House-Hunting
Bucky (it was still really hard to think of himself by that name) walked down the streets of New York toward the next loft on his list, which was only a block or two away. Every few steps he corrects his movements so that he doesn't bump someone or only brushes against them, years of training allowing him to slide through the crowd with ease. The movements are so ingrained that they're second-nature. He could do this on the streets of New York, Tokyo or Moscow, in his sleep.

His "baby-sitter" could as well.

He knows why Fury sent Natalia with him and he's annoyed; not at her, but at the situation. They still don't know if he's completely deprogrammed, but if he isn't then Natalia is the best person to deal with him. She could make the tough choice, if necessary.

"You know...you /really/ don't have to do this." James says to Natalia, for the third time as they enter the building on 4th and Baker. He rings the bell and the door opens upon a small, older woman who smiles at him.

"Hello, Mr. Barnes. My office told me you'd be stopping in today. The loft is ready for you to view." she says, looking between the two of them.

"And what happens when I leave the toilet seat up or you decide you want to hog the blankets? Then I'm back to looking for a new place to live." he jokes, giving her a smile.

"Really, though...I need to know I can do this on my own, Natalia. This is the first time in years I've had to fend for myself and I've got know I can do that before I get involved anywhere else." James says.

"But yeah this place is really spacious. I think the weights and balance beam can go over there." he says, pointing to the far left corner of the room.

"What do you think the chances are that Fury can get me an adamantium combat knife?" he asks suddenly.

She turned away from him. "Does that also include us?" she asked.

Logically she knew they couldn't just pick up where they left off so many decades ago, but since seeing him a year ago she couldn't do anything but think of him and them. She had a year to think about him and the feelings she had for him. God help her, she still loved him.

And he'd managed to stick his foot in his mouth already. Great.

He still loved her. Even in the first days after they'd brought him in, there was something about her that made him stop and /think/ about the things he was doing, and who he was as a person. Her continued influence and caring were among the reasons he'd made the progress he'd made so far.

But he also knew that they were two very different people from who they were decades ago. Did he still love her or only the memory he had of her? Could she love the man he'd become, the Winter Soldier?

"Natalia, are you /sure/ you could love someone like me? I've done a lot of things that, frankly, I don't know if I can forgive myself for. I'm not a good man like Steve.

I'm a soldier and a killer. I'm the kind of man you've spent years taking down.

If you're asking if I still love you, the answer is yes." James says.

"But I can't lean on you. I can't expect you to fix me. I'm trying to show you that I can do that for myself." he says.

Natasha bowed her head. "Yes," she said. "I have never stopped loving you, James."

The Black Widow was known for a lot of things, one of those being an expert liar, but she wasn't lying now. She had always loved him and he had always been in her heart. Even through the relationships she had been in and out of over the years. Alexi. Clint. Matt. Hercules. Tony. Were they all just attempts to fill the void left when James had been ripped away from her?

"Can you love someone like me? I'm not the same foolish young girl you knew. I've done things that I'm not proud of and that would make Steve go pale."

"I'm not coming into this with any illusions, Natalia. I know you've been through a lot, too." he says.

"But...if you can put up with me and my hang-ups, I can definitely put up with you and yours. Besides, you're the one of the only people who can really understand where I've been and what I've been through. We're probably older than the lady trying to sell me this place." James laughs, walking over and pull her close to him.

"I still love you, Natalia. I'm going to, even if you won't let me." he says in Russian.

"Will you help me christen this place if I go with it?" he asks.

She turned and allowed him to pull her in. She looked up at him and kissed him. "And I still love you," she said after the kiss. She smiled. "I will, but only after we get you some proper furniture. I am an old woman, my love. I enjoy my creature comforts."

"Old woman?" James laughs as she kisses him. "Age is just a number, Natalia.

But if you want, you can do the furniture shopping. No pink, though. Knowing me, I'll pick the first think I lay eyes on...unless it's a weight set." he says.

"Good. Make you get a bed you like laying on. You'll be spending a lot of time in it." James teases.

Natasha wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. "Promise?"

She heard the Realtor come back into the room and she kissed James once more before releasing him.

"Promise." he says, kissing her lips, then her brow, then her lips again as the Realtor returned.

She smiles at the two of them, a strange look crossing her face.

"Have you had time to look, sir? Any questions or concerns?" she asks.

"I think I like it enough to go with it. How do we get that set up?" he asks.

"Well, we can do that right now." she says, leading him to the counter and grasping her briefcase to get the contracts.

Natasha took James' hand and squeezed it as she asked the next question.

"Before anything is signed, how much is rent?" She looked at James. "Or are you going to buy it?"

"Much as I'd love to buy it, I'm going to have to go with renting for the time being." James says.

"Well, you can rent-to-own, as well, if that's something you're interested in." the Realtor says. "And we can work with you on the price." she says.

"I'm going to look around more while you two hammer out the details," Natasha said and gave the Realtor a smile. She gave James' hand another squeeze and then went to check out the bathroom and bedroom.

James does just that, talking to the Realtor at length about what he could and couldn't do in the loft. The woman asks him at one point if he has any family in the service and he mentions that his father was, a long time ago.

"Sorry, you just remind me of someone I saw in an old black-and-white reel. Captain America and his partner, Bucky, rescued my grandfather in German, toward the war's end. He always, always talked about how good those two men were.

I'm sure it's my old eyes, but you look a lot like him. I had the biggest crush on Bucky." she smiles.

"You're the first person to say that." he says, offering her a smile.

"I'll have the contract drawn up and we can meet up again on Friday to finalize everything. You and your wife can stay and look around a bit. The garage downstairs is pretty big, too. Several cars can fit down there and it's even got a workstation for a motorcycle." the Realtor says, turning to go.

When she leaves, he goes to find Tasha.

"I think that woman recognized me from an old black-and-white reel. This whole blending in thing is going to be tough if people figure out I'm me." he says.

"It's going to happen, my love," she said. "Almost everyone knows Captain America and Bucky. You could always say he was your grandfather if they ask."

"I suppose the grandfather excuse works. I can just say I'm an old soul, which really gets to the old ladies out there." James says, wrapping his arms around Tasha.

"Thanks for coming today." he whispers in her ear.

"It better be just /this/ old lady," she said as she wrapped her arms around his neck. She kissed him long and deep.

James returns the kiss, holding her close to him. A few minutes ago, he thought there was something missing in this place when he looked around. He couldn't figure out if it was the lighting, or just the way the shadows fell, but when Tasha came back, realized immediately what it was: the same thing that was always missing, even when he was in that cell on the helicarrier.

Her. Always her.

"I suppose staying at your place couldn't hurt. Beats that mausoleum Fury calls a helicarrier any day of the week." James says.

"Are you hungry? We could stop and get something on they way to your place." he says.
