Meme: Horror Noir
It was a dark and stormy night, a solid downpour expected the smell of the air, and the grimiest corners of the city were doing their best to live up to expectations. There'd been a string of murders that the police were baffled but tight lipped over, and one victim's family had been driven to hiring a PI to get any answers.

Valini Morse, aka the Shrink, stepped out of the taxi to walk over to both the scene and her partner, scanning the corded off area. "Huh. Reminds me of my last break-up. Clingy bastard." With a sigh, she stuck her hands in her coat's pockets and looked over Lena's shoulder. "Whatcha got so far?"

Must contain: Silly agency name, forensics, fighting evil, fashionable trenchcoats and flowy scarves, molotov cocktails, motorcycle chase and seedy bar

"New lab equipment or swiping it from another lab? Now you're just talking dirty to me. Not on the job Val!" She shot an amused smile at the other woman for the battery check. "Good, let's not be some horror movie cliche."

"If I see the knife then that means I'm not likely to be a victim of it, though he has a thing for back of the head hits first. You take point I'll cover our backs?" She lowered her voice as they went.

"You're right, someone might be listening in," she popped back and smirked. Though really, if they could bring down this butcher? Val would drag the rotting corpse through every bean counter's office until there were some upgrades, asap. She nodded in exasperation and handed back the flashlight.

"Back of head first, and little bruising to the rest of the body, not much struggle expected when he takes them down. You keep checking behind you as well," she agreed and took a breath. Willing oneself to be bait was never an easy trick, but he wouldn't bite if they looked too obviously here on a mission. "Too late to call back up, huh?"

What an amusing image that made. Not that the people who's offices were being visited would find it amusing...but hell, she'd enjoy the spectacle even if they got nothing out of it.

A few experimental flicks of the flashlight, just to test how easy it was to flash on in a rush, and she continued on. "Let's be honest...we're not exactly high on the backup priority list. Which was what led to the heel in the eye incident that one time," she commented, keeping her eyes peeled and checking behind her periodically. Which frankly she didn't consider suspicious because women at night had high enough risk rates that the odd glance over the shoulder should be expected.

Of course Lena was right, maybe Val should be nicer to the cops to get on their good side. Then ,remembering the attitudes more of them gave, decided that was a dumb idea. "If this was a cartoon, I'd just start talking out loud to lure him out," she muttered after a few moments in the dark.

She was about to suggest taking another alley when something in the dark lunged out from the alley right behind them. Val swung her flashlight hard at the shape, hoping she'd hit it in the face or shoulder in exchange for losing their sight on him.

Not like being nice would do anything and not being nice? What, they'd lose the crap centrifuge?

"Thank god we're not a cartoon, too many falling objects and there's the physical comedy to consider," she muttered back, really not liking dark alleys. This was why nobody tended to venture in them willingly yet here they were...

Lena instantly flicked hers on, shining it in the direction they'd just seen something move in. Perhaps a second surprise light attack could do something. "That way!"

Who charges after things that go bump and slash in the night? Val thought as they gave chase. Crazy ladies, that's who.The shape wasn't too defined but it was big enough to keep an eye on. "Trash can," she warned and jumped over it. Picking up a chunk of broken sidewalk, she threw it at the shape to wound. It hit and the thing shuddered but kept going. Apparently it didn't like being the prey.

And apprently they were long-time members of the crazy lady club. At least they didn't have an army of cats living with them too.

Lena took the warning in stride, somewhat literally as she jumped over and tried keeping the flashlight on the figure. "I hate this 'see the knife then shoot stuff," she muttered as Val caught up after that pause to throw bits of sidewalk. She yanked what seemed to be a broom handle from a passing garbage and threw it at the thing. It hit but bounced off ineffectually, of course. But the point was more of a 'we're closing in on you and close enough to throw and hit' thing.

"Yeah well, we can't go on a shooting spree. We're the good guys," she tossed back as they ran. "'Kill it with fire' is still a valid plan if we get to that point." Yes they were throwing garbage as a serial killer with possible powers, and they accepted that this was their lives. "Police! Freeze," she tried, ignoring the small detail about badges. "If you resist we will be forced to retaliate." And that meant more than a shower of rubbish, buster. There was some streetlights ahead of them, narrowing the killer's escape path.

"Darn morals and regulations," she sighed, though she understood the reason behind them. Besides, shoot first, ask questions later wasn't how they did things. Asking questions could be done while shooting, but really if you wanted answers best to hold fire. "Let's hope we don't get to that point."

Lena nods to Val, indicating the streetlights up ahead. "Corner him there?"

She snorted. "And simple math; there's more things and people that shouldn't be hit than are." Granted kneecaps and ankles, while tricky to aim for, were great for the shoot-and-talk scenarios. She looked over her shoulder to Lena and nodded, breaking off for a full tilt sprint to one side, cutting him off from one avenue of escape and giving Lena a cleaner shot.

Lena sprinted off to the other avenue of escape up ahead, women with guns cutting him off from booking it away, and really no other particularly good places to run to, it worked out.

She first flicked her flashlight on its most powerful setting to aim at the figure, while still aiming the gun. "Stop now or you don't get a choice of who shoots you."

Val slammed to a stop opposite Lena and held her gun up. "Under the suspicion of murder, you are under arrest. Any attempt by you to resist will be met." She stuffed her hand in her pocket and pulled out the old flash-style bottle Lena kept around 'just in case'.

The black and rather intimidating man lurched at her and she chucked the cocktail at his chest, igniting as the glass broke. She may not shoot for shit, but throwing she was pretty solid.

Luckily one of them could shoot for shit. Val could kick your ass if you decided to get in close, Lena could shoot kneecaps off if you decided to stay away. Hey, it worked.

But at this angle, there was a chance Val could be hit too, so while their suspect was flailing at the cocktail exploding at him, Lena moved over so the angle she was at did not involve her partner in the line of fire. Only then was he getting those shots at his knees. "I'm sure that hurts a lot more than AA powered flashlights." The cocktail of course, she was proud of her 'just in case' precautions.

The scary dark man was on fire and couldn't escape the light and now hobbled and couldn't get away even if he wanted. When he landed on the ground, she grabbed a tarp and threw it over him to smother the flames. He didn't move much and she nodded to Lena to shoot should she feel like it. Cautiously coming over, she handcuffed the first arm she found and reached to get to the other.

While the handcuffing was happening, Lena stood by, gun ready to shoot once more. Though really, if the guy thought to get at Val now, he'd probably have one less functional arm in a moment.

"Tow him back or call it in? Either way, drinks after because my god long night."

Apparently the killer was too stunned to move too much, or the fire did something to him because Val had little resistance while placing the handcuffs. Standing up with a satisfied sigh, she brushed her hair off her face. "Call it in. There are manly and brawny police that insist we are too delicate for this work and I am willing to agree with them while they drag this one back through the alleys. I will even feign a limp if need calls." She picked up her flash light and aimed the beam at the lump on the ground while she dialed with the other hand.

"The only downside of practical shoes is we can't use heels as the feigning limp excuse. Hardly a loss though." Lena kept the gun on their captive while Val made the call. "While we're waiting, I say after this is done we head back to the lab, break out the stash of drinkable alcohol until we need to crash on the old couch, that really needs new cushions, in the break room. Sound like a plan?"

"Let's see if we can write it off as matronly and guilt them into helping," Val agreed. She went through the normal rounds of transfers and on holds, she grinned at Lena's suggestion. "I see your drinkable alcohol and raise you the good take out, delivered to our creepy lab door to eat with said alcohol."

"Deal. And perhaps while we're off our faces, we might think of a better agency name. And as intense as it sounds, I'm vetoing Solvers of Uncommon Crimes with Kickass Science. Because the acronym will put us out of business."

"Oh right, because that will be the best time to name ourselves, when we are incoherent and breaking all the laws of language." She laughed and shook her head. "Or get us the wrong kind of reputation."

"No no, we start the process while sober, and continue throughout the drinking period. At some point we hit that peak of creativity drunk where we get actually good ideas before we descend into incoherence. Then the next morning we can laugh and cringe at it before burning the evidence," Lena grinned. "What's a drunken night without something even slightly laughable and cringe-inducing?"

They did need to cut loose, didn't they? After all, they did just bag the scariest serial killer in months. She shook her head and steered them towards the car. "As long as any of our pickled genius doesn't go any where beyond our scummy lab's walls," she conceded.

"Thank God, I thought we'd have to drag him to booking ourselves and my arm's getting tired. I really want a drink now."

"Gentlemen!" she announced in her best delicate voice and waved to catch their attention. "He's still out, so you don't have to be worried!" She wanted to rub it in, just a little, because she was merely human.

Lena had to try to hold back laughter. Well...not like she tried very hard. "Careful, he's heavy. So we'll leave it to you," she said, before whispering to Val with great amusement. "...and leave the paperwork to you too."
