The Beginning of the End of the Beginning of the End
The room is lit by flickering candlelight. A young woman, bound and gagged, lies on the table, struggling against her restraints. She's still wearing the clothes she wore when she was taken from the street, a short purple miniskirt, a tight shirt offering ample cleavage, and knee-high boots. Around her, men and women wearing black hooded robes chant in profane Latin. Outside the central circle, several cultists writhe and moan together, as pleasures of the flesh mingle with terror, horror, and blood: all that is life. Pleasure and pain, intermingling.

"Dark Lord Satan... hear our prayer," one hooded man declares, stepping up to the altar and looming over the bound woman. "We make this offering in service of you... and of your most powerful servant on Earth."

He raises a dagger. The girl's eyes flash in terror. "This offering will be sanctified in blood and flesh."

He plunges the dagger down towards her chest, and the woman tries to scream through her gag. But he stops, inches from her chest.

He looks at her, seeing the sweat, seeing her blood flow. Perfect. He hands the dagger to one hooded figure by his side, and another hands him a strange device -- two tubes connected to two small piercing needles. Her heightened pulse will make this work all the easier.

He stabs her in the neck with the needles, and the tubes begin to fill with blood, pumping her vital fluids elsewhere.

"May her blood sate your hunger, Lord, until you bring your servant back to us. Let our offering to you be received with glory."

It takes some time for the two needles to drain enough blood to be missed, even with a powerful pump providing a fair amount of suction. Still, after several minutes, the woman loses consciousness... and some time later, she stops breathing.

Thirty minutes after her death, a black car pulls up to an alley near the street corner where the woman once worked. Two men get out of the car, open the trunk, and drop the woman out in the alley. A homeless woman, hidden among blankets and refuse, eyes them carefully, but is certain not to reveal herself -- she doesn't want any trouble.

She will not be missed. Police never investigate dead women of her profession, not with any real effort. She's a case that is never solved, particularly with the cult's contacts on the police force.

But others will notice. Others will investigate...

The sword caught the werewolf's arm and the thing howled in pain, but it wasn't enough to really slow him.

With his target down, he went for the ones near Michelle.

The cultists had apparently intended to take down just one vampire. With the addition of a werewolf and Vinny to the fight, it ends quickly.

When one last one is left standing, backing away from the various forces, he mutters something quietly.

Then he screams in pain, as do the other still-breathing cultists there. Each one burns with a fire seen only to those with sharp supernatural senses, and then collapse.

All eight of them are dead.

As all the surviving cult members fall down dead, Vinny just rolls his eyes and mutters "Damnit.."

Looking to Shelly, he holds a hand up to her for her to pause and stay back, before he then gathers the shadows around himself and comes forward, seeming to melt and glide more than walk.

"Hey man, we're friends." he says to the werewolf, with both hands held up in a peacekeeping palm out manner.

Michelle reached down and put both hands on the stake in her belly and with a cry of pain, pulled it out. The wound was, she could tell, actually starting to close, albeit slowly. She held a hand over it to keep the pressure on it.

"What... the hell... was that about?"

"I don't know for certain." Shelly nodded to Vinny and waited until it was safe to move again. "I was working with the items we retrieved off of an unfortunately murdered young woman and this," she holds up a small amulet of sorts similar to something one of the cultists was wearing, "reacted and lead me here." She eyed Michelle. "Let me guess...they were after you."

She'd let Vinny handle the werewolf.

Greg shifted from werewolf to human. Blood dripped from the wound in his arm, but he would see to it later.

Now in a pair of spandex shorts, he walked over to Michelle and put a hand on her shoulder. "Are you okay? Is it healing?" he asked. He would deal with the other two in a moment. They weren't a threat at the moment.

"They said something about a master," Michelle told Shelly. "I didn't know anything, so they tried to kill me."

She nodded to Greg, gingerly removing her hand from the wound. It wasn't quite closed, but the flow of blood had all but stopped. "Looks like it."

Vinny just raised a brow as he was dismissed by the werewolf. Ooookay. Shrugging, he simply went to go start checking out the van. While rifling through it, he found a laptop which was tucked under an arm. He would worry about it in a bit.

"I'm glad that we're all still in one piece." he said to everyone still standing. "But we got a bunch of corpses around us and the fuzz are probably going to show up soon. I know a safe place that we can go hide out for a while."

Michelle shook her head as she took everything in. "This is turning into one freaky town, even for Chicago."

The raised brow did not go unnoticed. Michelle's well-being was more important than the hurt feelings of some stranger. If the guy wanted that much attention he could get a dog.

Once Greg was satisfied Michelle would be okay, Greg gave her a small smile and a nod. "It is."

Now he turned to the man and woman. "Thanks for the assist." Though given a little time to actually fight, Greg could have taken care of the vampires. It wasn't the first time he got in a scrape with them and it wouldn't be the last. In his family one grew up with that kind of stuff happening.

"We best get going," he said to Michelle.

"Starting to turn into a freaky town? I think it's long been one and no one's caught the signs." She shook her head and then paused. The little amulet in her hand was starting to feel warm again and she wondered what it was signifying now. There were no more 'bad guys' to defeat...but there was a van. Her eyes narrowed and she went to the van.

"Maybe there are clues," she mused as she started poking around.

"I found this in there already," Vinny says to Shelly. He motions to the laptop in his hands, and then glances about as he says "We really gotta get going soon.. You wanna have a second look while I grab the car?"

At her no doubt positive answer, Vinny leaves Shelly and the others while he grabs the car from the next block over.

A second look, Shelly has learned, is always fruitful and true to her experience she finds a few more small items that will prove at least minimally useful: a robe of some sort, another amulet.

"Are you both going to be alright?" She asks the other two and when Vinny returns with the car, she addresses him as well. "Care to give me a lift back to the office?"

Presumably everyone will answer in the affirmative and it will be just another weird night in Chicago.

"I"ll be fine," Greg answered. "Just a scratch." One that will take awhile to heal since it seemed the sword was silver. Greg looked at Michelle.

Michelle's wound was still healing, but was almost finished up by now. "I want to see what's on that," she said. "I don't take well to being attacked."

Greg nodded. He would follow her lead. He didn't have much personal interest, but he would look after Michelle.
