What If: If you liked it, then you should have put the ring on.
Kristoff Vernard, age 22, didn't leave his lab for a long time. He wasn't sure he could handle the humiliation.

"I'm so sorry," she had said. "It's not that I don't care for you, but I'm fairly sure I could never marry you."

The small bottle of Latverian brandy had been a birthday gift he'd been saving for a special occasion. It was empty now.

Vincent checked the clock once more to be certain. Yes, it was well within reason to interrupt his brother now, regardless of what Kristoff said about his presence being needed or not.

Bypassing the security panel entirely, he teleports past the door, brow furrowing as he quickly spots the empty bottle.

"Phral?"

"Vincent. I believe we've discussed the risks of teleportation in a lab environment." It barely qualifies as fretting. His voice is too blank, dead-sounding.

"And I would assume that you and Doctor Samson have discussed the risks of wallowing in self-pity and/or loathing." Vincent retorts, but there's very little edge to his voice.

He moves over to his brother and sits him up a bit straighter, looking him over. He starts with the simple things. "When was the last time you shaved, or truly slept?"

"It has been some years since I had the luxury of selfishness, little brother; can I not be afforded a little?"

Kristoff groans. "I have only been up for..." He checks the clock. "37 hours, Vincent. Well within the bounds of safety."

"No." The reply is crisp, as Vincent pulls his brother up. The strength he is capable of employing to do so being not inconsiderable.

"Your younger brother, who has been reliant upon your guidance and therefore your well-being, for the past several years and hopefully many more to come, is telling you to go shower and shave. If you won't rest, I'll at least have you refreshed before I try to reach your higher processes."

It's a somewhat roundabout way of grabbing Kristoff by his own sense of responsibility to others, but registering the concern of others for himself is hardly one of his strong suits.

"There are many reasons that is a flawed debate tactic," Kristoff mutters. "I will...discuss them sometime later." And he rises to go clean up.

"I have no doubt you will." Vincent says soothingly. He goes to make tea.

When Kristoff returns, he'll find a hot cup waiting for him, while his brother reads a familiar leather-bound book.

Kristoff, cleaner at any rate, returns, sits, and sips. Vincent's tea always somehow leans a little... American, but that's to be expected.

"Vincent, you are twelve years old."

"Most observant." Vincent responds.

"Kristoff, we have many talks about myself and what is not acceptable. Today we will talk about you." He sips his own tea. "I have tried to be considerate enough to completely leave you alone for a day and a half. Susan suggested as much."

He looks at his brother with concern. "I don't want to lose you to... you."

"Cassandra will never be mine," he says quietly. Then groans. "You will not lose me. I will be fine. And even were I not to be, it is not as if you need me much. When I was twel--" And he stops himself. "No, that way lies madness, particularly your assertion that you should be allowed to get involved in celestial wars."

"I am somewhat fond of madness. And celestial matters." Vincent cannot help but grin slightly.

It passes, and he speaks again. "And I do need you. Most of all right now I need you to believe that your value is not determined by Cassandra's estimation of you as a potential husband. Right now you are in no condition to estimate your worth."

He goes a bit quieter. "You are my brother, and a great hero and scientist, and a good man."

A shower may make a man more clean, but not more sober. "Yes, all those things, until one can get better."

Vincent curls up his face and smacks a palm down on the table.

"Stop being.. being.. STUPID!"

As observed, Vincent is twelve.

"Then answer me this, phral. Honestly," Kristoff says hoarsely. And he's about to ask. Ask if Vincent could look him in the eyes and claim that if his divine family came back for him at just that moment, the last four years would mean anything more than a memory. He knows it to be true; no matter how much Kristoff loves his brother, or how much occasional affection Vincent feels for him, he is, as everyone else ever was, merely making do with a fallback option.

But he looks at him, and softens. What good would it do, besides spreading the pain? "...Would my going to bed satisfy you? And get you to go to bed? You should not allow your sleep cycle to be disrupted."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"My sleep cycle can withstand far more deviation than yours, Kristoff." Vincent says crisply, getting up from the table and walking around to take Kristoff by the arm.

"But yes, let's put you to bed. Hopefully most of that alcohol is out of your system. That you need natural REM sleep so badly is what's keeping me from simply mesmerizing you and making you go to bed."

Says the twelve year old.

And just as he was pulling himself together, Kristoff's face tightens again. "Vincent, this does not qualify as an emergency situation. You do not get to violate people's minds."

Vincent sighs and rolls his eyes. "Of course, Kristoff. You've taught me better than that." He continues trying to move his brother towards rest.

Kristoff will insist at Vincent take the matter seriously, and that he had better get to bed himself. But he will rest.

Kristoff Vernard, very recently aged 28, despised clubs. They were full of people and loud modern music, two things happened to despise as a rule.

But it was his baby brother's eighteenth birthday, and he had promised to get out of the building.

Vincent is currently enjoying the atmosphere and a pleasant virgin cocktail. Asleif had given him the night to go spend with his brother, and Vincent had readily accepted.

"I'm glad you came out with me."

Kristoff manages a very small smile. "You are most certainly welcome, although I cannot imagine why. To say that I am not fun at parties is a gross understatement, phral."

"Indeed. But your company is valued nonetheless." There's a faint nod from Vincent as his focus seems to be briefly placed on the opposite side of the club. "Especially tonight."

He puts his drink down and turns to his brother. "It's no-one's business but your own if you don't wish to pursue another romantic relationship, there are enough happy spinsters and bachelors in the world, so I won't begrudge you that. However, there is no reason not to go out and attempt to cultivate one or more friendships with other adults. I'm sure in a city this diverse even YOU can find someone to hold an intelligent and civil conversation with."

He smiles as he raises his glass to have another sip. The smile of someone who has taken a matter into their own hands, and feels they have done so skillfully.

A woman, slightly older than Vincent, but not older than Kristoff, glides up, carrying a drink of her own and a somewhat bemused smile.

"Hello Lorena." Vincent smiles in return, as they exchange a friendly kiss on the cheek with one another. He then turns to Kristoff.

"Kristoff, allow me to introduce an acquaintance of mine. Lorena Northman. She's finishing her doctoral work in holistic medicine, and also minored in European literature in her undergraduate years."

"I had something of a yen for Balkan folklore." She admits sheepishly. "Hello."

Vincent smiles. "To the extent that I hope was fair divulging, I've told her about the difficulties you had in your previous relationship, and all parties are under no pressure to feel any romantic airs about this meeting." He goes back to his drink, leaving a folded bill under the glass once finished.

"If you'll excuse me, there are a number of beautiful young women to dance with and ultimately disappoint with the knowledge that they won't be returning home with me. The two of you can amuse one another."

Kristoff blinked.

"A pleasure to meet you, Ms. Northman," he says, half-bowing politely. "Holistic medicine? Real holistic medicine? Forgive me, I did not intend any insulting implications, but I'm sure you realize how often the term has been appropriated quac- Vincent--" It took a moment for Kristoff to realize how quickly his brother was waltzing off.

She laughs, pushing hair back over one ear. "He does that, doesn't he?"

She smiles at the questioning. "Don't let the lipstick and heels fool you, Doctor Vernard. I grew up with my parents treating my scrapes and bruises with salves from their own mortar and pestle. The curriculum for accreditation has been primarily from books, but I've invested in a great deal of self-study as well."

Lorena grins confidently as she sips her drink. "Drop me into any North American forest, and one or two European expanses, and I can identify anything poisonous and most likely anything suitable as a supplement until I can secure real food again."

Love Kristoff can do, in specific cases, and do wholeheartedly.
Contempt as well.
And awkward bafflement.
And professional respect.

He's not very good at anything else, so mild forms of the third and fourth will have to do for now.

"Ahem. Yes. And most impressive, Miss. So I am sure you are just as irritated by the misappropriation of the term by fad dieticians and such ...less useful individuals as I am. Good herbalists are so hard to find these days."

She shrugs, a light snort rising at the back of her throat. "The great irony is in that I have better prospects developing a line of pet foods than herbal treatments. You're more right than you know about the misappropriation."

She downs the rest of her drink, letting out a sharp sigh. "If I hear one more informercial pundit go on about the 'miraculous' power of acai..."

Lorena gasps lightly and lays a hand to her chest. "Why Doctor Vernard, are you suggesting imposing expectations of common sense on our economy? I'm not sure the Western world is ready for such radical thinking."
