Chicago After Hours (open)
Gregory Price slipped out of the Kingston Mines club and out into the mostly empty streets of Chicago. The night air was crisp as it tended to be during the early spring. The wind blew, which is Chicago was totally not a surprise, and Greg wrapped the trench coat he normally wore around him.

He bowed his head and started walking back toward his apartment.

The hairs on the back of his neck stood up and he stopped walking. Something was not right. Greg looked around, but didn't see anything or anyone. He didn't like the feeling of this.

He shoved his hands in his pockets and started walking again.

She was starving. Had been starving for days now. She'd had problems before (like when she'd suddenly become damn near deathly allergic to sunlight several years ago), and other weird little bits of health problems, but nothing like this before.

And food? Didn't taste right anymore. She could barely swallow it, and when she did, she ended up puking it right back up. It was as though it wasn't meant for her any more.

And then had come the fangs and it had become increasingly obvious what had happened to her. And now she was starving.

She'd managed to catch rats, or a few stray cats and dogs, and those had done something to blunt the hunger for a time, but it always returned. She needed more. She needed... human... blood.

She wouldn't. She couldn't. Could she?

What about that guy? Walking there? She pressed herself against the wall of the alley, out of sight. Look at him. Surely... no one would miss him? Or... or she would stop herself, before she went to far. She would...

A shiver chased down his spine. He could almost sense someone, something, was lurking in the dark. It wasn't too unusual for Greg. There were bad things out there in the dark and he was one of them.

He kept walking, a little slower than before, and let whatever it was come to him. They'd be in for a nasty surprise if they decided to mess with him.

God, she didn't want to do this. She really didn't want to do this. But... but she didn't have any choice.

She rushed him, trying to knock him down. She'd make it quick, she promised herself, not drink much... just a little... just a little to live...

He heard the hurried footsteps and spun around right as she hit him. He staggered backward a few steps, but as he did so his shape started to change. His form grew in size to about eight and a half feet tall and fur covered his body.

A snarl escaped the werewolf and he eyed his attacker.

Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit!

"Oh... God..." Michelle muttered. "Please... don't kill me..."

The werewolf paused a moment and then shifted back to human form. Greg stood there in a pair of black spandex shorts. Dammit. Another set of clothes ruined for no good reason.

"You attacked me," he pointed out as he picked up the trench coat he had discarded before transforming. "Perhaps I should be telling you to not kill me."

She backed up against the wall, just in case he did that again. "I... I'm sorry," she tried, tears rolling down her cheeks. "I'm sorry. I'm just... I... I'm just hungry. I can't...can't keep fighting it."

"I'm not going to hurt you," he assured her. He knew she wasn't quite human. He could tell as much when he was in his werewolf form and smelled something not quite right about her. "What do you need to eat? Let me help you get it."

Michelle's mouth parted enough to reveal fangs as she spoke. "Can't help..." she said, quietly. "Need... blood."

She wasn't a full vampire. He knew that much. She didn't smell like a grave. So she had to be..."Part vampire? Or are we going with something else?" he asked.

She shook her head. "Dunno," she replied. "Just... know I need it. Tried rats, cats, dogs... but hungry..."

"Right," he said with a sigh. "There's a group of drug dealers who operate a few blocks from here. I can give you an address." Greg went out of his way to not hurt innocents, but he wouldn't be sorry to see some bad people disappear. Especially ones who sold poison to kids.

The thought repelled her, just as much as the thought of feeding upon him had. But...

"Where is it?"

"Five blocks over. It's a five story brick building with all the windows boarded up. There's usually one or two of them hanging around outside. Not hard to miss."

Was this what her life was to become? One murder after another, just to sustain herself?

"...Thank-you," she said, after a moment.

Greg looked at her. Dammit. He didn't want to get involved with anything that could bring attention down on him, but the girl looked desperate and he didn't want to see her get hurt because he could be sending her into a lion's den.

"I'll go with you," he said. Hopefully they could avoid too much attention when this was over.

In some strange way, Michelle could tell that this guy was almost as desperate and pitiable as she'd become.

She nodded slightly. "Thank-you," she said again.

"It /could/ be. If you mother is a normal human, then yeah, it really could be related to your father."

He pulled out a cigarette.

"A lot of things are genetic and carry on through family lines." His own curse had been passed through to him and his siblings from their mother.

Greg felt sorry for the girl. He had lived with his curse since an early age and the bad stuff that came with it. He lit his cigarette and took a long drag.

"What did you do before now? Or did the hunger just start?"

Greg took a long drag off of his cigarette. The poor girl. "Look, I'm going to help you out." That streak of wanting to help those in trouble got the better of him.

"When we get there stay outside. I'll take care of the people in the building and I'll bring one out for you. Do you need him or her alive and the heart still beating, or will dead do?"

"Dead should still be okay," she said. She'd killed some of the animals first, to stop the squirming and screams. They still haunted her sometimes.

The hunger for blood, human blood still gnawed at her.

What had she done to deserve this?

Greg nodded and dropped his cigarette on the ground. He ground it out with the heel of his foot. It hurt, but he'd heal it.

He removed his trench coat and handed it to her. "Hold this. I don't want to get anything on it. It's my favorite."

Then he started walking toward a specific building. He disappeared inside. A moment later gunshots broke the relative quiet and screams soon followed.

Eventually Greg, who was covered in blood and sporting a few wounds from being shot, came out of the building with a man tossed over his shoulder. The man was barely alive and would be dead in a few moments.

Greg dropped the body on the ground at Michelle's feet.

He took his coat from her and pulled out his pack of cigarettes.

She almost couldn't control herself. When the body hit the ground, she was already upon it, fangs sinking into its neck and blood, precious blood, flowing freely for her to drink.

It took less time than she would have suspected to drain him dry. But it had left her feeling oddly... satisfied, the hunger at last pushed back.

Blood still stained her lips when she pulled away. She looked down at the body, then down at herself, and back again. "I..." Michelle started to say, then realized she had no good way to finish that sentence.

Greg politely turned away while she fed. He knew what it was like to have a side you didn't want people to see.

He pulled on his coat and smoked his cigarette while she fed. Occasionally he looked over his shoulder to check on the progress and when it appeared she was done, he turned back around.

"I know. Come on. The cops will be showing up soon and we don't want to be anywhere near here." Then something struck him. "You got a place to stay?"

"It's not something to look forward to, but you have to do what you have to do to survive." Greg took one last draw on his cigarette and dropped it on the ground. He grimaced as he smashed it out with a bare heel.
