Miles To Go, Before You're Done Apologizing
After sufficiently bracing herself for any potential reactions she can foresee, Vincent heads home, avoiding Valeria, as she still doesn't know what to say to her. As usual, he bypasses the lobby in favor of the rooftop access, heading down to the common area. He winces as he walks past Andrea's room, still next to his own. He wonders how long that will last.

She settles into her room, freshening some of the bandages she'd already been fitted with, due to her combat with Halbjorn.

She knows he doesn't need to call Kristoff. Even as hurt as he must still be, her brother's presence is something she can always exp---

No.

No more assumptions. No more of taking him for granted. Not when she can at least stop to think that much. Vincent abruptly finishes the changes quickly, and heads to the intercom.

"Kristoff... I'm home." She swallows, nervous. "Something has happened."

Valeria frowned. "Let me get this straight then, you chose them, who really, when you think about it, only chose you because they needed you, over us, the people that actually care about you." Valeria folded her arms over her chest. "Because really, that's what it seems like you did."

She winces. "I won't lie to you. It never even occurred to me that they were only calling on me because it was their time of need. I could only think that I was truly being recognized by them.

It's something I never had... no matter how much I worked for it."

She lifts her head, not letting herself look away.

"It wasn't a choice I made easily. I didn't want to choose to be one or the other, but I had to be who I was born as, an Asgardian. That doesn't mean I care about any of you any less. I grew up with you. I was terrified of just being that... that thing Demogorge left me as.

I wanted to be someone who could stand with the place I was born in their hour of greatest need, and someone who had the power to protect the people of my home."

She clears her throat. "Kristoff and Andrea have already made it clear how hurtful what I did was, and I feel sick about it. I want to make this right, whatever it takes."

She just doesn't know how.

Valeria was silent for minute after he finished speaking.

"I can see why they'd be hurt," she said blandly. "I'm disappointed in you. We wouldn't have turned our backs on you. We needed you too. More than Asgard. We needed you, you were given a choice and you chose power over family. I wouldn't have done that. Franklin wouldn't have done that. We would have given up our lives if it meant you would be safe."

Valeria just stared at him.

"I don't think I'll ever be able to trust you again. Or at least, not as much as I used to."

Vincent draws herself up, slightly.

"It wasn't just the power. It's part of who I am. Asgardians have a 'spark' to them... and mine had been snuffed out."

She wilts somewhat again.

"I thought I was making the best of the situation.. making myself whole again so I could still belong here, able to protect all of you, and still being put back together again myself...

It's still too complicated for me to say if it was right or wrong.. I can only apologize for hurting you."

She stares right back.

"I'm not Franklin, Valeria. I'm not human. I don't have the luxury of things being so simple for me.

Whatever choice I made, it was never to not care about any of you. It's specifically BECAUSE I don't want any of you to ever give up your lives for me that was part of why I couldn't stand being that way. I want to see every one of you live a long and full life, for the life you've given me until now. That's the cross I chose to bear... to go on alone past all mortal reckoning."

She swallows hard. "I made a stupid decision in not thinking of all the consequences."

"You weren't. We needed you. It didn't matter that you didn't have that 'spark', we just needed you there."

A pause.

"And you weren't there. 'Sorry' is not going to wipe away the fact that you weren't there</b." She was angry now. There was no hiding it. "And things have never been 'simple' for Franklin and I. You're making yourself seem like some sort of martyr. That you made some Great Big Sacrifice by leaving us. And while it may seem that way to you- you abandoned us. That's all it really was." Valeria turned to leave. "I have nothing else to say to you. Other than you should have thought it over more carefully. It'll be a long time before you can 'make up' for this. And changing genders isn't going to help it move along any faster."

"The particular change in physical composition is inconsequential. Right now I'd tolerate being turned into a frog until I figured how to change myself back on my own." She's growing somewhat frustrated herself, but she's trying not to let it show.

"I know that 'sorry' doesn't fix it, I'm just trying to make it understood why I did what I did; and I don't mean to imply that things are simple in entirety for you and Franklin. I mean that you've always know who you are. My whole life I had no real connection to where I came from, and this was the first and probably last chance I would ever get. I still came back because even with that, I couldn't imagine my life without all of you."

She winces as Valeria heads away.

"Valeria... you're the closest thing I have in this or any world to a sister. You've known me since I was eight years old. I don't want to lose you because of this."

"Then you really should have thought that through before you decided to turn your back on your family." Valeria turned her head over her shoulder before she left the room. "Nice to see that you aren't dead, though."

"I have to go. I need to see how my brother is doing."

And she was gone.

"Give him my best, if he's awake..." Vincent calls after her, not knowing what else to say.

After she's sure Valeria is gone, she goes about reapplying the salve to her injuries. She has work to do, and she needs to be healed first.
