Codemakers
He'd gotten as far as he could in reasonable confidence. Logic trees, operating parameters, and all the other basic formulas had been set. Vincent knew it was time to call in someone more proficient than he for the rest of the programming. Kristoff had already been lending him aid on the assembly of the prototype swarm, but the Refreshers needed their marching orders, so to speak.

He called Anya Stark.

Vincent woke up with a start, tangled in his sheets as he blurts out, "Ant-hill!" He blinked, then fumbled for the notepad on his nightstand, before reaching for the phone, calling Anya.

He was all but ready to run triumphant through the building calling out 'Eureka!'

"Stark," she said her voice sounding like she had been awake. "Talk to me."

"I've solved the cost-efficiency problem, for the structural reinforcement methodology. Well... not solved yet, but it should absolutely work. Do you have any titanium laying around? It doesn't matter what shape it's in."

He sets his phone to speaker as he starts getting himself dressed. He needs to get to his work space and start working on what he'll bring with him.

"What did you have in mind?" she asked as she watched the computer code scroll by.

"Alchemy." Vincent pulled on his work robe and headed down the hall, bringing the phone with him.

"Liquefication of hard metals without all the fuss of extreme temperatures, or contraction and expansion to worry about when solidifying. It's like taking a cast of an ant-hill. Use the nanites to drill out the reinforcement routes, then just use any high pressure pump to flood them with the raw liquid metal before turning it back into a solid."

He enters his work room and clears off a table, getting a burner going and getting out a crucible, transferring the call to the room's comm system. He takes a piece of plating from a scrapped project to start experimenting on.

"I should have a base test done in a few hours. Should I set up a travel kit to bring with me, or would you prefer to come here? There might be a slight brimstone smell to your lab afterward. Never comes out of the walls, really."

Blink. Alchemy? Was he for real?

"Just how do you expect to turn metals like titanium to liquid and back if you're not using conventional methods?"

Vincent paused. "Magic. I thought that was obvious.

If you're talking about for implementation once and if the technology gets distributed, I'd obviously have to control the supply of the catalyst elixer. A few drops should be enough for each matter state change once I've got the formula down though."

He gets some steel ball bearings for practice and puts them aside, checking some of his books for the formulas he's looking for. He's seen various supplies change their state before turning into something else, so this should be fairly simple. He hopes.

"How's the coding going for the route-mapping program going by the way?

"Vincent, have you talked to Kristoff about this?" Anya asked. "What you're proposing is just...impractical. Magic is something that won't be commercially accepted. Not to mention it would almost be impossible to market something based on magic. People won't take something at face value and accept it. They will want to see the science behind it. Not to mention trying to get a patent for it would be near impossible."

"It only just came to me. I'm testing it as we speak." He pours chemicals into a flask, watching them blend together.

"Hank Pym said that magic is just science that hasn't been sufficiently analyzed. Alchemy is just really advanced chemistry, and I'm not violating conservation of matter, so it's not really that big a deal.

If I were warping reality, that would be a lot harder to show the science for."

He puts a charge through the mixture, then pours it over the plating in the crucible. The metal vaporizes, then falls down to the table again in a cloud of metallic sand.

Hm. Alright, scratch that one. He starts on revising the formula.

"It is a big deal if you're going to try to market this and if you want to actually use it. Business is complicated and what can and cannot be marketed is tricky. You should really talk to Kristoff about this before doing anything."

Vincent pauses as he works on the next elixir. He'd never really given much thought to the legal ramifications of the project. He just wanted to help people.

"...I see your point."

He looks at the work in progress. "Well, I can still come up with the formula first.. even if it turns out not to be viable for replication."

Come Hel or high water, he was going to get a working option ready for at least one little cottage in the Balkans.

"Oh there's totally nothing wrong in doing something just to see if you can do it," she said. "I should have the code done soon. I do have some school work to finish up first."

"Excellent. I'll let you know when I've got my end of things done. Do you have any injection equipment on hand or should I bring or build my own?"

He looks at his schedule. "Can we say... tomorrow afternoon? I should be done with my anthropology course by then."

Assuming Professor Bartlestein didn't try to strongarm him into speaking for his 'Superheroes and Relationship Dynamics' series. It wasn't going to happen, but Vincent still made the time investment of refusing politely, rather than just blowing him off.

Anya sighed. "I'll be in New York on the 18th for family stuff. I can stop by and drop off the program."

A pause.

"Thank you for your help, Anya. You didn't have to invest your time and effort in this."
