What If: If you liked it, then you should have put the ring on.
Kristoff Vernard, age 22, didn't leave his lab for a long time. He wasn't sure he could handle the humiliation.

"I'm so sorry," she had said. "It's not that I don't care for you, but I'm fairly sure I could never marry you."

The small bottle of Latverian brandy had been a birthday gift he'd been saving for a special occasion. It was empty now.

Kristoff Vernard, very recently aged 28, despised clubs. They were full of people and loud modern music, two things happened to despise as a rule.

But it was his baby brother's eighteenth birthday, and he had promised to get out of the building.

Vincent is currently enjoying the atmosphere and a pleasant virgin cocktail. Asleif had given him the night to go spend with his brother, and Vincent had readily accepted.

"I'm glad you came out with me."

Kristoff manages a very small smile. "You are most certainly welcome, although I cannot imagine why. To say that I am not fun at parties is a gross understatement, phral."

"Indeed. But your company is valued nonetheless." There's a faint nod from Vincent as his focus seems to be briefly placed on the opposite side of the club. "Especially tonight."

He puts his drink down and turns to his brother. "It's no-one's business but your own if you don't wish to pursue another romantic relationship, there are enough happy spinsters and bachelors in the world, so I won't begrudge you that. However, there is no reason not to go out and attempt to cultivate one or more friendships with other adults. I'm sure in a city this diverse even YOU can find someone to hold an intelligent and civil conversation with."

He smiles as he raises his glass to have another sip. The smile of someone who has taken a matter into their own hands, and feels they have done so skillfully.

"I suppose it is conceivable, but the odds in this particular locale..." Kristoff blinks a little. He knows that look.

A woman, slightly older than Vincent, but not older than Kristoff, glides up, carrying a drink of her own and a somewhat bemused smile.

"Hello Lorena." Vincent smiles in return, as they exchange a friendly kiss on the cheek with one another. He then turns to Kristoff.

"Kristoff, allow me to introduce an acquaintance of mine. Lorena Northman. She's finishing her doctoral work in holistic medicine, and also minored in European literature in her undergraduate years."

"I had something of a yen for Balkan folklore." She admits sheepishly. "Hello."

Vincent smiles. "To the extent that I hope was fair divulging, I've told her about the difficulties you had in your previous relationship, and all parties are under no pressure to feel any romantic airs about this meeting." He goes back to his drink, leaving a folded bill under the glass once finished.

"If you'll excuse me, there are a number of beautiful young women to dance with and ultimately disappoint with the knowledge that they won't be returning home with me. The two of you can amuse one another."

Kristoff blinked.

"A pleasure to meet you, Ms. Northman," he says, half-bowing politely. "Holistic medicine? Real holistic medicine? Forgive me, I did not intend any insulting implications, but I'm sure you realize how often the term has been appropriated quac- Vincent--" It took a moment for Kristoff to realize how quickly his brother was waltzing off.

She laughs, pushing hair back over one ear. "He does that, doesn't he?"

She smiles at the questioning. "Don't let the lipstick and heels fool you, Doctor Vernard. I grew up with my parents treating my scrapes and bruises with salves from their own mortar and pestle. The curriculum for accreditation has been primarily from books, but I've invested in a great deal of self-study as well."

Lorena grins confidently as she sips her drink. "Drop me into any North American forest, and one or two European expanses, and I can identify anything poisonous and most likely anything suitable as a supplement until I can secure real food again."

Love Kristoff can do, in specific cases, and do wholeheartedly.
Contempt as well.
And awkward bafflement.
And professional respect.

He's not very good at anything else, so mild forms of the third and fourth will have to do for now.

"Ahem. Yes. And most impressive, Miss. So I am sure you are just as irritated by the misappropriation of the term by fad dieticians and such ...less useful individuals as I am. Good herbalists are so hard to find these days."

She shrugs, a light snort rising at the back of her throat. "The great irony is in that I have better prospects developing a line of pet foods than herbal treatments. You're more right than you know about the misappropriation."

She downs the rest of her drink, letting out a sharp sigh. "If I hear one more informercial pundit go on about the 'miraculous' power of acai..."

Kristoff groaned agreeably. "Normally, I find your American principles of free speech nice enough, but some things border on justifiable homicide."

Lorena gasps lightly and lays a hand to her chest. "Why Doctor Vernard, are you suggesting imposing expectations of common sense on our economy? I'm not sure the Western world is ready for such radical thinking."
