Happy Birthday Stevie!
It was quite the day for Anya. It was day of the Maria Stark Foundation's Annual Winter Charity Ball, it was Steve's birthday and it was also Stevie's birthday. Anya hadn't much of a chance to get to know her dimensional half-sister, but she wasn't going to let Stevie's birthday go past without doing something for her sister.

Anya knew Stevie liked cars, so it was easy to find a gift. A small wrapped box was put on Stevie's bed. Inside was a set of car keys and a note that read 'A project for you. Happy birthday from Anya'. The keys went to the shell of a 65 Mustang Convertible

Anya hoped Stevie liked it.

Luna didn't know Stevie very well, but she knew that she liked cars. She got her a one-year subscription to Car and Driver.

Honestly, Stevie was surprised anyone other than MC had remembered. She definitely hadn't expected it.

She'd shoot off a thank-you e-mail for Luna when she got the chance.

Well, color her surprised. This might actually be one of the few decent things that had happened in this dimension.

Stevie popped a text Anya's way.

Red,

You're all right.

Thanks,

Stevie.

Natasha left a card in Stevie's room and inside of it was a credit card. The card said from Natasha, Tony and Nick and there was a note that said the card was for parts or anything else Stevie needed or wanted.

Maybe this place wasn't so bad after all. Stevie would make sure to thank them the next time she came by to see the baby brother.

MC gave her BFF the traditional present: shoes.

And a pair of boots she actually would wear.

MC would actually get sought out. "You do like our little game, don't you?"

What game would that be?" Marie Claire was busy trying to fix her transporter device. With a set of pink precision tools.

"The shoes," Stevie told her. "These ones had heels."

Independent of his wife's gift, Tony is waiting for Stephanie at the mansion at some point during the day.

"Hello, Stephanie. Are you busy?" he asks.

Well, this came as a surprise. The calling her Stephanie (something only her mom did previously) think rankled a bit, but she pushed past it.

"Oh, um, hey," she says. "Not really."

"Okay. I was thinking that you and I could work on your car, if you want some help that is." Tony says.

"If you don't, then no problem. I was just in the neighborhood and stopped in to say hi." he says.

Say... what now? This fell into even more unexpected territory than before. Stevie was suddenly operating without a map.

"You know what, Not-the-Mama?" she said. "I do believe I could use an extra hand."

Stevie led Tony out to the garage, where her "car" was.

"You guys really surprised me with this. I wasn't really expecting anything."

Tony says nothing for a long moment, then lays a hand on Stephanie's shoulder.

"This is selfish of me to ask, but...I'd like it if you'd consider staying, Stephanie. You didn't expect us to get you anything, but you're family and we want to make sure you're happy here." Tony says.

Okay, this had gone seriously weird.

"Wait, you mean, like here as in this dimension? Because MC keeps telling me she's gonna have the do-dad fixed any day now..."

"Yes, I mean this dimension, Stephanie." Tony says.

"You're my daughter and I'd like for you to stay here. We'll figure...something out regarding the Clint-Me thing, but I'd like us to get to know each other better." he says.

Stevie almost frowns, but catches herself.

"Okay, I am going home, sooner or later. MC will fix her gizmo."

...Which was really broken, according to her friend, but still...

"But... until they, yeah. Okay."

She looks down at the floor. "Might be good practice for patching things up with Mom."

"Tell me a couple of things, Stephanie. Please." Tony requests.

"What is the biggest issue you feel that you have with your mother?" he asks.

"And...what was her relationship with her parents like?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]hot_rod

"Honestly?" Stevie replies, "Biggest thing is just feeling like nothing I ever did was going to be good enough for her. She just... doesn't get that I'm not her. That I don't want her life. Especially since I'm not... smart or anything. Cars, I get, but that's about it."

She frowns. "She... doesn't talk about it much, but I know she and her dad didn't get along well. ...At all."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"I didn't get along with my dad, either. He was stuck in the past and he was a raging egomaniac. Nothing I ever did was good enough, so I let my children know that I'm proud of them every day. I'm proud of the beautiful young woman you are, even if I didn't raise you." Tony says.

"You don't have to be a mechanical genius like Anya to be smart, Stevie. You're great just as you are." he says.

Well, of all the things Not-the-Mama could have said, those were some of the last things Stevie was expecting.

She felt just a little of her tough girl facade break down and managed a smile.

"Wish Mom had said that."

"I'm sure that she feels it, Stephanie. As much as I dislike how my father treated me, though, he did do one thing right. He made me learn how to push myself to what I thought were my limits and exceed them." Tony says.

"I think she's trying to teach you how to be the best you can be, though her method leaves a lot to be desired." he says.

It may well have explained why her parents' marriage hadn't worked out. Her father was much more laid back compared to her mother, though he pushed too, he was more content to let Stevie find her own path.

"Maybe you're right," she admits. "I hope I get the chance to find out."

Sometimes gifts were a collaborative family effort and Stevie's were exactly that. James knew about the car so he went with a pair of fuzzy dice, a pair of overalls with her name on them and a promise to help if she needed it.

Well, the dorky brother was all right after all. Stevie would give him a thanks the next chance she got, and would probably take him up on that sooner or later.
