Rescuing the bride to be
Svalin was always a bit disorientated after one of Asleif's teleportation spells. She shook off the nauseous feeling and looked around. This was the realm of the Celtic gods, but more importantly the lair of Manawydan. Somewhere inside one of the buildings up ahead, her sister was being held prisoner.

Svalin hoped they had arrived before the wedding.

She drew her sword and readied her shield.

"For Asgard!" she yelled and held her sword aloft. Talking was not an option at this point.

Halbjorn's wake is easy enough to follow, and he is only watching his back to the degree that his broad, sweeping attacks arc wide enough at times to dash aside some of the people trying to get there. A few of the spears bite flesh, but not deep, the shortswords are even less effective, and the smell of blood, his own or otherwise, just spurs him on.

The Celts, though trained warriors, fall easily to the onslaught of the Asgardians' attacks. Many fall, but many are left to strike with swords and spears.

Svalin felt the strikes and the warmth of her blood on her, but she kept pressing on. The two of them needed to give the others time to find Aridis.

There is no more strategy. There may be some question if Halbjorn would even know who Aridis was or remember any goal right now. There's fresh blood, steel and chaos, and he's glorying in every moment like it was his last. A few of the worst wounds on him are simply from the times he's thrown himself virtually onto spears to get to the enemy quicker, and he has a few of the enemy weapons still stuck into and through him.
He's heedless, just mowing down everything that moves and daring anything else to stand in his way.

The Celts did try to fight the Asgardians, but the Asgardians were more trained and better armed than the Celts.

Still, spears and swords did not stop. They would die to the last to protect their lord.

Svalin was in better shape than her brother. She kept an eye on her back and would turn to fight the Celts trying to run a spear through her.

Her sword cut through wooden shafts of the spears and her shield deflected sword blows. She pressed on to try to catch up to her brother. She couldn't let him fall.

Sometimes catching up is easy, he leaves a large wake. Sometimes they try and close ranks behind him. He's not in as good a shape, he never is in a battle like this, but he also doesn't care, he's just taking down as many as possible, more than willing to die so his sister might live free if that's what it takes, scattering Celts before him.

If they're up for laying their lives down for their lord, then who is he to stop them from doing so?

At this point some of the Celts realize that there is no stopping the beserker. Some flee and others back away hesitantly.

Others close in around the woman.

"For Asgard!" Svalin yelled and attacked the ones circling her. Spears and swords bit into flesh, but she could worry about her injuries later. Right now there were enemies to fight.

Her sword, a wonderful sword at that, kept moving and spears shattered against her shield. Screams came from the Celts around her.

Despite all the blood, the two spears stuck through him, and the rage, Halbjorn recognizes, even savors their fear, and somewhere might even register Svalin's battle-cry.
He grins savagely, dismissing those who flee and charging towards the nearest sign of battle. There's no intent to help his sister, per se, but better to attack fighters than cowards.

The Celts around Halbjorn are mowed down like high grass. The remaining Celts decide to focus on the woman. She was a little less dangerous and more cautious about fighting.

Svalin kept her sword moving and tried to block as many attacks with her shield as she could. Sharp edges from swords and spear points bit into flesh and each one was met with a grunt.

Weirdly, this sort of has the effect they were looking for, if not the way they wanted it. As long as the fight is going another direction, Halbjorn follows it, currently leading him away from Manawydan's home and towards those attacking his sister. There's no tactical thinking or care to it, just the simple expedient that there's still a fight here eventually leads to most of one flank being cleared and protected as he continues to attack, scattering the Celts even when he's injured in the process, far less efficient now that they're spread more thin, so he has to dismember them one at a time instead of the sweeping axe attacks cutting down swaths.

The question remains, in this state, if Svalin really wants him all that near her. He's always remembered her before, but there's a first time for everything.

The remaining few Celts scatter before Halbjorn's onslaught. They ran back toward the fortress.

Svalin was breathing heavy and covered in blood. A lot was hers, but even more was from the Celts. She looked at her brother. This was not good. She knew that look on his face.

"Brother!" she said firmly. "Calm thy self!" she ordered.

Any other voice, any other, perhaps even his own mother's, and it might not matter. He's been lost to the rage many times, but rarely this bad. He came in angry, his sister was kidnapped. And then they threw everything they could at him. He smells blood and fear and steel, its invigorating. He tastes blood, his and theirs, and its intoxicating. He lives for this, he will die for this, the rest is details.

All save one thing. His sister is the princess of Asgard. He knows her voice and her command, and his life, one day, will be forfeit to save hers. All for Asgard, and his sister at its head.

He collapses forward onto one knee. Its a gesture of exhaustion, of effort to fight the blood-fury, and a sign of his wounds. But it ends up looking, and thus being very much one of fealty.

He doesn't speak. He can't. He's not far enough back yet that words mean anything. Only blood, death, vengeance and duty have meaning, and all those are deeper than words. And his sister - that's the very sign of his oath and duty.

Svalin dropped to her knees next to him. He is her brother before anything else. She was the eldest of the four and it was her responsibility to look after her siblings. Just like it would be her responsibility to look after all the inhabitants of Asgard.

"I need to tend thine wounds, brother," she said as she ripped material from a dead Celt. "Thou art not allowed to go to Valhalla today." The fierce shield-maiden melted into a concerned sister.

He allows her to do so. Despite appearances, the injuries aren't /that/ bad, as quick healing Asgardians go. Yes, there's spears through him, but not through anything truly vital. There is at least the survival instincts of a rabid, frenzied animal in there somewhere.

At the moment, the sheer quiet from the berserker is more a combination of the exhaustion that follows the rage, and realization of how close he came to hurting the princess.

He nods, stretching that arm above his head to stretch the region as much as possible so it will push more cleanly.
"T'will, but methinks the other wast a better shot. Hm, thou wouldst likely be better pushing it through than pulling, from where the head is."
Between these two, yes, this is a conversation they've had before.
"Art the others back yet?"

"This ist not my first time removing a spear from you, brother." Svalin shook her head, took a deep breath and then pushed the spear the rest of the way through him.

"Nay. They art still inside."

When its through, he picks up the bloody spear, moving his arm so she can get to the other one easier. "Twas a fair shot. Wast there someone of that skill amongst them, or didst I drive myself onto it to take his head?" he asks curiously, never quite sure. "He shouldst have a good pyre if twas the former... or do Celts bury their dead? I canst ne'er remember."

He nods to the second hopefully. "Art we still waiting for them and this ridiculous plan then, or doth we get to go and remove the offender's hands and any other body part that mayst hath touched our sister?"

"It wast the latter," Svalin said as she moved to get a good grip on the spear shaft. "Thou wert under the influence of the battle frenzy." She started to push. "I doth not know. The Celts hath always been most strange."

She smiles a little. "We art going to hunt him." The spear was out and she started binding the wounds. Unconsciously she started healing him. "Then make him pay for daring to touch our sister."

He curses bitterly, snapping the spear in his hands in his frustration. "Gods be-damned Celts. Don't they teach their children anything these days! I wast hopeful at least one of them hadst some skill to him that I couldst honor them and come away with some memory other than blue-faced wilting flowers pissing themselves. It assaults mine senses e'en now with the smell of it."
He's far more upset that he had to do all the work of running himself through for them than he is about running himself through. And definitely more than about her working it out of him.

The latter news helps a bit. "Dost thou want his head or some other bit of him? I wilt be sure it survives if so."

Svalin was as angry as her brother, but not for the same reason. Her siblings were her responsibility and she had failed her sister. She was angry at herself along with being angry at the Celt who took Aridis.

"Thou canst have what I leave for you," she told him as she kept working on binding his wounds.

"I get first shot at the knave for abducting my twin sister."
