The Spartans had been one of the most disciplined fighting forces in history. They did not break ranks when the attacks came at them Instead they kept formation, put their shields up and attacked anyone who came close with a spear.
Somehow their shields and light armor absorbed the blows aimed at them. Almost as if the shields and armor were enchanted somehow.
