In which Kassia goes Nancy Pelosi on shit. (Marrina.)
If the Doombots were supposed to cause panic and mass chaos under the sea they failed, at least with the citizenry.  Certainly there was a good bit of noise and confusion, but no one ran screaming or jumped behind buildings for cover.  The Atlantean people had dealt with Lemurians for goodness sake.  A Doombot was cause for concern but not full on Nathan Lane-style drama.  No, that type of drama was reserved for the advisers inside the palace.  The first Doombot received notice and almost immediately there was great shouting and flailing and someone actually yelped that the sky was falling.  It woke Kassia from her half-nap and she, like everyone else in the inner sanctum, came running to the war room to find out what the King would do.

Except...there was no King.  Just a lot of nattering, worrying, and flailing.  It went on for about twenty minutes before Kassia realized that something was off.  "Um.  So where's the Army?"  She was told that only the crown could call the Army.  "So where's my Dad?"  No one had an answer. Kassia looked at each adviser in turn, then rolled her eyes. "Oh for fuck's sake...fine.  I'm the crown.  Until my sister can get here I'm the damn Queen.  You there in the...skirt-like toga with the ruffle thing...call the Army.  We're under attack, people!"

"Goddamn worthless advisers...gotta do everything my own damn self..."  Kassia shoved past palace staff and went straight for the throne room.  Her dad hat a triton in there somewhere.  She'd seen it.  Crowned heads wield cool stuff, right?  Once she found the triton, she grabbed it and then, as advisers yelled after her to seek refuge in the safe room Kassia charged for the door.

"The Fist of Atlantis doesn't cower in safe rooms when her people are under attack."

***

An hour later, while the Army was dispatching the bulk of the invading 'bots, Kassia stormed back into the palace, a little disheveled and a little scuffed up, and headed straight for the war room...dragging what appeared to be the mangled leg of one of the Doombots with her.  She heaved it up and slammed it down on the table.

"And THAT is how we deal with invaders.  Get my sister on the line.  NOW."

She may have well been Namor Jr.

The majority of the advisers are elderly Atlanteans, those who would often be just as content to stick their heads in the sand, and few of who had ever had to do much fighting in their life. Sufficed to say, Kassi's actions take them aback.

"At...at once, your highness!" one said, as they all scrambled to not be in the room with the very angry Fist.

It was very soon that the call from Marrina came in.

"Kassi? What's happening down there?"

"You all better be glad I'm busy!" She shouts after the advisers. Really, this was disgraceful and she was still annoyed when Marrina called.

"We've been attacked by Dr. Doom. Dad's missing, which means you're in charge...except you're not here right now so I may have hijacked your Army. And beaten the shit out of a Doombot." She peered out the door. "And made your advisers piss themselves."

"Father's missing?" Marrina asked, worry creeping in. That was not good.

"Okay, keep doing what you're doing. I'm officially putting you in charge of coordinating our defense. And I'll be there as soon as I can."

"Yeah, Dad's missing. I'm gonna skin a few advisers for this." She paused. "Hurry, Marrina. I need to get you caught up on a few things before we go find Dad."

"Tide's are just right at the moment. Use them to your advantage and come into the palace the back way. There're are a lot of Doombot carcasses I've got the Army clearing in the front. See you seen."

Kassia ended the call and then...waited.

In didn't take Marrina long to reach Atlantis (after first having promised the other Alphans that she would officially request Canadian aide if anything truly serious went down).

She made her way to the palace and was quickly escorted to Kassi.

"How bad was it?"

"Well, Dad's missing and our so-called advisers were willing to surrender us to Doom. THAT was bad. The actual invasion...not bad. I have part of a Doombot as a trophy, but I may have dented Dad's triton."

"I think he'll get over it," Marrina assured her. She rolled her eyes at the mention of the advisers. This was why the place got conquered by Atuma or Krang or Draconia or whoever every time Namor was out of town. No spine in the higher ups.

"This isn't just happening here," she told Kassi. "Other nations--other monarchies, I suppose--are being invaded too."

"Well that's just fucking fantastic. It's global invasion." Kassia started pacing a little. "We need to decide what we're going to do. Er, what you're going to do. You need to decide. So far, the people do not know Dad's missing and I"ve threatened to kill any adviser who says a word because I don't freaking want Draconia and her supporters trying to usurp you. We...you need to show a continuity in government and a strong reaction.

Getting a message to the surface that Atlantis has shit under control is probably a good idea, too. Not to mention activation of our full armed forces."

Marrina took a deep breath. "What we're going to do," she told her sister. "You understand politics. I'm from a fishing village and hadn't been more than fifty miles from there more than a handful of times in my life before a couple years ago."

She took in a deep breath and let it out. Namor had seemed such a constant, she'd never truly given much thought to the prospect of having to assume command.

"Okay, we'll put the military on full alert, call up all the ranks to active duty. And then I'll record a message that can be taken to the media."

"A recorded message is an indicator that there's trouble, Marrina. It shows you're too busy to speak live or to take questions." Kassia thought about this. "Technically, if my history's right, the Fist is something of a military adviser. I could speak."

Marrina shook her head. "You're right," she said, after she'd thought it over.

Damn it all. She needed to be more on top of things than this.

"That sounds like a plan then."

"And we don't reveal that Dad's missing. It will completely destabilize us. You speaking publicly would tip off right away that Dad's missing. We need to buy enough time to shore up our nation before saying, yes, we've gone to a continuity of government."

"Because I killed Sebastian Shaw." Kassia stood up and walked towards the door. "The bastard who took Dad is going to meet much the same fate if I have my way. No one messes with Atlantis."

Marrina's mouth fell open in surprise. Yes, she'd very nearly killed the Flying Fox... but that had also been...

She didn't know what it had been. Some kind of hormonal imbalance due to stress and her alien biology.

She tried to get herself to say something, but no words came out. This was a viciousness she just didn't have.

"I..." she tried.

"You'll do the job well," she eventually came up with.

"I will," she agreed. "Thanks."

She put on her most confident expression. "We'll get him back, Kassi. And if we can't..."

Dear Lord. What if they couldn't?

"If we can't... we bring them to justice."

Somehow, Marrina wasn't surprised. This new side of Kassi was, somewhat, surprising, but perhaps it had always been there underneath it all and she simply hadn't been worldly enough to see it.

More and more, she wondered if she had the stomach or spine for any of this.

"Agreed."

There is still a lot of panicking from the advisors wanting to know what the princesses are going to do, and a few polite inquiries from Atlantean citizens about what further action is to be taken.

Kassia had based herself out of the war room and she had already started building a strategy. This was all Marrina's job technically, but Kassia couldn't just abandon her sister to do this. They'd decided not to tell the world at large that Namor was missing but...

She was going to need to talk to Marrina again.

Marrina had spent much of her time meeting with people, collecting information and advice, which she then relayed back to Kassi. Who she was on her way to see right now.

"So outside of me talking to the surface media and us not revealing Dad's not here, what are we going to do exactly? Fishbowl helmeted army attack on Latveria? I think that's rash. I've been looking at our armed forces and...what in the fuck have the advisers been doing? The army is not well-prepared at all!"

[info]sea_shelly

She shook her head. "I think, generally, Father was the military solution to most problems. Plus the occasional summoned sea-creature. We've got a horn for that, by the way. It summons a giant whale. With arms and legs."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]little_mermaid
2010-10-12 04:09 am UTC (link)
"I...need this horn." A giant whale with arms and legs? She was naming him Stan. "Well. Then I guess we need to come up with a more comforting and comprehensive strategy because even massive man-whales aren't gonna cut it this time. I want to mobilize the Kassilines."

It was something that hadn't happened in centuries.

Marrina did not know nearly as much about the history of Atlantis as she probably should, but that was one name she did recognize from her studies.

"...You sure that's a good idea?"

"The Kassilines entire job is to protect Atlantis and the Royal family in times of crisis. Sure, Dad's been a one-man-army for a very long time but still. The people are worried. The surface wants to know our next move. This sends a powerful message and it's something Dad would do."

Marrina nodded. "Let's make it happen then," she said. She drew herself up to her full height, which she admitted, wasn't much.

"Let's show them what Atlantis is worth. Let's show them we've still got some fight."

"So. Who is doing the talking? I mean, I've got the surface media. Just waiting for CNN to call me back. But...as for our own people...and are we going to threaten war with the surface? I personally think that our best course of action is to try to initiate diplomatic talks with Latveria...and then send a secret stealth team in."

[info]sea_shelly
2010-10-12 11:04 pm UTC (link)
She frowned. "I think I may have too. The CNN thing is military enough... but this calls for the heir to the throne."
