He's normally not the dodging type, there's usually no point in it, but this time he's making a point to. Not because he couldn't take the blast, but because it would knock him back or send him flying and make him lose the advantage of having all her attention on him right now. So Vlad does his best, ducking and dodging and making narrow escapes while moving towards the flying Rachel and tossing things at her. The powerful blast comes dangerously close, searing off the top layer of his left arm as it goes by. But at least he has her full attention.
"How a mind-controlled X-Man fights! Come on Rach!" He's pretty darn sure his actual words aren't getting through but the yelling back is just an easier way of adding on the focus on him.
He figured someone might have a plan, and if not, at least one or two of them might recover in time to start a renewed attack now that she was distracted. He has a feeling this fight will be largely about controlling where Rachel is focused.
