Vlad had paused in his assault to wait until the dust cleared a little to see the results of his last attack. But as he does so the iron net shoots out of it and straight at his head. It gets very close to latching on, in fact it pretty much does, but it's only a last minute reflex that Vlad manages to get a hold of part of it to work on yanking that thing off his face. If Dmitri was buying time, it was certainly working.
