"You don't have to be," Toni said, and she smiled just a little. "And I thought I was the one watching your back."
She wasn't exactly a creature of complacency herself, both of her parents were too progressive for that (not that her Dad hadn't done a good share of keeping things stable and the same for Anya's dad), but so much had gone on in so little time that it had been overwhelming. And besides, sometimes, being able to sit back and enjoy what was, was good.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I'm being selfish here, I know."
