I Followed My Small Destiny With Valor
Svalin didn't sleep during the night as she never could sleep on the eve of battle. Instead she waited with armor and Vigfrior ready. This would be the toughest battle of her life so far and though she knew she'd lose, she wouldn't go down without putting up a fight. She didn't know when she would be whisked away, but she would be prepared for when it did happen.

One moment she was in the small bungalow she shared with her wife, son and Brandr and the next was at the base of Yggdrasil.

The Next Morning

Svalin woke with a start and gasped as she sucked air into her lungs. It was heavily polluted air of Los Angeles, but to her it seemed sweet.

She found herself on the lawn of the compound. Svalin pulled herself to a sitting position and blinked against the light of the rising sun. She slipped a hand beneath her armor and touched the spot where the claw had pierced her flesh and found it whole, but could feel the raised skin of the scar that was now there.

She closed her eyes and enjoyed the feel and warmth of the sunlight on her face. Air was sucked into her lungs and expelled in deep breaths that were to calm and help her center herself. She opened her eyes not long after closing them for when she closed them the nightmare from the previous night appeared.

Svalin climbed to her feet and walked toward the bungalow she shared with her wife and son.

Vernique hadn't slept. She was staring out the window a lot. Soon she ran to the door. "Svalin!"

Svalin smiled. "Well met," she said as she mounted the few steps to the bungalow.

Svalin returned the hugs, though gently as to not hurt her wife. "How fares thee and Solver? How wast the charity ball?"

Brandr stands to the side in the entrance of the bungalow and just watches. He didn't need much sleep, but really both the ladies had been acting oddly the past few days especially, and Lady Vernique's worry today, along with Lady Svalin's absence was particularly noticeable. Something was going on he wasn't aware of, though he knew it wasn't his place to pry about it.

Svalin wasn't sure if she could talk about it right now. It was still way too fresh in her mind and memories. She nodded. "Yes, milady."

"Well met, Brandr Fandralsson," she said noticing him standing by the doorway.

"Well met Lady Svalin. I art glad to see thee back," he bows slightly. It'd also be nice to know why Lady Vernique seemed so relieved to see her...alive? Why wouldn't she be is the question.

He tilts his head and asks, as if this were a completely usual conversation. "What was milady?"

Svalin sat at the table with her hands wrapped around the mug of hot chocolate absorbing the warmth. She sighed. He had to know.

"E'ry solstice I must battle Nidhogg," Svalin said. She didn't have to explain to Brandr that she would die. He was well aware of what Nidhogg was and that legions would fall before him. "Mine blood wilt help restore Yggdrasil and I wilt be reborn in the morn." The dying was the easy part. It was what came after that was the hard part.

Her hands started shaking at the memories.

Brandr listens carefully but doesn't voice his opinion or ask why she must do this just yet. But there's something more, because he knows a warrior such as Svalin wouldn't be shaking at experiencing death, not her most certainly.

"What else ist there?" It's not 'is there anything else?', he knows there is something she isn't saying, and that's what's really bothering her it seems.

"It ist fine, Vernique," Svalin said to her wife. "After I die I must watch the death of the world and of hope. It ist what mayst be if we fail to protect Solver and he doth cause the destruction of Asgard and Migard."

"What?" Vernique says as she puts down her own cup of cocoa and stares.

"...How do I get an appointment to talk to that bitch?"

He'd been about to bow with a usual 'yes milady' to Vernique and take his leave, that tone was very much the 'this is an order' tone, when Svalin speaks. Brandr looks torn, it's his duty to follow their orders but when they didn't agree...

If that didn't have him freeze with his head half-bowed, the rest of what Svalin said certainly made sure he would. There's not a word from him, partly because he's following the not making this A Thing now, and partly because what did one say to that? It looked like Lady Vernique could fill in his silence though, even if he didn't know who the 'bitch' was.

Still, he stays quiet, Not Making This A Thing Right Now was a very express order and it seemed the lady had some words to say about it.

"It ist fine, Vernique," Svalin said. "It ist something that must be endured. It doth serve to strengthen mine resolve and determination to Solver and thee."

"It has been established that we have very different senses of 'fine,'" Vernique says flatly.

No comment from Brandr still. It wasn't his place to voice his opinion on what was 'fine' here or not. Especially not now. Besides, this had a tinge of marital dispute to it.

So he does what any Crimson Hawk is good at, standing to the side and not drawing attention to himself while on duty.
