At The Starting Line Of The Rest Of Her Life
Anya loved the relationship she had with her father. There was nothing she couldn't talk to him about and Dad would always listen to what she had to say. In a way he was like a best friend rather than a parent. He was always there when it really mattered, he talked to her instead of at or down at her, and at times he was like a partner in crime. Anya never understood exactly what her classmates were talking about when they described problems with their parents. Sure she had issues with her parents at times, mostly with her mother, but she knew she could always talk to her parents about issues.

Despite knowing she could always talk to Dad, she was nervous about this subject for some reason. It was probably because it was one of those big turning points in her life. She wasn't sure if she was ready for it or not.

Anya looked at the forms in her hand and sighed. It was time to bite the bullet and go find Dad. There was no putting this off any longer.

"Your love life gets a lot more interesting to manage...No, check that. All love lives are interesting to manage."

"What love life? I'd have to have one first to have it be interesting. It's been awhile since I've even been out on a date." And the way that turned out was probably why she hadn't had any interest in dating. Being abducted and brainwashed was not her idea of a good date.

"If you go to MIT, you'll get one - quickly. Frankly, the Martians need more women."

"Well duh. No offense, but most of the guys that go there probably haven't been out on a date, let alone know how to talk to a girl. Or know what do to with one if one showed up naked in front of him."

"Besides, I'd like someone who would make it a challenge to kick his ass."

"So we've gone over the options, which one or ones am I allowed to do?"

"Other then start in on their Advanced physiology homework? No. But remember I went to MIT." The kid knows he dad was about as far from Catholic priest as you could get.

"I wouldn't recommend Greek row for anything resembling privacy or study habits. On campus means less commute time and more study access. Off-campus increases your chance of hero time and...you know...having something remotely resembling a life. That's pretty much the bottom line."

"There are exceptions of course," she said. "Off campus, but where? I can't live in Boston on my own and you, Mom and James would have to move there too. I am only 16 and I'd starve on my own. I think the best thing for me, as far as I can see right now, is to stay here and commute via suit. If my grades slip because of the distractions and the heroing, then I have to move there and live on campus."

"I don't think you'd starve, but I won't argue with you staying here." And being something of a normal teenager. He was just thrown into MIT at 15 and that didn't help him in a lot of ways. "I'd be glad for it - but I do agree about the grades."

He clicks on some saved Craig's List ads. "And - oh look - discreet off campus garages for rent."

"I'd live on takeout, but that gets old very quickly. It's a deal on the grades. Anything below a B and I have to stay there."

She smiled. "I'll take a trip up this weekend to find a suitable one."

"I ever tell you how awesome it is to have you as a dad? I can actually talk to you about things that most parents wouldn't even think about discussing with their kids and I don't get lectures. Often."

"We don't now?"

"Only when you earn one. I like to think you've had the advantage of all my mistakes."

"You cook once and awhile. Mom does too, which admittedly, she's getting better. Not to mention there is Jarvis' cooking once and awhile."

"I do, but there are some I have to learn on my own."

"Now that the housing issue is taken care of, what do we do about the summer? I would like to work full time when I'm not out kicking butt."

"I only took up cooking when I was trying that dinner at the table thing." Which didn't work out too badly, all things considered. He wishes he could make most of the things Anya's grandmother could manage blindfolded.

"Pepper can and will put you to work. think of it as a way to outfit your garage."
