:::Sigh:::
Vernique had had flying time with Solver and was now trying to get him to settle down in the afternoon sun. Sometimes she thought things would be easier if she kept him inside more, but most days she willing to get a little exhausted.

She spotted her brother-in-law. "Hal!"

"Vernique!" he calls back cheerily, heading her direction immediately. "Thine afternoon ist proceeding well?"

"Yep. Somebody had a very nice flight. And still isn't quite napping ready. How are things going for you?"

"Fair well. The movie ist proceeding, thou seemeth in good spirits. I worry for mine sister, but she wilt o'ercome this ill fortune."

"...I worry about her too. Not so much the injury itself --although of course that's awful, but it's Svalin, for pete's sake -- but how she's taking it."

He considers that a few moments. "Aye? Thou seeth her more oft than I. What ist thou'rt so worried o'er?"

"She's letting the idea of not being able to protect us really get to her. More than it needs to. She's probably better with her off hand than most people are with their good hand, and what's more, she has some of the best backup imaginable. I realize the backup part doesn't have a lot of warrior cred or whatever, but it should."

He nods. "Tis her duty. Tis oft ver' hard for warriors to lose a limb. Sometimes magic canst cure them, sometimes not, and such ist in short supply here. Besides, with her favored weapon and finesse, she wouldst not do so well with a weapon graft as some might."

Vernique sighs. "Yeah. I realize it's... An Asgardian thing."

He nods. "Tis... different for her. A leader must project confidence, and right now she has none. Wert she a bear-sark or line warrior, she wouldst but attach an axe or spear to the stump and move on... but t'would not be fitting for her. She wilt recover in time and find a suitable answer, but it mayst take time." he replies, reasonably calmly. Lost limbs happened.

"Tech might be the solution to go with if magic won't work for the situation. I just feel like someone in a leadership role ought to be able to say 'hey, I've got some of the best people in the nine worlds willing to go to bat for me,' guess I can relax just a little. And I hate the fact that that just seems to make her feel worse."

"She ist in a difficult position. You see her family's devotion... but her position ist much debated in Asgard. Many doth not wish to follow a female warrior as the heir, and others wouldst test her constantly, regardless of her gender. If she shows sign of weakness, the ambitious and the doubters wilt try to topple her and let someone else take her place. For all its wonders... Asgard ist a warrior society, and strength hast a greater value there than gold."

She listens. Oh brother, the whole place-for-everything hierarchy schtick didn't even get Svalin out of the dog-eat-dog garbage? Stupid Golden Realm. "Ah," she said quietly. "Damn it, I wish I knew how to be more helpful, Hal."

"What's that supposed to mean? Yes, I do. If you haven't said before, it's probably something I won't like, but there's plenty of things I don't like. I can woman up and deal."

"Good, because only thou'rt in a position to help her. She wouldst listen to none else the same way. Thou needst to tell her, as her wife, that she needeth to get out of thine home and find her solution. Thou wilt help her, but the answer wilt not be found within walls. Be it magic, technology, or aught else... thou needst to remind her that she ist not yet ready to retire and must be on with it, in as direct of terms as possible. I know tis not thy way... but tis what she needeth to hear and who she must needs hear it from. Only thee can kick her out of her moping quarters."

She listens.

"I'd like to take the opportunity to point out that that's the most ridiculous way of being supportive ever, but okay. If that's what she needs, I'll give it a try."

"She ist Asgardian. If given quiet solace, she wilt accept it, and respond with quiet in turn. Given a challenge... she hast trained her life entire to rise to it. But she needeth step out of her quarters first."

"I hath ne'er been aught but honest with thee, fair one." Except for the stories at the wedding - but there he was supposed to exaggerate, of course. "Besides, methinks hadst thou wished quiet comforts and support, thou wouldst hath found Aridis or Lady Sydney."

Vernique smiles. "Always good talking to you, too, Hal. And you're right." And she'll bundle up Solver's things and inside it is.
