Hajime doesn't have the fancy powers many others do. He's not a mutant, he can't do anything especial to his sword (though he'd claim he doesn't need to.)
What Hajime is, as Jushiro finds when he tests him, is 700 years good. Trained by the kenku swordmasters good. Sword-Saint good.
He side-steps the thrust without breaking stance or drawing his sword.
"I will give your efforts the credit they are due. Tell me when you are actually ready to begin."
