On one hand, so long as he keeps flying backwards, paying attention to staying just out of reach, he's not getting hit, just leading the monster backwards as he dodges and weaves, blasting away.
On the downside, he's not doing any damage this way either, but its buying the Avengers' roster some time to get here and get their bearings.
