Dinner Time
It was barbecue night again at the school, and Joey was very quick to remind his girlfriend of their date. Granted, she was still a little grumpy from the whole thing in Fargo (and he didn't blame her), but she was okay. He didn't want to ask how much that hurt, but he also wondered if there was any lasting trauma or pain for her since everything was growing back. She complained about being itchy, which made Joey wince a little at times.

He should have been watching her better.

He asked Rose to meet him out on the porch, and waited for her with a table and food for the both of them, along with a couple of sodas. Even now, months after their first meeting in this place, he was still nervous about a date with her. Rose wasn't especially girly, but Joey liked that about her. They could talk about beer and fighting and it was as easy as any fake conversation about stuff that neither of them were interested in.

When she's close by, Joey snaps his fingers and lights the candle on the table between them.

Who says he can't be just a little romantic sometimes?

"For just about forever. Been watchin' her dad and my mom since they were kids. Cloned my Mom once, had her hook up with Summers so they'd make the next mutant messiah or some kinda crap. And then it gets more nuts."

Not that Nate wasn't crazy awesome, but it was part of the whole mess.

"Was still plenty interested in Annie too. Me, not so much. Least, not in any good kinda way. Claims my dad's genes are 'corruptin' a noble bloodline' or some garbage."

She let out a breath, grateful for the shift in conversation.

"Not that different than here, really," she said. "'cept most of the parent-types ended up with different people. Same kinda intolerance, same kinda fightin' for a world that hates and fears us. Though the school ain't a secret the way it is here. ...Oh, and Carrie Underwood didn't win American Idol."

Joey just blinked as Rose explained. "That's...that's nuts. What kind of psycho does that to people?"

Joey realizes he's just asked a rhetorical question; probably the rhetorical question of the year. Suddenly, it clicked in Joey's head why the Nasty Boys had come to the Sushi restaurant after them. They'd wanted Rose.

And Sinister had already had Cassidy and several others. Joey filed the information away for later; he needed to do some digging.

"Well, I don't think Carrie Underwood should have won that year. Chris Daughtry totally blew her out of the water, in my opinion." he says.

"Would you go back home if you could?" he asks.

It did raise the question of just who or what Cassidy was.

"See, bub? This is why you're great. Well, taste in music's up there, anyway."

The other question, however, hit her hard. It was direct, which she appreciated. And, she would be forced to admit, she deserved an answer.

She frowned, looked down. "I... dunno, Joey. I miss my friends, an' my mom and dad... not that the Logan here ain't been nothin' but great to me. But I'm startin' to build somethin' here too. And..."

Words. You know them, kiddo. Use them.

"And home ain't got you."

Joey smiled at her last words. In his life, everyone he'd given a damn about had left him behind. His dad, mom, and Aunt Jenna first, then the Vanishers and Foxx. He'd learned a long time ago not to get attached to anyone or anything, because they'd probably be gone as soon as they realized he wasn't a good person.

Yet...Rose was still here.

"I had a lot of time to think on the plane, watchin' your hair grow back. I didn't come here with pure intentions, Rose. I was just here to get info from Xavier on my mom and then I was supposed to be gone. A week or two, tops. But then I meet you and...my whole plan went down the toilet. I stopped caring about the info on my mom when we started spendin' time together. I made a friend here and there." Joey says, turning over the thoughts in his mind and shifting in his chair.

"Then we all nearly got eaten by a damn island, but we lived. And I kept fallin' for you. Then...I watched you get blown to hell and back and I realized in that moment that, if you couldn't heal, we wouldn't be having this talk right now.

And I thought of all the stuff I could have said, that I should say, and all the stuff we still haven't done. Sushi. Camping. Rock Band. Road trips." Joey smiles, fidgeting a little.

"Rose, I've never felt about anyone the way I feel about you. That's no line. It's true. And if you do someday get to go back where you came from, then I'm coming with you, because I'm not staying in a world that doesn't have you in it." he finishes.

Rose let Joey get through everything he had to say without interruption, unsuccessfully trying to keep her expression controlled. Dammit. What did she know about love? Her own birth had been the result of a simple giving in to suppressed, fiery passions, not the kind of life-long love that held a relationship, no matter how much she could tell her father still loved her mother.

And now somebody was telling that to her.

"I... I ain't so good with words, Joey. Not like that," she started, as she reached out to take his hand. "But I ain't never felt the way I feel about you before. And down in Fargo... I knew I'd live through that, but when I was pullin' myself out... I started thinkin' it wouldn't have been worth it if you didn't."

She gave his hand a squeeze. "And if you can't come... then I ain't going. Plain as that."

"Then we agree. You're stuck with me until you say otherwise, Miss Logan." Joey grins, holding her hands. He hasn't said those words yet, but that can wait. He already knows how he feels. Foxx would tell him he was pathetic for falling in love with Rose, but Joey doesn't care.

"Now, while this is good barbecue...I have this overwhelming urge to tell you how hot I think you are...in your room. I say we finish eating and then we don't talk about Fargo or Cassidy or anything else that isn't you and me for a long time.

What do you think?" he asks.

Rose is dang sure of her own feelings as well, even if she's not so good with actually saying them. She'd have to fix that. Dad had always said he'd regretting waiting so long to tell her Mom how he felt.

She giggled just a little bit. Not too much. She wasn't giggly, but she was happy.

"I say I look forward to hearing more."
