The grand ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel on 57 East 57th street was festively decorated for the holidays. A series of lit candles on every table gave off warm light and the dulcet tones of a jazz ensemble filled the room.

People, the upper elite of New York society, Hollywood celebrities, musicians, politicians and even superheroes moved around the room. People sat at tables and talked, while some moved gracefully around the large dance floor.

Tables loaded with unwrapped and unopened toys lined one wall and at one end stood a very large decorated Christmas tree. Wrapped presents sat under the tree, but they were just empty boxes wrapped for decoration. Mistletoe hung from the ceiling near the tree and people stopped to kiss.

The air was light and the mood happy and festive.

Vincent takes her by the hand and leads her gracefully onto the floor. "And yourself? How is-- the Goddess of Secrets passing her days of late?"

He almost says 'my lady' out of old habit, but just doesn't feel it's appropriate, now, while they're... casual.

And possibly romancing an Elf. She... valued Vincent's friendship, dearly. He had been the first to show her kindness when they had been banished sent to Midgard. And she enjoyed his friendship still.

But people doth change...

He smiles and nods. "You would have to work very hard indeed to spoil a celebration like this. I'm fine, I promise.

So, I've got some free time now that the semester's done, before the next one starts. I was hoping to see you a little more frequently, if that's alright. Get away from winter in New York and take in the sun on your coast."

Kael caught tidbits of the conversation as he approached,feeling even more awkward that he had been already. Still..he couldn't just walk back to Sydney in defeat.

"Lady Asleif," Kael greets with a courtly bow, though inside his gut is wrenching. He'd learned long ago to keep up a proper facade. "Pardon me, sir, but may I borrow the Goddess of Secrets for a dance?"

Vincent turns at the interruption. He's caught the face in passing in some super-clash of some kind or another, so he's not alarmed by a Dark Elf's presence.

"Of course, sir, but I don't believe I've had the pleasure." He still holds Asleif's hand, but removes the other from her waist to extend it to Kael. "Vincent Vernard."

Well. This had suddenly become quite... awkward. And not a situation Asleif would have dreamed to find herself in.

"Vincent, Kael is a teammate of mine and," she stumbled over the words, "an intimate friend."

Not... quite the best words. It would seem her wits had deserted her.

"Oh." Vincent gives himself a brief moment. He'd known he and Asleif were only casual at the time, but... well, it wasn't as if either one of them had asked for full disclosure.

He pushes off the unease, and smiles. "Then he is very fortunate, and as deserving as anyone of your choosing to dance with you." He moves his hand holding Asleif's towards Kael's own hand.

She was... really bad at that, when it came to her personal life, she reflected. Perhaps because she had never had much of one before. This was certainly not how she had wanted this conversation to go.

Asleif took Kael's hand. "I... thank you, Vincent."

"Thank you," Kael manages to say gracefully. When they get to the dance floor, Kael whispers, mortified. "I deeply apologize for that. I have to be careful how I follow Lady Sydney's advice in the future."

Asleif shook her head. "Do not be. The conversation... wouldst have happened in some way, regardless. And in affairs of the heart, mine words are less swift than they wouldst be elsewhere. Tis not quite how I wouldst have preferred... but t'woudl have occurred all the same."
