Contact
Tessa hadn't heard from Misha in almost two weeks. She knew why he hadn't called, but she couldn't lose contact with him. The mission depended on her keeping in contact with him. Not to mention Nicholas had been nagging her about keeping in contact with Misha. The man was impatient as hell and a pain in the ass.

Not wanting to hear any more from Nicholas and being genuinely concerned about Misha, she dialed his number.

"You know, I haven't any idea." He set the knife down, washed his hands and went to the fridge. A printed schedule was held in place with magnets. "Next game is a week from Saturday. If everything goes all right, I'll be back at practices this week."

"I'll make sure I'm there." She smiled. "Are you sure I can't help with something?"

"I'm sure, I'm sure." He gave her a mock evil eye and took a carton of eggs, a block of cheese and the carton of cream from the fridge. "Relax. You'll love this, and you'll be happy to know my dad taught me to cook. My mother can hardly boil water without burning it."

"She's that bad?" Tessa asked.

"Hrm... how to answer that..." He began assembling the omelet mixture. "My mother can make coffee that'll crawl away and fend for itself in the wild, and one dish very well. She can make blinis. Anything else, appliances begin to smoke."

Tessa chuckled. "That's pretty bad. I take it she survives on takeout then? Though I'm kind of in the same boat. Not a very good cook, but I can chop and help prepare."

"Something like that. The worst part is my sister takes after her. She can't cook either."

"So it's genetic on the female chromosome?" she asked, totally joking.

"That's what we suspect," he said, smiling and not joking. "Or it could just be something about redheads."

She laughed. "Could be. I can't cook either. Know any other redheads to test it on?"

"I knew a redhead growing up that could cook, but she was a special case." It was the only way to describe Jean Grey.

He turned on a gas burner and set a pan on it. He added a half cube of butter to melt. "The cooking thing is overrated. Mom couldn't, but we never went hungry. Dad made sure I could because he wanted me to be self-sufficient. I learned, because it impresses the girls." He winked at her.

She smiled and finished the last of her beer. "Well as a girl, I say it works. I'm impressed."

He took a moment to reach for her empty bottle. "Want another beer?"

"Please. It's been a long day." It had been awhile since she had the chance to just kick back, have a beer or two while talking to someone.

"You got it, honey." Once he'd served her another beer, he went back to the heating pan. The omelet mixture was poured slowly into the melted butter. While it cooked, he got out a cheese grater and worked on the block of sharp cheddar.

"Registered for next semester yet?"

The honey sent a shiver down her spine. She nodded. "Yes. Taking a full course load. What about you? Register yet?"

"Oh yeah. They were happy to get me registered early. Not a full load, but I'll be busy."

When he decided the omelet cooked long enough, he removed it from the fire to finish. "School is the necessary evil."

"Thanks."

He took two plates from a cupboard. "I've never been the academic sort. I'm more hands on."

"It's not nearly as much fun, either."

He piled the cut vegetables and sliced meat on one side of the omelet and carefully folded the other side over to let everything heat through. Grated cheese was sprinkled on top to melt.

"People don't take you seriously until you finish something big."

"It's almost done. You can't rush the good stuff." He washed his hands again and leaned on the counter in front of her. His expression was all smirk. "Not if you want a fully satisfying experience."
