The Other Asgard
Svalin had promised Vernique a trip west when Svalin went, but Halbjorn was here in the city to get changed back into a male. Svalin still needed to go and get her other weapons and gear, but she could wait. Her brother was recovering from his injuries and Svalin knew what would help the process along. Mead. And lots of it.

There wasn't mead in the Avengers mansion, but Svalin knew where they could get some. With that in mind she went looking for Vernique. Perhaps she would accompany Svalin and Halbjorn to Asgard.

Svalin just shrugged at the mention of the medics. She had been seeing to her brother's wounds and recoveries more than they had.

"As the mortals say, you art buying."

He walks forward, offering Vernique an arm. "I hadst some small chance to recover a bit of coin at home. The first round ist on me. And dinner as well. I hath quite the appetite."

Vernique takes it happily. "Why thank you." Vernique certainly wasn't the sort to fight for the check unless there was some kind of point to be made or other necessity. "So how's the family as a whole?" She manages to address them both as they walk along.

"E'eryone was well enow when we wert last in Asgard." Svalin smiled. "Our brother hath gotten himself a shield-maiden. Young Hjordis wilt make a fine Maiden or e'en a Valkyrie some day." Svalin paused. "Provided she doth not give up the sword for a family."

"Aye, she didst show her mettle quite well in the battle. And methinks our little brother wast quite startled to find himself with an official entourage. Mayhap she wilt keep him from too much trouble."

"Aw. A grandparentally-sanctioned sidekick? That's great. I don't know too much about these things; do a lot of Asgardian girls cut short promising shieldmaiden careers to settle down, or do most of them make up their minds one way or the other pretty early on?"

"Skari stay out of trouble? Surely thy jest." Svalin thought about the question for a moment. "Most decide around fifteen years if they want the sword or a family. Some know long before then, others give up the sword later. Some doth not give up the sword and take a wife as well as a husband."

"Aye, among mortal kind, twas most uncommon for young women to follow the warrior way, but twas a choice. Most wished a vote in council, the rights of women, and a chance for family. Amongst the gods, tis somewhat more common to follow Svalin's path and choose to keep the sword, but still, far more choose to hold possibility of a home and family."

"So are all civic and business-type concerns more of a woman's thing? Have to say, I'd have to hang up the taser for that, myself, if it came down."

"Aye. Women own all property except for weapons, horses and ships and possibly a mead hall. They deal with matters of law, run the house and raise the children. The warriors art responsible for protecting them, the children and the property. If a woman wants to keep the sword and have a family, she must find a wife." Svalin smiled. "Mine mother married Halbjorn's mother because she didst not want to give up the sword for a family."

"Aye, mine mother sees to the home, and didst much of the raising of all four of us, until I wast five, and the girls until they wert ready to make their own choices."

Vernique listens, and nods, and makes mental notes clarifying the parts she already knew, and...then blinks.
"Until you were five? Bear-sark school starts at five? Sorry, but isn't that awfully young?"

"Nay. If a child knows what they want to do, they start training early as possible. I started at five as well. Asleif started her studies at five. Aridis ist the one who took a little longer to start. Mine twin canst be a bit flighty."

He shakes his head. "Not so early... the bear-sark art not trained to be such. They art taken to the berserker lodge as soon as there canst no longer be question. Our mothers wert despairing of e'er finding peace... or couches, walls, chairs in one piece... I lost all taste for sweets, and less and less stilled mine fits. The lodge wast the best place for me. But our mothers looked in on me oft enow. But twas far more durable, and with suitable training... and many things to let the children expend their energy and violence upon there. For there ist no cure for the madness, e'en wert one wished. Svalin, howe'er, wast a choice, though she wast allowed to change her mind until only recently, had she wished it so."

"Aye, mine own wast found most easily. Tis the way of the madness - one's life becomes much simpler." he replies, cheerily enough despite the nature of the statement. "But all our kind hath their fates written for them."

Vernique manages a smile again, but there's a slightly strange look to it. It's a funny thing, to reflect on the fact that people you know are going forth in their lives to the choreography of tragic poetry.

She's still just as impressed with Halbjorn's joie de vivre and eagerness to 'give it all away for free' as she was when they first met -- and with Svalin's much different but equally dutiful air, for that matter -- but when one really thought about it all... it was all really a lot to think about.

"Well, here's hoping there's plenty of time," she mutters with what can only be called a polite wistfulness

Halbjorn pauses, still having Vernique's arm. He turns, brushing her hair back and kissing her, for the moment, just on the forehead.
"Fair one, we hath today. I hath fine company, the best sister I couldst e'er dream to hath, and the pleasure of knowing what must be one of the loveliest women Midgard hast e'er beheld. And if tomorrow I die, then it shalt be with a smile on mine face and no regrets. For then, I wilt hath had today, and it wilt hath been time enow to be so blessed."

She's listening to Svalin and nodding, understanding the perspective as best she can, with almost an aesthetic appreciation of it, at least, and then Halbjorn stops, does that, and says that. And looking at him for a moment, she smiles a lot more brightly and says "I really do like the way you think."

They were..headed somewhere, weren't they?

He smiles at his sister, taking Vernique's arm again and falling back into step. "Of course, and it hast been far too long since I hath eaten proper food. And the Empress wast woefully without mead. Lead on then."

Svalin stayed quiet. The whole thing still left a bitter taste in her mouth. She hated what she had to do to her brother. It did not sit well and she was having a time coming to terms with it.
