Old Friends
It was the one talk Natasha hadn't been looking forward to, but she had to do it. Boundaries needed to be set so they wouldn't be stepping on each other's toes, not that there would be much of it with Matt being in San Francisco, but they were both responsible for a young girl.

Natasha picked a small cafe in the Village. The place didn't hold any history for either of them, which was good. This was going to be hard enough without physical reminders of the past.

Natasha grabbed a cup of tea and a table while she waited.

Matt appreciated the fairly unfamiliar smell of the place as made his way into the cafe carefully. There was enough lingering in the air as it was...

Natasha stood when he approached the table. "Matthew."

"Natasha." The sound of her voice was supposed to be easier to deal with the third time this week, Matt. Seriously. "How are the kids?" Part of him idly wonders how this conversation would sound out of context. Or in another world.

"They're all good," she answered. "Please sit." She sat down and took a sip of her coffee. Of all the things in life, sitting here with Matt Murdock and talking about kids was the one thing she would have bet money on that would have never happened.

She knew he was leaving this evening after spending a few days in New York. He still had to go home and tell Elektra, which made Natasha glad they lived on the other side of the country.

"I can't even begin to tell you how strange this feels."

"And yet I have some inkling," Matt said with a thin smile as he took a seat.

"I'm glad to hear it. And this is going to seem a strange way to start a co-parenting discussion but...do you have any florescent lighting at your place?"

[info]redheadspy

She thought about that for a moment. "I think the only florescent lighting is in the labs, but I haven't been in them in ages. That's the mad geniuses turf and I stay far away."

"I would assume this would deal with Eliza's hypersensitive sight. I'll make a mental note to double check all the residences."

Matt nodded. "Florescent is worse for that, they say. Great. Wanted to get that out of the way, just in case."

Natasha nodded. "I'll remember that. Anything else I should know?"

"Eliza probably knows that eating heavy on the greens and things like eggs can make light-sensitive headaches more manageable, but I don't know how serious she takes it, so maybe a word to Jarvis?"

"That I'm thinking in terms of her staying here isn't because she isn't welcome in San Francisco if that's what's best for her. I just got the impression New York was more likely. She'll have broader support here, and she seems like she'd miss the New York Circus.

[info]redheadspy
2009-05-28 12:24 pm UTC (link)
Natasha nodded. "I will tell Jarvis and keep it in mind when we order out."

She nodded again. "She seems to want in on the life," Natasha said with a little regret. She held a small hope that one of her children, extra-dimensional or natural, would not want in on the life. "Did you tell her as much? Did you tell her that she is welcome in San Francisco? She is welcome, right? Will your wife have a problem with the kid living there or visiting if she wants?"

"I did tell her, yes, and I'll reiterate it to her if necessary. Elektra and I have some more long conversations ahead of us, but she's not going to have a problem particularly with Eliza being there." Matt'd do whatever it took to make that situation work out.
"But yes, Eliza did seem to want in." And that was more Tasha's turf now.

"Good. I know this is a lot to deal with and I know some people have harder time adjusting than others. And to ease your mind, Tony is fine with Eliza being with us. He's been really good at dealing with the surprises we've been dropping on him." And there had been quite a few in the past year alone. She looked over at him and really looked at him. "How are you holding up?"

"I'm glad to hear it." Matt had finally acquired a glass of water with lemon and sipped. "And ...I can't complain. Had a few days now. And Eliza seems like a great kid."

"It's kind of funny, but this does get easier each time it happens." That was one thing Natasha would have sworn that she would never had heard herself saying. Ever.

Natasha looked down into her cup of tea. "I know this is going to sound really strange and make things a lot more awkward, but it's nice to know that some universe you and me are still together."

"I'll take your word there.

Matt then takes a very long drink of water. "I understand the sentiment." And that's all he'll say aloud. There are things he has to be able to honestly tell Elektra he never said.

Natasha loved her husband and her children beyond words, but a part of her had always wondered "what if" when it came to her and Matt.

"Despite the circumstances, it is good to see you. I was a bit surprised when Jack first came to the mansion." She looked up at him. "He's a good kid, Matt. You should be very proud."

"She's quite well, keeping very busy." Admittedly wasn't her best when last he was with her, but that kind of went without saying. "Tony and the mad genius racket all right?"

Natasha smiled. "They're good. Tony and I are doing rather well with this whole being married thing. Anya's starting MIT this fall and working at the company until then."

She smiled at him.

"Thank you. It means a lot, Matthew."

"Lucky for the company she didn't just want to be an architect." Matt was not trying to be sardonic.

And he nodded a little.

"I know. She's so wrapped up in it that Tony and I have to tell her to go do normal teenager things."

She drained the rest of the tea out of the cup.

"Is there anything else we need to go over regarding Eliza?"

Matt smiled. "The harsh discipline you have to enforce. At least there's always shopping, apparently."

"I think we've covered the most significant things, until she's got a chance to think over the options more. Would Anya's school be a good fit for her, you think?"

"It shouldn't come as a surprise that she's a workaholic and a shopaholic. Though I have no idea where she gets those from."

"It could be," Natasha said. "Anya seemed to like it enough and it is one of the best private schools in New York. I'll take her for a visit and let her check it out."

Natasha smiled. "That's still my favorite movie."

She smiled. "Good. I should probably get going. I now have three teenagers in the house to ride herd on." And yes, that was more daunting task than any spy mission.

"I can only imagine." Matt extended hand, the extra breath almost completely undiscernable. "Good luck with everything, Natasha. Talk to you again sometime."

Natasha took the hand and just held it, not shaking like she was supposed to do. The breath caught in her chest. "Thank you, Matthew. Take care of yourself." She smiled. Still holding his hand. "I suppose that's unavoidable now."

After a long pause that seems much longer, Matt finally managed a fairly inferior handshake.

"Yeah, the thing with parenting; if you don't communicate, you're Doing It Wrong. Good bye."

"Exactly," she said and finally managed to actually shake his hand. She released it. "See you later, Matthew. Have a safe trip home."

She gave him a smile and then left the cafe.
