seats, leaning back against the desk behind him. There was an unusual calm about the way he approached everything, almost irritatingly so. Instead, he let out a sigh and pushed himself forward, rubbing the back of his neck.

THUD.

"Ah. So that forehead is good for something," he dryly commented, raising a brow at the K.O.'ed girl. "The name's Nara Shikamaru. My contact information is on the syllabus you got last week, so there's no reason to bother repeating what you guys should already know. I'm supposed to go over today's topic with you guys just in case you guys had any questions, but unfortunately for you all—"

Yeah, he's going there. :')

"—Haruno decided to be stingy and not let me look at your class outline. That means I don't know you were assigned, and so, you're on your own for next week's problem sets. All for one, one for all."

The horror. How was she supposed to know the TA had sat right next to her?! He was--he was her age, for crying out loud. She could feel the glares of the rest of the class on her back, and forced herself to think that it was fine. Let them hate her.

Except what came out was a small sob and another thud against the table.

It wasn't within his intention to let Sakura be the laughingstock of the class, but really. He only wanted to see the class outline. Regardless of the fact, he waited a bit for the clamoring to stop, before: "Any questions?"

("The problem sets were on page four-twelve, sir!")

Pointedly ignored.

"No? I guess we'll start with the basics, then."

Sobbing was out of the question. She had seen others go through this before. She'd just make it up to the class later.

Or run as soon as the class was over. That was better.

So she lifted her head and resisted throwing a glare at the fucking TA, before picking up her material.

It was nothing personal. There was nothing smug about the way Shikamaru was handling the situation, because he had already moved on. Whatever way the class was going to deal with the situation was none of his business, because while he was the same age with about a majority of the class, he wasn't a part of the same class. The school administration had made sure of it. If they suffered together, well, he wouldn't be a part of them.

"We'll begin with..."

&c.
