Dusty revelations. (Anselm)
Shelly couldn't exactly tell Matt that she was still having some residual issues from being bitten by Dracula.  This was something that she knew with complete certainty because if Matt knew he was likely to try something incredibly stupid which would ultimately be worse than what she was dealing with.  She chatted minimally with a friend at the hospital about it and he suggested it was a mild case of PTSD, but Shelly rather knew better.  Dracula's bites were strange things and often had to have magic or occult intervention.  That is what lead Shelly to Wick and Wonder, a small occult-type shop a block or two from Matt's.  That and the pressing need for more candles to use in her healing rituals for private clients.

It may also have been an excuse to take Whisper a cheeseburger.

Having gotten a little information from Matt Walker about Chicago's preternatural society, Anselm decided to do some research to find out what Walker either didn't know or didn't want to tell.

He made a list of Chicago's occult shops and was currently in Wick and Wonder, sitting in a chair in a back corner reading an old book on Chicago's underground history. It was fascinating, but all cities with seamy underbellies were fascinating. He was looking for specific hints about the past and what was drawing vampires and other creatures to this place. Sooner or later, his mother would put in an appearance and it wouldn't do to be caught unprepared when she began her usual bribery to bring him to her side.

Shelly moved around the store slowly and deliberately, almost as though she was focused only on her shopping trip. It took her a moment to recognize Anselm in the corner but she did catch his eye at one point and smiled.

She couldn't approach him unless he spoke to her. Privacy rules.

Anselm recognized the good doctor and smiled back. He was surprised to see a medical doctor in an occult store. He thought the profession had long since abandoned any taint of magic in its practices.

"Doctor," he said by way of greeting. "Did I miss a follow-up appointment?"

When he spoke and indicated her as doctor, she felt free to speak.

"Hello, and not that I am aware of. What brings you here? You're looking well."

As a lifelong scholar himself, the title was offered with all respect due to her profession and education.

"It's an interest of mine." He lifted the book in his lap, a history of Chicago's underground and the uses it had been put through during the early part of the twentieth century by various occult groups. "The public libraries will only make so much available before they start giving me odd looks for asking."

Shelly looked at the title and nodded.

"That author has a couple of other books that go into detail about some of the neighborhoods. There are several hotspots of activity here." She thought about the Valentine's Day vampire fiasco and idly scratched her neck.

"You can't even get some of this material in the libraries. There are some things that simply aren't accessible unless you know the right avenues. This place is definitely a good start."

"It usually is, no matter what city you're in. The smallest store specializing in the unusual and otherworldly will have better research material and be more willing to share it."

He closed the book out of politeness. "And you? What brings you here?"

"I needed to pick up a few candles for some rituals I will be doing this week. I usually send to my father for my other supplies, but the candles here are incredible. And it gives me an excuse to stop by Mac's to get my favorite dog a cheeseburger,."

"I believe that the occurances of paranormal and outright demonic activity in this City is too high to be coincidence alone." Shelly looked around quickly for a moment before stepping a bit closer to Anselm. "My boyfriend has had all sorts of weird cases lately. I've personally been bitten by Dracula, and on Valentine's Day we did battle with some bloodsuckers in an alley about a block from here. This doesn't count the demons. Chicago...has something going on."

One brow went up.

"What do you know of hellhounds?"

Shelly really only knew of one, the one that was going to be getting a visit from his favorite Cheeseburger Fairy in a bit.

"Doctor, all creatures communicate in some manner." It was a pitiful response, but all he could muster. The doctor was far more observant than he was accustomed in dealing with people.

"Of course they do. But Whisper is especially communicative. He can speak, literally, can't he? A certain hellhound's cheeseburger is riding on whether or not you answer me truthfully."

Anselm sighed. "He is a hellhound, Doctor. They are able to communicate, but only those with certain... background can understand their language. He is very fond of you, and the other one. I don't know what other one he means."

"Could be Marlow. We both tend to spoil Whisper despite Matt asking us not to. Been tempted to find him a lady friend, too." Shelly shrugged a bit. This was interesting, discovering that her suspicions about the dog being exceptional had indeed been correct. What was more interesting was what Anselm said. Or rather, didn't say. She zeroed in on that.

"And what sort of background do you have, Anselm?"

"One that allows me to understand and respect hellhounds. I'm not sure if Mr. Walker understands exactly what he's treating like a dog, but Whisper appears to be fine with him." He rose and placed the book he'd been reading back on a shelf. "I've studied the occult for many years, in many places."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]blackmagicwoman
2011-04-27 04:56 pm UTC (link)
"That doesn't quite sound like it would qualify one to actually speak to hellhounds."

She smiled a little bit about the idea of Matt not really understanding Whisper.

"And that seems about right with Matt and Whisper. It doesn't take a genius to understand that Whisper is the one in charge there. I suspect he's keeping an eye on Matt whilst getting as many cheeseburgers he can. It's not a bad life for a dog-like creature."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]seenitall

Because of course, telling a voodoo practicing doctor that he was part demon would be a much better answer.

"If it sets your mind at ease, Whisper appreciates the spoiling. He is practically a chatterbox."

"I wish I could understand him. I like talking at him. I'd rather talk to him. I'm sure he could give me an earful about Matt. I am still curious about how it is exactly you can understand him."

Already she was considering just asking Whisper herself. He was a clever beast. He could figure out how to express himself.

"What sort of an attack?"

"If my boyfriend gets his way he will personally kill them all, their friends, and die himself in the process." Shelly pauses. "He has a couple of personal reasons to want Dracula dead. I do, too. The vampires here are out of control and we really need to stop them before they fully take over the city. I have heard that there are parts of the south side that are entirely vampire at this point, which is a horrifying thought. Whatever makes Chicago a hot bed is also emboldening the vampires. We need help. Matt, our friends and I...we can't do this alone."

"The easiest way is to tamper with their blood supply," Anselm said, thinking over the centuries' of experience, "but that would be far too complicated with human lives in the balance."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]blackmagicwoman
2011-04-29 11:11 am UTC (link)
"Maybe not," she says thoughtfully. "It would just take an observation and understanding of where the vampires are most concentrated and how they are acquiring their blood. I know they aren't fully dependent on feeding. That would make them too obvious at this point. They are very likely relying on private sources--vampire clubs, friendly phlebotomists."

She knew a few of those.

"If we can discover the pattern and sources, we can in turn begin contaminating those sources. It runs the risk of a surge in danger to the public at large, but it would also briefly weaken them, providing us opportunity."

As Shelly saw it, Anselm was in.

"All very methodical steps. Has Mr. Walker made provisions to do so?" It seemed to Anselm that a wizard with a hellhound at his side would have thought past the one-at-a-time kill.

Shelly just shook her head.

"You aren't telling me anything that I don't already know and that I haven't already lectured him about. He is going to get himself killed and...and I don't know if I can handle that. That's half of why I work with him. I'd like to keep my boyfriend nice and alive if I can. He feels like he has something to prove or atone for."
