A Meeting of the Minds
Rok sat in the labratory of a man much more intelligent than he. Kristoff Vernard. Rok Lu pinched his brow and sighed.

"I am sorry, Vernard. I am just worried about these... spells of dissassociation and hallucination I seem to be experiencing. Do you have any ideas what they might be? Or do you think my fears may have become manifest?"

"There is nothing for which to apologize, Lu. The concerns are understandable. Signs of potential neurological damage -- even if just accelerated headaches and surreal episodes like this -- are nothing to dismiss lightly. Let us try to analyze the circumstances in which they were occurring, to begin with."

"Yes. First there was while moving in the new Thunderbolt home base and arranging my clothes. I had to lie down for roughly ten minutes. Then at the restaurant where we found Elise. Then again at the docks during the alien incident with SWORD. And occasionally while at the base itself, but for never more than a few minutes. I'm worried Vernard. EIther something is interfering with my own radioactive abilities, which is the preferable option, or I may be beginning to feel the degeneration I do not doubt my mother has already fallen to by now." Rok began to look sad. He cared little for his father, true, but he did love his mother, even knowning she was just a clone programmed to be a mother and wife. She still did a good job.

"There is, obviously, substantial evidence that clone degeneration can effect a second generation, but none that it is inevitable. There are many counterexamples. We will take some samples to analyze both for cellular stability and for radiation poisoning. I will consult whoever might be able to help, but only so far as you are wiling to have it be discussed. Fortunately, while I have not had much practice in related issues in a long time...Dr. Doom had much more biological expertise in his younger years than he is sometimes credited." Kristoff gives a small wry smile; Lu knows about his own neurological 'reprogramming' as a child.

Lu smiles back. "I do hope it is not radiation poisoning. I understand my mothers... twin, we shall say, had similar problems with her powers, correct?"

Kristoff nods. "She did, but there are plenty of options." He gets the medical equipment, swabs his substantially younger colleague's arm, and goes about getting the samples. "Please hold still."

"I don't like needles, Vernard. I request a lollipop for this." Rok is only half kidding. He really does want a lollipop. Sugar to calm his nerves.

Kristoff chuckles and gets some hard candy from the stash for Scotty and hands it to him before proceeding.

"Aside from these health concerns, how has the adjustment been?"

Sticking the candy in his mouth, and reveling in it's watermelon flavor, Rok sighs. "Well enough, I suppose. My new teammates seem nice enough, especially Victor and Miss Anya. And my room is all to myself and lead lined, like I asked. So there is that.

What's new with yourself? Any new papers?"

"I am glad to hear there is that much, at least. I recently finished writing up that little monograph on the effects of exposing nanotechnology to minute levels of many different combinations of radiation."

"Ah, I have been tinkering with a variation of that myself. I will have to read it and see what results you garnered." Rok winced a bit as the needle pierced his skin. "Hm... I do find it odd that I can take a punch to the face and a laser to the back easily, but a needle still causes more discomfort than either."

"I have gotten some fairly impressive results, particulary considering the level of advancement of the nanotechnology."
He's quick and efficient.
"No shame in it. You should see how nervous I get if I have to work with electrodes against my skin."

"I have a feeling that would be very entertaining to watch." Rok looks. "Are there any other samples you need, or is blood enough?" Rok asks, worried. "Father used to do spinal fluid tests on me as a child. That may explain my problem with needles."

Kristoff nods a little at that last analysis. "Blood will suffice. The methods I'm using need only that to demonstrate either radiation sickness illustrating an internal vulnerability akin to that of your 'aunt', or the other concern."

"I do hope it is simply an interference, a bad signal that makes me go wrong. We could build something to deal with that, couldn't we?"

"Indeed, it would be quite feasible."

Rok sighs in relief. "Thank you. I hope it is something that small. After all, even if it is... degeneration, they can make serums for that. So that would be feasible as well."

Rok then thinks and a look of abject terror hits his face.

"You do not think it could be diabetes, perhaps? Could you check my blood for that too?"

"There will be many options," Kristoff reassures.

"I can understand why that would worry you. You do not have the full range of symptoms that usually acompany diabetes. The more definitive tests for diabetes require having not eaten all day, but I can run a glycated hemoglobin test and if the results look troubling, wait to try the others or refer you to a physician."
