Trying to Sort Things Out
Kristoff sent a message to SHIELD. Full Disclosure. Doom was not in Latveria, and the Doombot signals had apparently been hijacked.

Then he got to work trying to raise Atlantis on the communcations system. Even once a signal got through the general difficulties connections with Atlantis sometimes did, it was something of a wait for anyone of the techs on the other end to be willing to take a call coming from Doomstadt right now. Even then, it some work to get someone to take "Please put His Majesty or Her Highness through as soon as possible. No, this is not a trick, this is Kristoff Vernard of the Fantastic Four" seriously.

The hospital in Doomstadt was the only building in Latveria, other than the castle and Doom's various defensive systems, with electricity and state-of-the-art technology. Doom had long ago set it up, put most of its technical maintenance on automatic systems, and stopped worrying about anything so simple.

Now, after so much strain on the electrical systems of the city from one thing and another, the hospital had just broken down. No immediate fatalities to the patients from the malfunction, but the very idea of something going wrong without the Master or the Doombots to keep it under control or press the right button was even worse than an attempted invasion in terms of stirring unrest in the city.

And there could not be unrest in the city. Nothing that could lead to riots in the streets. Kristoff would not allow it. Been there. Done that. Got the lifetime of abandonment issues. So he was there immediately, instructing people into how to fix the problems and get everything back online.

Latveria didn't have much of a government hierarchy to speak of. The legal system Doom instituted didn't lend itself to much of one. But every city, however unusual and unmodernized, has a few administrative functionaries. And every community has a few people who like to throw their weight around when the cat's away and the bells are broken.

And a couple of them were getting in Kristoff's way. "The situation can be managed without Fantastic Four interference."
"By whom?" He snaps. "Gentlemen, you do not know how to work a flashlight."
And it turns out Kristoff was, in fact, not the only one on the planet who remembered a certain stinging issue. "Your presence here isn't even legal, Vernard. This isn't your home anymore."
He can't help it. The stern, authoritative expression yields to a wince.

There is a displacement of air and a puff of brimstone behind the naysayer. It wasn't the usual teleportation spell, but an impression had to be made.

A hand grips the back of his collar and hefts him a good foot off the floor. "Perhaps, but it is my kingdom now." One would think Vincent's voice rattled the glass panes on cabinet doors, for the reaction it garnered.

"I am Vincent--" there is an almost imperceptible pause, "--von Doom. This.. is MY realm; and should I choose to hand the keys to the kingdom to Kristoff Vernard, it is beyond your place or even your capacity to interfere." He drops the man to the floor, unconcerned if he stays on his feet.

Vincent surveys the room, the last of the smoke dissipating.

"Need I make myself clear with more than my words and presence?"

There's a lot of headshaking, and backing off, and the usual stereotypical Latverian commonalty's reaction to melodramatic displays of pompousness.

Kristoff gives Vincent a small wry smile before he continues getting the job done. He'll talk to him as soon as it is.

Vincent surveys the crowd with the 'expected' level of disdain, and makes a few proclamations about operational procedures, to seal the appearance. (One of them being that all residents of the pediatric ward are to receive a double portion of ice cream with their dinners that evening; those with no medical or dietary conditions dictating otherwise that is.)

"All such procedural matters are subject to Doctor Vernard's approval. I will be busying myself with higher matters, and need not be disturbed."

Which is basically Vincent setting up Kristoff to do all the work, as he likely wants it to be.

The posturing is effective, the riffraff back down, and the problems get dealt with.

When that's all done, and Kristoff finds him again, "That was a completely shameless exploitation of national conditioning and stereotypes," he says smiling warmly. "And I love you, too, phral."

Vincent can't help but smile wryly as he shrugs. "I thought I played the part well enough. We shouldn't see any further problems with the likes of them.

Now all we have to do is stave off war with four militant and/or technologically or genetically advanced nations and we should be able to call it a day."

Kristoff's had the time for a harried communication or two by now.

"I'm trying to secure us an invitation, as members of the Fantastic Four, since Latverians are hardly welcome there at the moment, to a meeting in Symkaria of national representatives involved. The two of us would head out after I ....attend to one last item of business. It is most likely some horrific trap by the real enemies behind this. Care to join me?"

Vincent very nearly responds with something witty, but it dies as something sinks into his mind.

"...I can go anywhere to protect and aid you, but... if we find him, I can't free him. I just can't." The tone is as close to an apology as he's likely to come, but it's an unspoken fact that there would be no regret.

"But I will go with you."

Kristoff puts his arms around him and just holds for a moment.

"I understand, phral."

A breath. "There's...something I need. And better to save the walk, in terms of efficiency. Can you take me back to the outskirts of the city?"

Vincent looks up at his brother, and understands immediately. "Yes... I know the place."

The world twists around them, and they emerge on a grassy patch where the houses and paths begin to grow thin.

"Go ahead." He untangles himself from Kristoff, giving him a supportive nod. "I'll be along soon."

And Kristoff nods appreciatively, walks over to the gypsy funeral grounds. He finds the spot, sinks to his knees, and finally lets the tears come.

Vincent returns some time later, carrying a basket containing a thermos of tea and a covered dish of banitsa on one arm, and a bouquet of flowers in his other hand. He sets the basket down next to Kristoff, and lays the flowers in front of the grave, putting a hand on his brother's shoulder as he kneels.

"Hello Miss Vernard. My name is Vincent." He touches his fingertips to the gravestone, brushing off a stray leaf. "I just wanted to tell you that your son has grown to be a great man; he is a dedicated husband and father, and better family than I have deserved. Thank you."
