Just Your Ordinary Family Dinner (When the combined attendees could probably level a small nation)
The first thing had been Gio's insistence that the dinner take place in Genosha, for security reasons. That had been a non-issue for him to agree to. Then there was some discussion of a menu, and the headcount range. The seating arrangement had nearly been the source of a small anxiety attack, before Andrew helpfully intervened.

It had taken multiple jumps, both the day before and the day of the dinner, but Angelo had assembled everything he needed for dinner. Mother's kitchen was the next best thing, of course, but it wasn't his kitchen. Besides that, there was a balance of ingredients he wanted to buy the day of, fresh, rather than drop them off the day before. Genosha was, of course, the most beautiful country in the world, but as Andrew had pointed out, it was somewhat lacking in cattle, and even some poultry. It was amazing what putting together a large scale tapas-French fusion meal did to calm his mind and keep it off the Worst Possible Outcomes of the dinner.

Plus, his girlfriend loved watching him prep and cook, which made him feel wonderful. True to his word, he'd let her help to the best of her ability, which also included making sure Mother didn't lift a finger so far as dinner preparation went. He left it to Andrew and Gio to handle any interim small-talk until he put the first course, a simple set of salads, out.

He gave Charlotte a brief kiss before they headed out, ringing a dinner bell before grabbing the tray of dishes and heading to the dinner table, set for a very decent number of people. Angelo, Charlotte, Gio, Andrew, Sengai, Rikki, Simon, Magneto, Paris, Carmella, and three extra seats kept ready in case Alex, Lorna, or (for a very slim chance of likelihood) Raven made themselves present.

"Dinner, is served."

Gio did not sigh or roll her eyes at her baby brother's neuroses. Because she didn't do that at family dinners in the first place, and when the Head of State was present, all the more so.

And darn straight they'd brought the Embassy staff back to Genosha. Father and Magneto were not to be in New York, or asked to go to New York. They didn't get the respect of other embassies and consulates, so technicalities would not benefit them.

Angelo was taking this entirely out of proportion. Magneto hadn't had any problems with her and Andrew. And being older, they were far more serious.

Sengai was having an anxiety attack of his own, though for different reasons than Angelo. He wrung his hands perhaps for the twentieth time since arriving in Genosha. Here he was, son of the traitor, about to be in the same room as Magneto and Exodus. Half of him was convinced he was going to die..so much so he sent a letter to his parents beforehand telling them he loved them. Outwardly he tried to remain serene.

It seemed like nearly everyone was a bundle of nerves here, and Simon was no exception. Because above all he couldn't figure out why he was here.

Not to mention this was a dinner with The Head of State (who was he to ever even meet him?) and there was that little thing about Simon being a former Xavier student. Former. But still, people could hold that against him. Or gloat about him 'switching'. Either way it would be weird he was sure.

Then there was the little fact that he'd no doubt not be able to hear a lot of what was said. And what if he was asked something and he just nodded along and made some faux pas?

This was going to be terribly stressful.

Rikki was her own bundle of nerves, but for entirely different reasons. Dinner with Lord Magneto himself, hallowed be his names and works, she should be so blessed.

She was not worthy of this consideration, but she would do her best to seem so.

Gio had made sure to quickly but politely introduce the staff to the 'adults,' of course. There's a way to do things.

Andrew, meanwhile, seems calm and collected about the whole affair. He's greeted everyone, helped with any arrangements he could, and spent a little time talking to friends from Genosha. Really, about the same as he does everywhere when social matters come up.

Magneto is one of the last to actually arrive. Capable he may be, but ruling a nation, especially with some of the current tensions, is demanding. Thankfully, he's had a lot of experience schooling his outward attitudes. So rather than stressed - he just looks severe - kind of like usual. That probably doesn't ease anyone's mind any.

Charlotte was generally easy going, not much ruffled her feathers. But this? This had her...acting other than her normal self. She'd been gone for almost a year...and the circumstances which she left - running away - it added a whole new level of tension. She was unusually quiet thus far, spending most of the time in the bathroom, finally coming out when she heard her boyfriend...sticking to the back of the room as people headed for the table.

Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are as happy as they ever appear. The children are home, for some unspecified reason, and even Charlotte, who'd given everyone a scare, appears perfectly healthy.

Paris gives a small polite nod when introduced to the ones he doesn't know. Carmella is staring at the Senyaka boy, and he has to telepathically remind her that getting themselves overly concerned with traitors, outside those posing an immediate threat, never worked well for them.

Finally, Paris speaks up. "I'm sure it is excellent, Angelo. While we are more than happy to have everyone over --" a nod to the strangers and his liege. " --you were...somewhat unclear about the occasion."

"Thank you, Father, and my apologies to all present." He inclines his head to Magneto. He's already greeted everyone individually, so he keeps that brief. He lets everyone get seated and begin on their salads. Charlotte is seated next to him, and he gives her hand a discrete squeeze under the table.

"There are a small handful of things to address, and as I'm still on a bit of a time budget regarding courses, you'll have to excuse me for staggering them.

First, I wanted to thank Andrew again for encouraging me to attend culinary school. As I hope this evening will attest, it's been going very well. I've also begun independent study into, and looked at schools that offer event management. I've come to realize that my skill with knives has more expansive benefits than simply a backup bodyguard."

Gio looked at him. She wasn't a projector. Just wasnt how she did things. But she didn't need to be a good telepath to communicate with a glare.

"Which is all well and good... and we're glad to host this visit. But you didn't come all the way back here over school. You're also trying to explain this while worried about the food. Why doesn't everyone sit down, and then we can hear whatever it is you'd like to talk about?"

Angelo practically pushes his chair back under the force of that glare, before Magneto's words simultaneously terrifying him and resolutely take some of the weight off his shoulders.

"Well... to get right to the heart of matters, sir..." He stands up, visibly holding Charlotte's hand. "Charlotte and I have been dating for just under a year now. She's asked me to move in with her, and I've accepted. I felt informing our families was the only prudent thing to do."

Okay, deep breaths now, Angelo. Just relax. Let any reactions come. Do not flee to the kitchen. You know very well how long you have before you need to bring out the appetizers.

There was no way he could flee..she was squeezing his hand for dear life - and honestly it had absolutely nothing to do with the announcement he just made. What parent wouldnt be *thrilled* that Angelo was courting their daughter? He was kind, polite, a gentleman, sweet, giving...hell, add onto it that he was a mutant and he was by *far* the ideal child between the two of them.

That didn't mean she was speaking up. For once...she kept her lip zipped.

Simon managed to suppress the overwhelming urge to facepalm loudly and roll his eyes when Angelo began talking about his studies. The was The Head of State! You didn't invite him over for a dinner just to tell him about how your classes were going!

Well at least being called out on it seemed to have manned him up a little and let him just blurt it out. Simon just rests his chin on his hand to watch how this all plays out. Definitely a show.

"I have an announcement too..." God, someone had to break that silence and she stood up, then grabbed her wine glass and held it up, waiting until the table did the same. "I got a job..an internship, teaching and being a tutor...at Xavier's." See? A good girlfriend always took the bullet.

And Gio stops inwardly sighing at how her brother handles things to blink. "Xavier's?" Charlotte, that's an incredible security risk. Making the trip out to westchester every day... because you are not staying there! Philosophical differences aside, can't you do your internship at a school that doesn't fill its own cemetary?"

Simon stays very still but his eyebrow twitches with anger.

To Xavier's?! He'd been there! And he'd left! Why the hell did she want to go there? Was this just a rebellious stage?

Well fine. She could go off to the hypocritical preaching bastard if she wanted and find out that all that talk about helping mutants was really about.

Angelo's head, followed by the rest of his body, spins to face Charlotte. "Why didn't you tell me about this?"

Which isn't what he wanted the first thing he said to be. He realizes how it must sound.

"A car would really be wasteful spending right now. I can get you there and back myself." He really doesn't have any issue with Xavier's, besides the inherent risks his sister already pointed out.

Magneto is finally about to react to the first news when the second hits. He opens his mouth, trying to take this all in, then stands, features shifting with anger - but restrained anger.

"Xavier's? That is pre-" before another voice does the unthinkable, and cuts Magneto off.

"An excellent opportunity." Andrew responds, somewhat more quietly. But still enough to turn his grandfather's head his way.

"She's as safe there as at the Embassy. Both have had their troubles. You've been Headmaster there... you disagreed, left... but you had to try it. Had to see if the gap could be bridged. As much as I'd like to have my Aunt's help at the Embassy, she and Angelo both need to see more of the world, more perspectives first hand."

Magneto's temper rises. He's unused to being contradicted, or even interrupted. He locks eyes with his grandson, and one can almost envision the unspoken exchange between the two of them. With the unrest in portions of his nation, he's almost recalled the mission as it was more than once. He very nearly does so, or at least uses that suggestion verbally now - or any number of others.

He is Magneto, he does not take well to being challenged. He does not compromise his ideals.

And with that thought, two things make his mind up.

First, Sam Guthrie. The comments once exchanged on how those very ideals, the inability to bend, to see the world changing would cost him those who might believe him. That the tighter he closed his grip, the more students would slip through the cracks. He lost them, failed Charles, failed their chance at compromise - and whatever she may think of him, he does not want to lose his daughter.

Second, Andrew himself. He had expected some flinch, or further sign of disrespect. He finds neither. Instead, they meet eyes, and he sees... himself.
It wouldn't matter if he recalled them, if he forbade Charlotte, any of it. He wouldn't change any minds any more than all of Xavier's idealism has changed his.

"On one condition. You will let Angelo transport you back and forth. Xavier's may be as safe as the embassy, but the open road isn't. Please do not try and push me further."

...wow. An honest to god compromise. It gave her...hope for her dad. It was a little overwhelming, she never realized how much hinged on her father choosing her happiness over his philosophy.

He bent, he compromised, he offered one condition - and joking or not, she immediately chose to push it and ask for something else that was not the compromise. No, Magneto looks neither amused nor happy. Not even a little.

"Do you want to accept the terms, or not?"
