The Beginning of the End of the Beginning of the End
The room is lit by flickering candlelight. A young woman, bound and gagged, lies on the table, struggling against her restraints. She's still wearing the clothes she wore when she was taken from the street, a short purple miniskirt, a tight shirt offering ample cleavage, and knee-high boots. Around her, men and women wearing black hooded robes chant in profane Latin. Outside the central circle, several cultists writhe and moan together, as pleasures of the flesh mingle with terror, horror, and blood: all that is life. Pleasure and pain, intermingling.

"Dark Lord Satan... hear our prayer," one hooded man declares, stepping up to the altar and looming over the bound woman. "We make this offering in service of you... and of your most powerful servant on Earth."

He raises a dagger. The girl's eyes flash in terror. "This offering will be sanctified in blood and flesh."

He plunges the dagger down towards her chest, and the woman tries to scream through her gag. But he stops, inches from her chest.

He looks at her, seeing the sweat, seeing her blood flow. Perfect. He hands the dagger to one hooded figure by his side, and another hands him a strange device -- two tubes connected to two small piercing needles. Her heightened pulse will make this work all the easier.

He stabs her in the neck with the needles, and the tubes begin to fill with blood, pumping her vital fluids elsewhere.

"May her blood sate your hunger, Lord, until you bring your servant back to us. Let our offering to you be received with glory."

It takes some time for the two needles to drain enough blood to be missed, even with a powerful pump providing a fair amount of suction. Still, after several minutes, the woman loses consciousness... and some time later, she stops breathing.

Thirty minutes after her death, a black car pulls up to an alley near the street corner where the woman once worked. Two men get out of the car, open the trunk, and drop the woman out in the alley. A homeless woman, hidden among blankets and refuse, eyes them carefully, but is certain not to reveal herself -- she doesn't want any trouble.

She will not be missed. Police never investigate dead women of her profession, not with any real effort. She's a case that is never solved, particularly with the cult's contacts on the police force.

But others will notice. Others will investigate...

Lynch had only been working with the Chicago police department for a couple days and was still in the process of getting their version of special investigations set up. When they told her that she would be doing this from scratch they met it and things have been hectic for the newest Lieutenant of the CPD. While she was a bit upset about how the SI was going to once again be the dumping ground for politically black listed cops again but at least she had power now and could get information to the good cops that could help and she could make sure that cops at least in her division be better prepared than most for the supernatural threats.

Karen was taking a break to look over old weird case files from the black cat files that had dealt with the weird that she was now going to be dealing with. She had found a weird series of killings all homeless people who were drained of blood but no investigations had occurred, no one had even tried it was like these files where put away and suppose to be lost forever. Now Lynch was going to get herself involved though when she had requested access to any evidence for the cases all of it had seemingly been misplaced or lost. While she couldn’t put her finger on why she could tell it seemed like someone didn’t want these crimes solved and it even seemed like someone was covering up to ensure that they could not be solved.

Lynch knew that the only way she was going to find anything out was if she could get to one of the crime scenes if not first at least early enough to make sure no evidence was lost. So she had her police scanner on listening for anything that might be one of those crimes while she continued to work late into the night.

Very late into the night a call had come in and a dispatcher was request an office to check out a possible strange homicide. Karen immediately got on her radio and said she would check it out. Then she rushed out and grabbed one of the police motorcycles she had requisitioned for herself. While she hoped her theory about what was going on was wrong she when there packing heat with her handgun loaded with her homemade wooden bullets.

When she got to the crime scene Lynch was surprised to see two people already there and they didn’t look like cops to her.

"And probably not the last. Hi, Vinny. Didn't realize you were in the Windy City."

Shelly stood up and pulled the exam gloves she was wearing off, carefully tucking them into a pocket of her bag.

"The police aren't going to touch this, or the others. The media is going to mention this, but only to stir up fear. Between the two, we're going to have more than a crime here. We're going to have an injustice and a larger problem. The marks on her throat are needle marks but the bruises--or what SHOULD be bruises--tell me it was an extraction and not an injection and with some force to boot. Who do you know that would mechanically drain a body?"

The sounds of another person caused her to turn her head.

"Well. Perhaps I stand corrected and the police will bother to check this out."

Vinny just makes a kissy face for Shelly, before he raised his fingers to his lips and took another long drag from his smoke. The chick cop was blinked at, though it was probably obfuscated by his big bug-like sunglasses.

"This ain't the only chick I seen killed like this." he then said, his tone insistent. "I've seen this in several cities that I've been in. There's a group of freaking maniacs who are huntin' me who have been leaving a lot of bloodless chicks all over the place."

Lynch slow made her way over towards the two figures she had her hand on her gun drawn but not raised yet. Once she got close enough to tell it was a man and a woman, she announced, “Chicago Police Department, don’t move.” For a 5 foot tall woman who looked almost like a cheerleader there was something intimidating about her. While she had caught a little of what they had been talking about it wasn’t enough to make sense.

Shelly very calmly stood the rest of the way up and held her hands in a non-threatening position.

"Dr. Shelly Drumm. I'm a liason to the coroner's office. If you'll permit me to get into my bag I can retrieve my ID. This is my...friend Vinny and this woman appears to have been ritually drained of her blood which goes in with what Vinny is on about--she's not the first blood-drained woman we've seen." She tilted her head. "But this is the first time the fuzz has shown up."

"Why do they always gotta pull guns?" lamented Vinny as he just kept smoking his cigarette like there was nothing wrong at all in the world. "Piece of advice, sweeite - there are bigger an' badder things that go bump in the night. That gun ain't gonna keep them from hurting you."

With that, Vinny threw his cigarette down and ground it out with the toe of a steel toed boot. He then stepped out of the shadows, though they still seemed to cling to him, tendril fingers of darkness reaching out to grasp at his clothing and hair.

Vinny gave a too-sharp smile, letting the length of one of his canines show in his smirking smile. "We got a group of people that I suspect have a vampire with them - believe it or not. They seem to think I'd make a good snack for the mothersucker."

“Maybe but I find that a wooden bullet to the heart typically take a vam down long enough to cut its head off,” Lynch said matter of factly, while she didn’t consider herself an expert or anything close to one she knew how to kill the more common of the things that goes bump in the night. She could tell that there was something not quite human about him and she made some mental notes on what she saw so she could talk to Walker about it later but for now at least he did not seem to be a threat to her and the woman did not seem threatening either. As far as she could tell they were all here for the same reason but that did not mean she trusted them.

“Sure you can show me your ID, Dr. Drumm and it’s nice to see I’m not the only one in town to have seen this pattern, it seemed like it was invisible to everyone back at the department.”

"Guns are a useful part of the law enforcement experience, Vinny. Not everyone fights with spells and shadows." Shelly shot Vinny a look and then reached into her bag, procuring the aforementioned ID and handed it to Karen. Sure enough it identified her as exactly who she said she was, Dr. Shelly Drumm, D.O., liason to the Chicago coroner's office.

"Admittedly this is the first fully drained body I've seen here, but I've heard of the others. I've just returned from Haiti this week. Family business. But the cops around here do love to look over the things that go bump in the night. This one...she was mechanically drained. These are needle marks. And I'm willing to bet my life that black magic was involved. Her body is making my hands twitch."

“Shit magic again,” Lynch said under her breath. Karen knew less about magic than she did about supernatural creatures. She knew it could be very dangerous and only knew a few tricks to deal with it and those would only work on simple magic or an unskilled practitioner like that Mayan possessed guy she fought not too long ago.

“Well I think that’s going to change, the CPD brought me here to set up a new division specifically to deal with the weird that seems to be on the raise here.”

He steps into the alley, looking at the three individuals around the body. The runes on the oaken staff glow as he moves forward, bringing greater light to the darkness around them.

"Good evening, Lieutenant Lynch. Fancy meeting you here. New York put you on loan?" he asks, keeping an eye on the two people he doesn't know, but not acknowledging them.

"Do we have any witnesses?" Matt asks her.

"Potentially. The young man who brought this to my attention may know something. It will require some finesse on my part." Shelly put away the ID that she had shown Karen and extended a hand to the man who had just shown up on the scene.

"Dr. Shelly Drumm. As I was telling Vinny and Lieutenant Lynch here, this woman has been mechanically drained of all her blood. There is also an element of black magic in play, unfortunately."

"Doctor." Matt says nodding, but does not shake the offered hand. He listens to what she has to say, and lets his mind work. He immediately scans the alley walls for any trace of the symbols that would indicate the presence of the Denarians. He's chased one here to Chicago, after helping destroy one out West.

If the one he battled came here, this city is in deep crap.

He looks at Lynch. "Hey, I dealt with something similar to this out West a few days ago...and one of the perps got away. Could have come here. I may have a lead on this for you, but I need a little more time to see if it's solid." he tells her.

Matt's appearance all at one set Vinny on edge. The dark headed and tatooed man simply scowled, and then went to draw in towards himself a bit. The shadows all around him noticeably grow darker and more.. thick. They seem to ooze more than gloat, and cling to him like tar.

He still says nothing though, simply watching and listening.

“Actually I got a new job out here setting up Chicago’s own version of the SI,” Lynch explains, “And if it helps you out at all this isn’t the first attack there have been a couple more before this.” Karen was going to have to find out what he was doing here since this was typically out of his normal working area but those kinds of questions could wait till later. She would also have to tell him about that Mayan thing and that crazy guy who thought he was a sparkly vampire.

Shelly turned her attention back to the body, putting on fresh exam gloves, shining a small penlight to more closely examine the body.

"I think perhaps we should take this body somewhere other than the morgue." She looked up at Lynch. "The morgue doesn't have capability to withstand some of the magic that may be useful in figuring out more of what happened to her. This is inky. I'm going to need to do some summoning."

Matt's eyebrows raise in Shelly's direction as she mentions that she'll need to do some summoning "Depends on what you're summoning, Doctor. A lot of things can be dealt with just fine in the morgue, but if you're looking at a heavy hitter from the Otherside, maybe you don't want to do that so quickly." he says.

Another practitioner doesn't bother him, provided that she's not one of the bad guys. He'll need to get some more info on Dr. Drumm as soon as possible, just to be on the safe side.

He turns to Lynch. "Well, the thing I was chasing didn't operate quite like this, but I can't rule out that they're not parts of the same whole until I get more info. Maybe Doctor Drumm is right for the moment." he says.

"I know someone." pipes up Vinny. He steps forward, leaving the shadows making grabby wriggles at him as he separates himself from them. "He's just who we need for this task; at least.. autopsies with.. summoning whatever."

Vinny is already dialing his phone, calling a certain mad scientist's number.

There's a crashing sound before Gene answers. "Same place as always. And it better be more interesting than the last one," he says. There's a pause. "Just make sure no one brings any soda. Trust me," he adds.

"HAVE AT THEE, VILE MACHINE!" is heard before the phone is hung up.

“We being new here I don’t have a large amount of pull or connections but I’ll see what I can do about turning the body over to your custody,” Lynch said, “But first I’m going to have to call this in.”

“After I finish with official procedure I’m going to see what conventional detective work can do and see if there are only patterns I missed.” In addition to that she was going to do some research on all of the people here that she could, while they didn’t seem like they were the bad guys she didn’t trust them either.
