A Deal with the Devil
A part of Argo told him he was being foolish, that he would come to regret his actions this day.   That part of him was his head and in any case, he seldom listened to it.  Far too often, he had listened to other portions of his anatomy.  But he had also learned to listen with his heart, and his heart told him that for Harmony, he would gladly pay any price.

He had left Corey back in New Orleans to call his brother.  With the sorceresses on the Defenders, he had little doubt that Andy would be in New Orleans in no time at all.  Which left Argo little time to do what needed to be done, but time enough if he did it right.

New Orleans, by nature, had a strong affinity for death and death-gods, even those not particularly associated with the culture.  Cemeteries even more so.

So he had found the nearest one from where he had left his friend, stepped inside, and looked heavenward.

"Lord Pluto... Great-Uncle...  I beseech thee... here my words and answer."

"I hear, Nephew." Pluto appeared spectrally. "What have you to discuss?"

Argo did not waste time mincing words.

"I crave a boon," he said simply. "I need passage for myself and two others to the mortal Hell-realm."

"What business have you in Mephisto's realm? Which two others?"

"I seek to save the soul of the one I love," Argo told him, not bothering to lie. Duplicity was not a part of him in the most part, and Pluto was far too skilled a schemer and liar for it to be effective.

"My brother and a worshiper."

"Ah. You are hardly the first to be unable to accept the death of a pretty friend or lover. Orpheus. Your own father. Others. My Persephone found them 'sweet.' I thought them incapable of facing reality. This will not come free, Nephew."

Argo bowed his head. He knew this was foolhardy, but the forces which ruled this universe were surely on his side. Were not the myths and legends full of those, like his father, who had braved the Underworld for love?

"I will pay whatever price you demand," he said.

"I offer you a choice, then, Nephew. Either give me some time to decide what I shall ask, or go today, and give your word on the Styx to once fulfill my future need, whatever that may be."

A lamentable choice either way, but Argo knew that time was of the essence. If he did not act now... who knew how long it would take his great-uncle to decide. Who knew what torments Harmony would undergo in that time.

"I swear," he said at last, "and give my word upon the Styx, that if you aid me in this, I shall fulfill your future need... whatever it may be."

"Then when you return here today with your brother and worshipper, the way to Mephisto's realm will be opened to you."

Argo bowed before him. "You have... my thanks, uncle," he said at last.

"I have more than that, Nephew," he says, cordially ominous. "Good fortune, and good hunting."
