Salt... used in the rituals to banish and bind evil spirits. Precious in his time, commonplace now, its other uses forgotten.
Hajime is no ritualist or priest, but still knows this much. Taking his time to do it properly, thanking the kami and his ancestors - he'll thank Clockwork later - and careful with the blade, he begins to apply the salt over the Masamune blade.
