Giving It Another Shot
Torn Ear's whiskers twitch as he braces himself. He's fairly sure he's doing things correctly this time. Flowers instead of a fresh kill. He bathed himself*. He'd even decided to try out human clothing. The chosen one Pym girl had given him a pair of hide pants that would even fit his tail; leather she called it, if he remembers correctly. The four-armed human, Silvee, had given him a very pretty shirt too. It was a bit snug, but the color was nice and vivid. To top it all off, he'd even picked out a face with the illusion-maker that he found satisfactory.

He knocked at Red-fur Rachel's door.


*And for the record, 'bathing' himself involved water and scrubbing stones in one of those indoor giant white bowls the humans seemed to enjoy.

"On my own, you mean?" she asked, keeping the language imprecise. "Some. I'm still figuring out my limits."

He shrugs his shoulders. "Either way is what I was asking you."

He's then distracted as the server returns with their drinks. He looks at the dark bubbling liquid with intrigue as it's put before him.

Lifting the glass with both hands, he takes a sip cautiously. His eyes widen slightly as the carbonation hits his tongue, but he doesn't appear too alarmed. He takes a long drink, then puts it down, smacking his lips slightly.

"How do they make it do that?" He points at the bubbles on the surface of the liquid.

She mostly resisted the urge to laugh at his reaction. "It's carbonation. They, ah, put a gas into it, basically."

"It's... it's incredibly sweet. Like, sweeter than fruits. Only it's definitely not juice." He takes another sip.

He thinks over carefully how he wants to reply. "Both."

He takes another drink of his soda. "Humans are just too much of the world. We have to learn how to co-exist with them, or we'll die."

Torn Ear's gaze focuses on her. "You... you're special. Your smell tells me so."

He doesn't seem bothered, and certainly doesn't seem like he's going to call her out on avoiding it.

"We could probably stay underground forever, but we're changing, and so is the world. We need to learn to be able to live with humans, sooner or later. It's best if we can learn as much about you all as possible."

"Yeah, I wanted to ask you about that actually." His leg jolts for a moment, then he settles it again, before using his hand to scratch behind his ear.

Torn Ear leans forward and lowers his voice. "If your pride is trying to bring normal humans and your kind of humans closer together... why do you just wait in your den for bad things to happen?"
