Reading Hurts!
Marlow poured over the book she borrowed from Corey every chance she had, trying to read the handwritten pages until she gave herself a blazing headache. Her reading skills weren't the best. Her Latin was passable and she had a grounding in odd, sometimes alien languages found in magical texts she'd studied under Clea's tutelage in the Dark Dimension. She'd often had to puzzle through cramped handwriting, but this was becoming more than she could decipher on her own. English /was/ her first language, but it wasn't her strongest when it came to reading, and this didn't flow well enough to be understood. The drawings were distracting, too. Her non-traditional education emphasized controlling and redirecting energy, coaxing it into various forms and illusions, bending it to her will. After that, the three Rs just weren't all that interesting.

The writing would not bend no matter how she looked at it. It constantly changed styles and even languages, and in some places faded away completely. There were spells she could use to bring it out, but it was a borrowed book. Not the oldest she'd ever studied, but old enough that she was wary of damaging it. It might also be spelled for defense. It could hurt her if she tried to go that route.

She finally gave up and went to the main house to get something for her headache. She carried the book with her to see if Sydney or Dawn could help. Maybe they could help her read it, or at least tell her if she was on the right track. She left it on the table while she rummaged for something to drink and searched for a bottle of aspirin in the cupboards.

Dawn could currently be found in the living room of the main house, absently reading through one of the Southern Vampire Mysteries. Sure, she'd just fought real vampires, but hey... these were good and steamy.

She looked up when she heard Marlow, getting up herself to see what was going on.

"Hey, Marlow."

Marlow emerged from the fridge with a pitcher of tea. "Hi Dawn. Want some?"

"Sounds good, thanks," Dawn said.

Marlow found two glasses and filled them with ice from the ice maker in the refrigerator door. "I've been reading all day and my head hurts."

"Oh yeah?" Dawn asked, as she took the tea, mouthing thanks again. "What've you been reading?"

She pointed to the book sitting on the table away from anything harmful. The worn leather binding made it seem so innocent. "A friend of mine found it in a shop in New Orleans. It seems to be a record of witch families. He thinks I'm in it. It's really hard to read. There's a lot of writing and it's not easy."

"Huh..." she began. "Interesting. But I kinda thought... you weren't... from around here?"

There were vague hand gestures trying to indicate dimensionality.

"I was raised in the Dark Dimension from the time I was a baby until I came here and joined the Defenders. This is supposed to be continuing my education and socializing me."

She gave Dawn a half smile and a shrug. "I guess I'm kind of weird but I think I've done okay getting along with people. I don't know how Doctor Strange got me, only that Clea raised me there and told me that I had no family and the people who were trying to take care of me couldn't handle a baby with magical abilities.

"Right," Dawn agreed. "So you were born here but raised there, maybe? That's kinda... weird, really. But yeah, you seem like you get along fine with people to me, but I don't know if I'm the best judge and..."

She stopped. "Sorry. Babbling."

"But your friend thinks he found you? So... you might have family after all?"

"It's okay. I babble. Titan doesn't mind."

She went for the book to show Dawn the name. "In this family. Nicholas Salem," she pointed out another name, "is with the Thunderbolts in New Orleans. He's a Ghost Rider. This family has evil in it. I could tell when he talked about them. I just can't read enough of the text itself to figure out how or why."

"Weird," Dawn said. "But... name sounds familiar. The Salem part. Think Doctor Strange mentioned it once."
