New Digs (Open to SA) @ 10:47 am

Well it wasn't Avengers Mansion, or any other place nice, but it would serve for their purposes. The old underground SHIELD base hadn't been used in a decade or two and it would be the new home of the Secret Avengers. The underground facility had everything a team could need. It had a kitchen and dining area, conference room complete with communications equipment, sleeping quarters, motor pool area and even a medical bay. The only thing it didn't have was windows, but they weren't a necessity, only a liability.

It had been cleaned out and the equipment upgraded before it was time to move in.

Natasha sat in the conference room looking at satellite feeds over the area they had gone to on their first mission. A steaming cup of black coffee sat on the table. She had arrived two days ago and was expecting the "team" to start arriving to check out their new base any time now.

In Russia @ 06:25 pm

The modified QuinJet landed in a small clearing outside of a small complex in the countryside not far from Moscow. The light of the full moon made it easier for the Avengers to see, but it also made them easier to see by the guards patrolling the outside of the complex.

The call comes in about 4:20 am EST.

A man in crimson armor climbs out of a harbor in Manhattan, barely able to stand. He collapses, water-logged and battered, upon the ground. He lit up American airspace alerts two or three miles out, but he moved too quickly for anyone to mount an adequate response.

Two hours later, Crimson Dynamo sits in an interrogation room on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, awaiting someone, anyone who will hear him out. It galls him to ask the Americans for help, but he has no choice.

He is betraying his country to save it from a monster.

One By One @ 02:49 am

[info]black_widow:

Natasha had a list of names of possible Secret Avengers, as the team was going to unofficially be called, that she and Steve had put together. Now it was time to go and talk to each of them to see if they would be interested.

She went to the first name on the list.

 Dammit, Banner.

Thaddeus Ross hates what's left of his life right now.  He was once a 4-star general in the United States Air Force, and now he has to stew in an elaborate holding pen devised by the man he hates most in this world.  He devoted the last several years of his career to hunting down and killing the Hulk only to become something just as dangerous and monstrous as that beast he despises.  The world thinks he's dead, and he can't tell them otherwise, lest his collusion with supervillains and his ill-fated treason completely destroy his legacy.

Now he's trapped in every way a man can be trapped.  Stuck for who knows how long in the body of this blasted red hulk.

Red.  It had to be red, didn't it, Sterns?  Spent all those years fighting communists, and now this.  Better dead than red.

The only comfort he has is that he did it all for his daughter.  Betty.  And even that solace is mitigated by the fact that the Leader and MODOK turned her into a goddamned she-hulk.  And she's off with Banner and his misbegotten family of freaks.

There's only one way out of this predicament, and it's not something he's looking forward to, but the options are limited.  Accepting charity from Banner sticks in his craw, but the man has set up an opportunity for Ross to work off his debt to society in service of the Avengers.  Most of whom hate his guts and know him only as that sneering bastard who fought them at every turn, even going so far as to form The Offenders just to spite the Defenders... going so far as punching the Watcher in the face.  All that insanity was way out of his usual character... but this power, this incredible power... he was absolutely drunk on it.  Secretly wanting power enough to match the first Hulk for so long, then finally getting it... it does something to you.  Took him a long time to get a hold of himself.  Too long.  Everything's shot all to hell.

So, it's either rot in prison, or indentured servitude to the Avengers.  After spending so many years as a leader of men, this will be hard to swallow.

The only mitigating factor is that he'll be following the orders of the one man he respects more than the chain of command... Captain America.  Thaddeus Ross would die for that man.

So it's time to play ball.
