Bow to the Crown
Svalin wasn't quite sure how it happened, but she found herself along with Aridis on a road trip with Frances. Vernique had gone shopping with Brandr and Solver, saying that Solver needed more clothes. Though Svalin was quite sure their son had enough clothes and shoes and everything else a child could need. Svalin was of the mind that he could have used a few more wooden weapons, but her wife was quite keen on limiting the number of those.

Aridis and she had been in the training room when Frances found them. The next moment they were in the car and heading somewhere.

"Where art we?" Svalin asked as they climbed out of the car.

"It looks as if we art dressed for the occasion," her twin commented as she climbed out of the back. She stretches to loosen her limbs as she hates being tangled up in a car. Cars are not a fun way to travel for someone who is very tall.

"It wilt be interesting to see mortals dressed like this." She sends a smile towards Frances to thank her for being here.

"At the Shire," Frances answered as she killed the engine. She wasn't sure why she tagged Svalin and Aridis, but taking two Asgardian goddess types to see a Renaissance Faire would be funny. Like taking a Kree to see a Trekkie Convention. It sounded good at the time? "They've got an archery competition that's been growing a pretty sizable rep in the past years. Recurve only, no plastic or metal shafts, no sights, trying to keep it accurate and everything. But it's open for participants, whoever wants to try." And she might be unable to pass up a competition like this. Whatever.

She popped the trunk and lifted the fake bottom to get to her trusted gear. "It's harmless fun, and a welcome break from endless drills and tedious debriefings."

"Art there any other competitions?" Svalin asked. Why she was good with a bow, she wasn't anywhere near her sister's skill or Frances' skill.

"It ist good that I hath mine other bow then," Aridis commented. It would be unfair to use her magical weapon in a competition like this.

When Aridis sees that bow she grins. "You have a good eye for bows. If you ever have the chance to travel to Asgard there ist a craftsman I wouldst like to introduce you to. The finest Recurve bows you wouldst have ever laid eyes on. He doesn't just use wood. You wilt see many different kinds of materials, my friend. I think you would drool just a bit. They art excellent bows for those who do not use magic."

"There's melees to watch, and if we're lucky, even a joust or two. I'm sure plenty of places have, like, arm wrestling or drinking competitions."

She beamed from the praise of her bow, dipping her head in thanks. "I'd love to, the caliber of the stuff I've seen on Midgard from your place is insane." Laughing, she wrinkled her nose in consideration. After all, they wrote stories about the weapons from Asgard. "Let's be honest, I'd probably drool a lot.

"It wouldst be a shock to see anyone that could keep up with Hal," Aridis agrees with a slight grin.

Now she grins even wider. "I admit I drooled the first time I saw one. The feel of one the first time it is in thine hands is like none other."

"Well the beer sellers would be heart broken when they're drunk dry before lunch."

"No way." Frances stopped and grinned, fighting the urge to laugh. "It's hard to imagine Asgardians drooling over things, even over gorgeous bows. But getting to play with one of them?" She whistled appreciatively.

"We doth appreciate finely crafted weapons," Svalin said and touched the grip of her own sword hanging at her waist. They had finally made their way inside the gates and Svalin paused to look at the people.

Some were dressed in normal Migard clothes while others were dressed in clothing that would have fit in in Asgard. There was a loud commotion and a procession could be seen coming toward them.

Svalin watched with curiosity.

"We might not quite drool but close enough," Aridis agrees. "Weapons can be both practical and like art... Just not the kind that wouldst be put on display in your art museums... Mayhap the normal ones."

Aridis sees the procession too. This gets her very curious. What exactly will be happening at this fair?

Frances grins and gets them their 'Yes, we are old enough to drink' paper bracelets before steering them to the parade. It's a great way to see everything and everyone that will be around, without having to walk around the whole place. There were jugglers and minstrels, people walking with flagons or swords balanced on their heads, more bar wenches than you could shake a stick at, knights and court folk.... "Oh hey, they have the horses, there'll be a joust!"

At the rear of the procession came the king and queen of the faire. "Art they the king and queen?" she asked Frances. She didn't wait for an answer. She bowed.

"Should we find a place to watch it from?"

Aridis also finds herself bowing. Showing her respects to royalty is second nature. It looks as if the others are doing the same so they must be a real monarchy and not like something from a play or movie.

Frances looks around and decided to hell with it, bowing with the two goddess to the king and queen. It's the point of the faire, right? "The joust? Hell yeah, we'll see about getting some good seats."

"Mayhap I canst petition the king and queen to allow me to participate in the melee and the joust," Svalin mused. "They art the rulers of this realm and canst allow such request."

"I wast unawares of such rulers in this country," Svalin said. "It ist most strange and welcomed." Svalin would admit that the government of the United States confused her a bit. Lady Sydney had done her best to explain it, but the concept of choosing leaders for only a short period seemed so alien to her.

"Aye. Perhaps the United States is filed with smaller kingdoms," Aridis supposes out loud. "And they elect one of the kings to act as... High King? For a few years."

That is so wrong but Aridis didn't really understand democracies or elections. She didn't care to as it wasn't important to what she did like doing as well as her duties.

"Well, uh, no, technically those kinds of titles are revoked in the US, we don't have the feudal system," Frances starts, slowly dawning to the problem. "They may not let you into some fights, you know Midgardian knights versus Asgardian goddesses?" The fights are probably choreographed, one of the knights going up against either of them might end up putty and then there was the insurance claims.

"Art they visiting dignitaries?" she asked. "A true knight wouldst face a challenge no matter how great it ist."

"Aye. Svalin would not injure them. Only bruise a little," Aridis commented. The point is to beat them not to nearly kill them. "If they yielded in a match if they are clearly in a losing position then it ist no dishonor on their part."

Aridis doubts that Svalin would lose any tournament on Earth personally. She also thinks that archery would be a fair competition for herself. The bow she would be using has no magic to enhance it. She would be using no spells to make her shots strike true either.

"Well, they're king and queen of here, but I don't think the President recognizes them as a sovereign ruler. They probably rotate the position around, just os everyone gets to have a crack at it." As fun as it sounds to be queen, wearing royal regalia in this weather probably sucked.

Shrugging to Aridis, Frances had to agree that Svalin probably wouldn't beat anyone to a pulp. Wouldn't, not couldn't. "Maybe they have some participatory fights, the jousts are probably off limits. It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye, after all."

"We can split up?" Frances offered and looked between the two. "The archery will need a few permission forms signed, and that will give you time to... request an audience? We can meet up to see how things will go."

Okay, so was a plan and hopefully they'd get their questions answered. "Yes, beer! We play, kick ass, take names and then reconvene for lots of beer. Okay so," Frances looked around and pointed in two directions. "We go that way and Lady Svalin goes that way, and best of luck follow all, cool? Cool."

"I wouldst wish mine sister luck but she doth not need it," Aridis said simply.

"She ist very skilled. If she is beaten then I wouldst be shocked.... Either way this ist for fun." She follows after Frances.

"Would thou be willing to check mine paper work? Speaking English is... a skill I art acquiring but writing is much more difficult." There is no shame in asking for help.

"Your two training must have been intense- and plush," Frances mused, waving her hands between the two blondes. "Like apprenticing with what, gods and names from legends?"

"No problem, mostly this is just you saying you won't sue if you poke your eye out. Not much fancy-legal stuff."

Svalin had been hanging out in the melee area. She had managed to talk a few of the participants into sparring with her before the melee began. She of course bested them and was eventually asked to join the melee.
