All Hallow's Eve
All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween as it has been come to be called, is a popular holiday with children and adults alike. It is a holiday that had its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain or Summer's End. Samhain celebrated the end of the "lighter half" of the year and the beginning of the "darker half".

On this evening the barriers between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be thin and the spirits, good and bad, of the dead could pass through. The spirits of the family's ancestors were welcomed in while evil and bad spirits were warded off by the wearing of masks and costumes. The costumes and masks disguised one as a harmful spirit and avoided harm from others.

It was also a harvest celebration and time to take stock of food stores for the winter. Livestock were slaughtered and the meat prepared for storage. It was the final harvest of the year and the crops were then stored for the winter. Celebrations included bonfires and tales of the family's ancestors.

It was a celebration of the dead and of the harvest.

Today we dress up in scary and not so scary costumes and masks and go door to door for candy or attend costume parties. It is a night for revelry, pranks and fun.

A matronly woman opens the first door.

"Trick or treat." Angelo cheerfully intones, met with cooing and applause by the woman.

"Oh! I love your costumes! You two are such an adorable couple... oh wait, you're not siblings are you? I made that mistake earlier this evening, it was so embarrassing.."

Angelo just gapes again, at a loss for words as he flushes crimson.

Angelo coughs, as Charlotte ~~horrifies~~ surprises him yet again. "I think that might be best for everyone."

And so, the trick or treating will continue. Angelo sticks close to Charlotte at all times, thanking each household they visit, even when things such as apples or toothbrushes are given out. One particularly hasty withdrawal is made when they open a door and an elderly man in a suit with a somewhat haggard look in his eye begins reciting scripture about the evils of the holiday. Angelo decided they needed to depart very quickly before family standards forced him to begin telling the man off.

Why is it always the furthest fringe malcontents that know their scripture best?

It was, overall, a very pleasant evening.

It *was* pleasent. When she'd gotten enough candy aka her bag got to heavy, she had another suggestion - every year there was a big event in central park: haunted houses, fair candy, the works..it was well lit and supervised, that would pass Angelo's over developed sniff test of boring, but it still promised to have a good time with a slightly older crowd...the 8 year olds were starting to glare at their older competition.

	"I... suppose that would be acceptable, yes." Angelo conceded, and once a suitable departure point was found, teleported them to Central Park. The festivities were already in full-swing, prompting him to stay a bit closer to Charlotte than previously. He wasn't afraid of crowds on his own, but he had her safety to consider. She certainly seemed to enjoy it - that she hadn't enjoyed the trick or treating, espicially in the nice, warm building...but it was just another excuse to stay close, to keep her fingers from turning as blue as her costume as she dragged him between the games and the carnival food.

"Common Ang...this is your chance to show off...pick your poison, baseballs at milk cans or ping pongs in jars?"

Angelo draws himself up, and nods sharply. "Baseballs, I think." He marches over to the blatantly rigged game and pays for a few shots' worth. His particular power-set won't let him counterbalance the cheat, but his throwing arm isn't bad. Enough knife-work had seen to that.

He goes through his first round of attempts, and manages to win a 'small' prize, likely worth less than he paid even for the chance, made by sweatshop labor somewhere. He holds up the stuffed walrus to Charlotte. "Should I try to 'double down' for one of the bigger ones?"

"I didn't say that, I was just concerned about your comfort. Heaven knows there are plenty of women wearing much less. I just... well..." He clears his throat, then speaks quietly.

"Charlotte, I'm not sure you're entirely aware of just how.. pleasant that outfit is." He gives an awkward nod of the head to a number of young men (and one woman) giving her an approving eye.

"The point of going out this evening was for you to have a good time. If you are doing so, then the evening is a success." He smiles. "I'm happy to still be your escort."

	He grins sheepishly. "I'm afraid you missed me in my element earlier today. I was baking batches of pumpkin cookies and muffins to be dispensed at one of the shelters I volunteer at. I will try to let myself be more free, though." Angelo isn't quite sure what that's going to entail this evening, but he will try. "Would you still like to try the Haunted House?" 	Angelo would never conceive of such a cad-like line of thinking, but he will of course come to the damsel in distress' rescue. It's also rather fun.
