Lucas is usually the picture of self assurance. He doesn't seem to have 90 percent of the awkward of the typical teenage male. Learning a degree of mastery over telepathy and magic at the same time, while being fairly physically adept and active for his age has a way of helping. There's one thing that he hasn't got quite the same degree of confidence on though - girls. There just weren't many his age on the reservation, and he's had to spend a lot of time on his studies.

So its with an unusual bit of hesitance that he heads into the girls' wing and lounge during the day, when its proper to do so and all, obviously in search of someone or something.

"Good nose, good call. Of course, unless you like dehydrated corn, raw ginger or raw chicken soaked in buttermilk, you'll probably have to raid the fridge. But lots in the works."

Corey sighed dramatically. "Yeah, it's a bit much even for me. And I like garum sauce. ...Now that's something you can literally smell cooking from a mile away. Nova Roma's got laws against fixing garum sauce when it's windy."

Coreyr will get stuff from the fridge and take up one of the few tiny free corners of the kitchen area fixing himself a glass of chili-cocoa.

"So is there a sports team coming over for dinner or something?"

"Well, tomorrow its going to be stone ground corn tortillas, cold fried chicken and homemade ginger ale... but that's several hours away. And no, I just have a date. Going for a picnic."

"Moira Hrimsdottir, picnic lunch tomorrow morning."

"Cool. She's great. And I think it's awesome you're going cutting out the middleman on the ginger ale. That's hardcore."

"Hard... oh... right. No, its... well, on the reservation, the store runs out of everything but raw ingredients all the time, and supplies are inconsistent. We learn to make just about everything. Its a lot less expensive, and just easier sometimes. And the ginger ale isn't near as much effort as the tortillas... but the store bought ones aren't nearly as good."

"Oh, definitely not as good," Corey agrees, listening to all that and nodding. "Grandad Lucius is a big fan of knowing how to do stuff, too. Mom could probably make clothes if you gave her a sheep. Cait and I never quite picked it up that far."

"Making basic clothing isn't that hard, really. Though I prefer leather working to weaving. Sounds like your granddad is a smart man."

"He is." Corey cleans up after himself and drinks his chili-cocoa.

And of course Lucas can do his own leatherworking. Corey grins and shakes his head a little. "Lucas, this is going to come as a weird question, but you don't sculpt, do you?"

Self sufficiency is big at home, and with mom, and with Michael. And time to learn when he wasn't doing things like dating or having much of a social life.

Blink. "No, afraid not. Why?"

" Just wondering how much of a Renaissance Man thing you had going. "

And slightly wanting to be mollified over the fact that Lucas can probably out-cook him, and half a dozen other useful things. Good thing Corey doesn't want to start dating now, he'd look totally outclassed.

"Mostly just where its practical. Cooking, weaving, basket-making, leather working, car and home repairs... never really spent a lot of time on arts. I make my dream catchers, but those tie into powers, so still practical, even if you don't believe in the spirituality of it. I never really thought of it as Renaissance Man... just kid who grew up in the middle of nowhere with a mother and mentor who were very big on self-sufficiency. And no television."

"Probably a better way of putting it, yeah. And it's practically impressive how much time one can waste on a TV when one's around."

"Well, not all a waste. I kind of like the Discovery channel, I'm finding. That, and I love baseball. Always used to listen to Rockies games on the radio. Kind of nice being able to see it. But yeah, other than school, life was mostly lived outdoors, with all that entailed."

"The Discovery channel can be fun. Even the commercials for it are fun, really." Corey grinned sheepishly. "Well, you've seen me at baseball, I'm afraid."

"Sure, but who cares if you're any good at it? Its fun. You and your sister were entertaining to watch, though I think I prefer the unpowered version of the game."
