He had expected her to tell him never to speak to her again, to curse him and hate him. He would have borne all of that without question. Hearing that she seemed concerned for him was worse than being hated.
It made what he was going to do that much harder.
Yes. We should talk in person, if nothing else.
And a moment later, Eli stands before her, looking over her. Normally, there is a light in Eli's eyes, a joy that can't be suppressed, even if he isn't smiling.
Today, that light is not there. His attempts a smile, but it is weak and doesn't reach his eyes. His expression is weary, tired even, which is another thing that marks something as off.
"You are recovering, Librarian Princess." Eli observes, noting the blood being pumped into her. It makes him ill to see her like this.
If not for me, she would never have been there that afternoon.
"We cannot do this anymore." Eli says, before he can stop himself or find a better way to put it.
"This...between us. It must end. Now. For your protection." he says.
