In a darker area of Chicago, there's an apartment building that has seen better days. It's still livable but doesn't look nice at all. And it has one resident, the man that owns it. Gene Kalso, aka The Breaker. To the untrained eye the building is normal. But to those with the right abilities, the building has some pretty good mystic defenses. There are some security cameras cleverly hidden outside too.

He's in the lobby tonight, watching a TV and eating some pizza. The lobby is pretty nice and fixed up and the casually dressed Gene's got his feet propped up on the desk. A security camera overhead watches the door but Gene knows some of his contacts are coming and bringing him something interesting. Something about a body and a laptop. Gene wasn't paying attention to the phone call. But he's still waiting.

"Man, these Mythbusters losers are just jokes," Gene laughs as he takes a swig of the beer he's got with him.

"I'm not a fan of doing this," she said as she carefully removed the fabric of Matt's shirt from the wound and worked on cleaning the area to make it as sanitized as possible. "But every muscle in my body tells me this has a dark magic taint. White magic of any sort won't quite be able to touch this."

As she placed her hand on the hilt of the knife, she leaned down.

"I'm sorry, Matt. Bear with me."

Then, as she suddenly began chanting strange words, the very blade began to glow, the light growing more and more intense as the shadows around Shelly grew darker and cooler. She became darker and darker, the light more intense and just as everything grew to a white-hot intensity, Shelly yanked the blade out of Matt and threw it aside, safely out of anyone's way.

"Towel. NOW."

Matt groans as the knife is pulled out and while he's glad to have the knife gone, the pain is kicking is his ass.

And did just hear something about a demon?

Damnit.

As soon as she acquires a towel, Shelly begins to apply pressure to Matt's wound. There is remarkably little bleeding. It's another clue to her that the weapon was magically fortified and meant to do damage that way rather than physical harm, though there is plenty of that, too.

"Nothing major appears to have been struck. You're lucky, Matt." She carefully cleans the wound and then reaches into her own bag for a syringe. Anesthetic, for the stitches. But as she does that, she begins to chant a bit. A rich, deeply toned Haitian accent takes over her voice and anyone with any understanding of Voodoo will understand that she's contracting with the loa on Matt's behalf.

Essentially, she's putting herself up as collateral for the well-being of the man under her hands.

Matt will be really angry later, when he's coherent enough to understand what Shelley has done on his behalf. In someways, he might have preferred bleeding to death.

"Mr. Lucky. That's me. If it's not a knife in the back, it's a shiv in the gut. If it's not a shiv in the gut, it's barely surviving a fireball intended to incinerate me outright.

And if it's not any of the those...then I forgot to feed Whisper. Man, she's gonna be pissed." he groans, sitting up.

"Nyah...what's up, Doc?" Matt asks, offering a small smile, followed by a wince.

The loa were very stern when she offered herself as collateral and, though she wouldn't tell Matt this, she was going to be taking on a lot of damage for him any time he was attacked for the next long while. As he joked about the shiv and fireball, she smiled, albeit a little grimly. Yeah...that was going to hurt a lot. For her.

"Your four-legged beastie will just be glad you're alright now. I will take you home later so that I can change your dressing and I'll feed Whisper for you tonight if you'd like. For now though..." she finished bandaging his wound. "You'll be fine. I'll give you a prescription for antibiotics yet. Please, Matt. Take them?"

Shaking her head she turned her attention to the others. Clearly they'd found something of interest.

He decides to humor the doctor in this instance, as she doesn't know a few crucial things about him.

1. His home and dog are in New York.

2. The place he was staying suffered an "electrical problem" and burned down around the time he was attacked. He may or may not have had something to do with this.

3. He doesn't need antibiotics, as he'll probably be in decent shape in a few days.

But rather than tell her this, he simply grunts and goes to join the others.
